S79 SMJHL Postseason Bonanza - puolivalmiste - 11-25-2024 The S79 SMJHL Playoffs are over and now it is time for Postseason Bonanza! Wait! What's this? Here's how PB will work: there are several tasks, each of which is worth varying amounts of TPE for putting in a little effort, for a maximum of 16 possible TPE total. You can mix and match, complete them in any order and do as few or as many as you would like (up to 16 TPE). Recreates, you will find this slightly different than CW. Here's how TPE will be earned: For every 50 words you write about a prompt, you will earn 1 TPE. That scales on, so 100 words for 2 TPE, 150 words for 3 TPE, etc. If you wanted to 800 words about one prompt, that would be 16 TPE right then and there. The graphics TPE scale has remained the same. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please, after every prompt you write about add a Word Count (ie. 150 words). This will greatly help the PT Team! ONLY S79 SMJHL ROOKIES (S80 Players) CAN EARN TPE for Postseason Bonanza TASKS. If you signed after the trade deadline and are going into the S80 SMJHL Draft, this task is not for you. You may claim affiliation from an (one, 1) ISFL, PBE or SSL PT this season for a max of 3 TPE. Deadline: Sunday, December 8th at 11:59PM PST Without further ado, here are our prompts! Fan Appreciation Day The Newfoundland Berserkers love their fans and had the 2nd best home record in the league, which we contribute mostly to our crowd's ability to keep us motivated and give us momentum to maintain our edge over the opposing team. Knowing we came up short last season, we’d want to show our fans how much we care with a giveaway on opening night next season. We know the way to our fan’s hearts is through their stomach. And what better way to fuel our fan’s passion for the game than through a free meal? That’s why we’re giving each fan a free hotdog and soft beverage of their choice. 109 words. Code: 2. Looking Towards the Future The Newfoundland Berserkers are a well-rounded team, but since we didn’t put enough holes in the Anchorage Boats to sink their battleships, it’s apparent we still need to add some pieces to get us to our goal of winning the cup. In the same sense, we will probably be losing some of our top offensive pieces due to call-ups, including Jett Labyrinth, Center, who’s signed by the Winnipeg Aurora. Additionally, we have our 2 top Left Defensemen Weston Windsor and Leo Finnegan, one of which will likely be called up by the Edmonton Blizzard and Leo will likely be drafted in the upcoming SHL draft. So we will likely need a Left Defenseman in the draft to avoid any potential gaps caused by call-ups. However, more importantly, the Berserkers only have one Left Wing at the current moment. Therefore I think it would be best for us to strategize by taking a Left Wing in our first pick of the draft. 161 Words. Code: 7. Winner Winner Chicken All I wanted my rookie season was the hoist the Four Star Cup. I didn’t care about my own stats, I just wanted to do what I could to make our team the very best we could be. However, it wasn’t enough to take down the titan of the regular season, the Quebec City Citadels. They won the cup and rightfully so, they were undeniably the best team of the league. 71 Words. Code: 14. R&R After the Newfoundland Berserkers were eliminated in the second round of the Four Star Cup, I immediately packed up my golf bag and headed south to Myrtle Beach with fellow SMJHL rookies and personal friends, Dirk Dienhart and Boogan McGillicuddy. I know it’s a little cliché, but after a rigorous season, I was eager to take my frustrations out on a small white ball while taking in some of the gorgeous views dirty Myrtle has to offer. Once the trip concludes, I plan on spending the rest of my offseason returning to my hometown, Alberta to do some training and spend time with my family. 105 Words. Code: 5. Superlatives There are quite a few characters on the Newfoundland Berserkers that keep the lockerroom light and remind us; at the end of the day we are hockey players, not brain surgeons or firefighters – we’re not saving lives. That being said, it is a diverse group of individuals that make our locker room a home away from home. With that said, here are some superlatives for my teammates: Best Helper: There’s one teammate that always stands out when it comes to the end of practice and is always willing to put in the extra time, helping bag pucks, lead stretches and put the cages away, sometimes even doing the laundry and that award goes to Jacob Marsh Best Smile: This one is pretty self-explanatory, but the person with the cutest smile goes to Hamper Linthome, seeing as, well, he has the most teeth on the team. Most Team Spirit: Smells like Teen Spirit? No, that’s a deodorant. This person is always rocking the Berserker crest on their chest, and even has a small logo tatted on their buttocks. This is no contest as this award goes to Pohler Beargeron. Best Bromance: These two peas in a pod should be no surprise as they shower together in the locker room – Damante Gogi and Colton Paraygeko. Sickest Lettuce: What is hockey without flow? I’m not sure, but I do know that Emeric Ganger has one beautiful head of hair and that’s why he’s taking home the award for Sickest Lettuce. Finest Dance Moves: When you see this man on the ice, it’s no surprise that he’s got a dance repertoire bigger than the rings of Saturn. You can tell by the way he skates, he’s a woman’s man and he puts Kool & The Gang’s dance moves to shame. Can’t stop, won’t stop grooving – the finest dance moves award goes to TheGreatOne. Biggest Class Clown: This award goes to the man who never stops cracking jokes in the locker room and has made me personally piss myself several times – Jett Labyrinth. Best Eyes: James Connolly. 