SMJHL S80 Rookie Class - Top 5 Draft Picks Progress - JBeckQuest - 11-18-2024

In this Deep Dive we will take a look at the top 5 SMJHL draft picks from the S80 class and how they fared against competition during this last regular season.

Rodwin Dionicio - Quebec City Citadelles

Rodwin appears to be going for a well balanced offensive defenseman. He ended the regular season with 294 total TPE and a bank balance of $14,050,000, which are respectable numbers. His stats are certainly respectable, although one cannot be sure how he would have fared on a worse team. He ended the regular season with 14 goals, 34 assists (for 48 points). Rodwin had an impressive +40 plus/minus rating. As the Quebec City Citadelles were an absolute powerhouse this season, Rodwin wound up 10th on the team in points. I think that they might have been expected to get a couple more goals out of Rodwin this year, especially with that offensive defenseman build. Overall, not a bad season on a great team, however as we will see, there were more experienced players who could have brought more production to the table at this highly coveted #1 spot.

Rocky Gislason - Colorado Raptors

Rocky, of course, comes courtesy of long time user Jumbo. Drafted in the second spot by the Colorado Raptors, he got to spend the season on an upper mid pack team. Coming in just above Rodwin, Rocky sits at 300 total TPE with a larger bank balance of $48,553,000. As a center, Rocky went for a highly skilled offensive player with more modest defensive and physical ratings. How did this build fare in respect to his fellow teammates? Well, he finished the regular season with 17 goals and 32 assists for 49 total points, squeaking out one more point than Rodwin managed. This landed Rocky 8th on his team in points. His plus/minus rating left something to be desired, as he was the only one on his team with an overall minus rating, sitting at -2. This may be because of his more modest defensive and physical stats as previously mentioned. While Rocky shows offensive prowess, it seems like he may be a defensive liability. Overall, Rocky had a mediocre season yet has a bright future.

Kim Chaewon - Carolina Kraken

Kim was the player that everyone expected to go #1. She dominated the league points standings for the first half of the season, although she cooled off throughout the second half. While Colorado also got a strong return user, there is no doubt that Quebec City missed out on a true superstar in Kim. Kim currently sits at 301 total TPE with a bank account just under 100 million. She wound up finishing the season with 30 goals and 41 assists for a total of 71 points, which tied her for 4th on the team in points. Similarly to Rocky, Kim's plus/minus rating was far below average on her team, as she registered a +1 rating for the season. Overall, Kim is a player who could break SMJHL records as she continues to develop.

Jean Bon - St. Louis Scarecrows

Jean is a right defense hailing from Montreal, Canada. Jean is a well balanced defensive defenseman with lower offensive ratings. What shocks me about Jean is the low TPE, with a total TPE of 264. It is possible that as the season has progressed, Jean lost some steam and let a few TPE opportunities slip, although they are still highly active on the forum and, as logic follows, in their locker room. Our defensive defenseman in question earned himself 6 goals and 29 assists for a total of 35 points, good for 12th on the team. Unlike our previous two players, Jean has an impressive plus/minus rating at +15, which is good enough for 3rd on the team. Overall, some solid defensive capability, but will they be able to squeeze out some more TPE as Jean's career continues?

Leo Carlsson - Ottawa Highlanders

Our fifth and final draftee landed on the Highlanders. There is no doubt that this player has been very active in the locker room this season and that Ottawa is very happy to have them. This player is a center and has a fairly balanced build, with a slight edge in intelligence. Leo sits at 286 total TPE, which is a respectable amount, and has a large bank account being a new user with $30,780,000. Leo finished off the season with 20 goals and 21 assists for 41 points, good for 9th on the team. Leo continues our trend of struggling plus/minus rating, finishing the season with a -7. This player and user looks like he is going to go places. Good places.