342 Words. RE: S79 SMJHL Postseason Bonanza - LALLAREN_1 - 11-25-2024 2. Looking Towards the Future: (462 words) Coming off a cup win most teams tend to shed a lot of talent, not the case for Quebec. Only a single player, Nor Ge is graduating to the SHL. Ge was a solid point-per-game wing who contributed primarily in 5-on-5 play and the second units of special teams. An offensive first wing who relied on physical traits and offense, the production needs to be replaced. Quebec has several wings that could step in to replace the spot. Duke Howard or Randolph Thompson-Smythe could step in and fill the void if the team wants to take players who are entering 425 TPE thresholds. If they want to convert a center then Dejana Kaptina looks like a good fit to move. If they want to look to the rookies then the speedster Shiny Rainbow could make sense in the role. The defensive core is led by Peter who was the only 425 TPE back last season. They will remain with the team for their finals season now but they are not alone anymore. Aslak Hestnes will join as a 425 TPE blueliner and the 6’9 Tower called Anatolyi Tarasov could also get to the 425 cap now in their final SMJHL season. Rodwin Dionicio, Lewis Holl, and Uwe Bindewald, all rookies entering their second year look set to take the immediate step to the 350 cap and give Quebec very good depth on the blueline. Even their style will fit well, Holl and Bindewald are both much more defensive anchors who can hold down any attack while Dionicio fills the two-way offensive playdriver that compliments well with either. In the crease we have (in my opinion the playoff MVP QCCBOT4) and Ela Solberg. Both netminders are now entering their 3rd season meaning that Quebec should see an overall improvement in every aspect from their goalie department this season. It’s possible Quebec can run a tandem of two 425 TPE goalies who can play as 1A/1B. At forwards the only loss we have gone over. The rest of the core is still here remaining at 425 or growing. At a glance and with an in-depth look you can find that the Quebec roster is actually going to become stronger next season. No matter what areas you look at it’s improvements across the boards, from net, to blueline, to forwards. With the luxury of a virtually complete roster, it gives the GMs the ability to draft the best available and completely ignore positions or builds. Looking at the long term it is likely we will see many forwards drafted as after next season several forwards are graduating leaving holes that need to be filled. With another great draft class, Quebec can continue to keep at the pace and challenge for another few seasons minimum. 6. Team History: (196 words) Quebec City Citadels was an expansion team in S55 along with the Nevada Battle Born. It Only took 2 seasons for Quebec to really get going finishing 1st in the regular season for the first time of many to come. Only took 1 more season to win their first Four Star Cup defeating Kelowna in the S58 finals. Quebec was a mainstay in the 3rd round or later in the late 50’s and early 60’s seasons. With a bit of a rebuild there, in S62-63 Quebec was back in the finals S64 but lost. 2 more finals appearances ended in losses S66 and S67. In S69 Quebec broke through and won the cup as the lowest seed to ever win the Four Star Cup since earliest S53. A bit of a decline there in the S70’s but come the last few seasons Quebec once again won S76 and S79. In the 24 seasons Quebec has existed they have made 8 finals, winning 4 of them. Add in all the conference finals appearances that ended in loss and Quebec has one of the most winning records since the team was created. Not bad if you ask me. Total: 658 words 18. On the Radar (161) Let's take a look at second-rounder Uwe Bindewald who just finished his rookie season being crowned a Four-Star Cup winner with the Québec City Citadelles. Bindewald plays a very solid and already somewhat mature defensive game. Slowly starting to fill out his 6ft 3in, 220 lbs frame, he also likes to hit and can show the occasional mean streak, which lead to a few penalties in the playoffs that could have been avoided. He also has decent set of hands and can drive the play from his zone if needed. This is also due to some intense coaching, which lead to his offensive read becoming much better and him being much less prone to mistakes while making a play. Speaking of coaching and development, Bindewald has shown a lot of willingness to learn and grow during his rookie year and if he continues down that path, this junior second rounder might have a pretty bright future ahead. 14. R&R (106) After all champagne has been downed and all parades finally ended, it's time for Uwe and his fiancée to head home to his native Germany. Time's spent hanging out with friends, eating his dad's Rinderrouladen and his mom's Butterkremtorte. Uwe also loves to assist his dad, former Eintracht Frankfurt Bundesliga legend Bindewald, at his soccer development camp where he helps local youths taking the next step in their development. There he can also use the training facilities to keep up with the daily program his coaches set up for him to stay in shape and prepare for his second SMJHL season. 15. Charity Drive (165) After eating at a local diner that had a Super Chexx near the bar, I had this idea to rent out a gymnasium during the offseason and hold a massive Super Chexx tournament. My rookie buddies were instantly on board and we quickly found a venue and even some local sponsors that were willing to help with the organisation and PR. Denny's will do the catering and hopefully a few of the Citadelles veterans will show up with the Four-Star Cup for autographs and photo ops. Talented Chexx players from all of the six Québec boroughs are invited to join us and duke it out until the QCC (Québec Chexx Cup) winner will be crowned. The money from the application fees as well as some donations from Citadelles players & staff and local businesses will be used to fund and support local hockey projects. If all goes well, this could become an annual thing and we're all looking forward to it. 16. Goals (257) I come from a family that already has a (at least locally) famous athlete, so there was definitely a bit of pressure on me once it became obvious that I had some talent in my chosen field. But I also drew inspiration from my dad's career. He wasn't the most skilled player, but made up for it with determination, work ethic and humility which lead to him becoming a fan-favourite. It's for others to judge my skill, but I'm trying my best to follow his example by leaving it all out there every shift, always sticking up for my teammates and doing my part so the team can thrive and win. Of course it would be a lie if I'd say that I had never dreamt of being drafted into the SHL and hopefully winning a cup one day. And now winning the Four-Star Cup in my very first year with Québec has of course increased that thirst for more. But luckily my coaches and my friends and family are doing their part to keep me humble, so I'll just keep plucking away and if at the end of it I can look back at a decent career and maybe some memorable games and seasons with my junior, pro and national teams, I can retire a happy man. And as to where that all might happen? I love it here in Canada, so I will definitely not complain if my pro career will mostly happen here as well. 18. Fan Appreciation Day The fans are what makes the game of hockey so amazing to be part of and Chaewon knows how to give back to her fans (coming from her k-pop days). Chaewon will be having a fanmeet up with Carolina Kraken fans and will be giving out Kraken hats, photocards, shirts, hoodies and a grand prize of a Chaewon signed jersey to a lucky fan and she will take a picture with this fan as well. Known for her vocal talents as well, Kim Chaewon will be singing some of her songs from Le Sserafim too at the fan meetup event. This event will allow fans to interact with Chaewon in an intimate setting and hopefully some of her Kraken will be able to show support at this event as well. Hopefully during this event the Kraken fans have an amazing time and are even more excited going into the next season. This can be a yearly end of season event that Chaewon can be a part of during her time in the juniors. (173 words) +3 Code: 3. Secret Plans Going into S80, the Carolina Kraken will look to improve by developing their chemistry with one another (especially their all rookie line from the previous season) they will be sophomores now and with more TPE that means better performance right? After an impressive rookie season for them, they will come into next season motivated and eager to build upon that season and show that this is a line to be afraid of when seeing on the ice. For Chaewon, her secret is countless hours of intense practice and training (during her k-pop idol days she had to memorize lyrics, choreo and sing all at the same time). This took a lot of coordination and watching recordings back to nail down her performance. She now does the same thing with her game on the ice and analyzes her play on the ice and sees how she can improve her weaknesses or any mistakes she may have made. As a rookie there weren’t many expectations for her but she had a great rookie season and hopes that a sophomore slump isn’t in her future as that is a common thing to see in hockey. One of her weaknesses will be her physical play as there are much more physically built players so Kim Chaewon will need to bulk up and hit the gym to stand her own ground when facing them. (229 words) +4 Code: 4. Funtimes The game of hockey is an intense sport not only physically but probably more mentally (especially if your team is slumping) so having outlets to get your mind off of hockey is key for a team’s psyche. As the Carolina Kraken’s fun director, Chaewon will look to build team rapport with one another and escape the crazy world of hockey and just enjoy each other’s company. The team will head out to go skiing at a local resort and hit the slopes. It will be interesting to see how good or bad people will be at skiing. After a long day of skiing, the team will enjoy a delicious team meal together in the local hotel lodge. There will be tons of tasty food, refreshing beverages and a chance for teammates to talk about how good or bad they were at skiing that day. Hopefully this event brings everyone closer together and can let them not think about hockey for a little bit. (163 words) +3 Code: 16. Goals Going into the SHL for the first time in December 2018, I just wanted to give it a shot and never had “goals” per say. I knew nobody and was happy to go to any team that would draft me. It was around a year or so before I started to get more involved with the league when I got a site job of being a media grader since I wanted to get more experience on the site, up my bank account and get a fancy site title. I don’t think I will ever have a personal goal stat wise since I don’t like to put numbers on things and would rather have team success/enjoyment over individual success. One thing I wanted to do with my current player is to be a center since I hear that is the position that FHM tends to gravitate the offense/points too and was the skater position I have yet to make during my time here. I guess it sort of resembles the NHL as well, because most of the offense is driven by the team’s center (McDavid, MacKinnon, Crosby, Bedard etc). In the words of MJ in Spider-Man “can’t be disappointed if you expect disappointment” so I like to set the bar low because you have nowhere to go but up. I am excited to go through the SHL scouting process again so curious as to which teams will look to scout me, but I am going to let teams know that if I don’t see myself going there I will let them know if they do reach out to me (similar to when I was a free agent with my last player Ben Jammin). I also found that being involved with a team’s front office/war room gets you more insight into the league and you can voice your opinion with your team’s management about any concerns that may arise or what the team’s future is looking like. I will also get to go through IIHF scouting too since I am unassigned for my nationality and the previous two times I just selected Canada since I didn’t put much thought into the IIHF/WJC. But getting to interact with other SHL people outside of my team will hopefully be a positive experience. (378 words) +7 Code: 18. Training hard and ensuring that he has what it takes to dominate the league in every aspect has been his first priority. Training his speed and physicality ensuring no breakaways are free. He has attached ankle weights to his skates and did laps. He would also film tiktoks in between these to send to his boy Leo Carlsson. After many laps with the ankle weights, Minty decided to drop them, the weights hit the ground hard with a loud bang, and visitors looked over to see what caused the noise. They saw Mintyukov speeding across the ice, back and forth, forth and back, speeding and gliding like skating was second nature to him. Once he had the speed down, he knew he had to get his stamina up, skating as fast as he could as long as he could and never slowing. Timing himself he would try to go as fast as he could for 4 minutes, once this became easy he added a minute. He would continue this to 8 minutes. Fully confident in his training regiment, he decided to focus his mind he needed to be able to predict his opponents. What better way to practice that then to enter a chess tournament. He started at a nearby park asking people to play with him and they did. At first he did not have such a great time, losing again and again. Then one game he saw it, the path to win. He started to move the pawns as a way to just block his opponents, and exhausting their resources, he knew he could apply this to the ice. His awareness was greatly increasing and did not seem to be slowing down. After the breakthrough he got back on the ice, playing some pick up games, these games he focused on exhausting his opponents, not giving them an inch, and he succeeded. Every transition into his zone, he hounded for the puck, placing his stick where he thinks they will go, shifting his body to allow the hit to be available to him no matter where they went. He wanted to be a brick wall that encased his opponents. Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide, Just Minty. When he was back home he would watch old game footage courtesy of Ottawa's finest, he watched game footage until he was exhausted, trying to see his own mistakes, seeing where he could do better and seeing when he did do better. He just knew there was something he could do to elevate his game mentally. Watching, learning, and remembering. He slowly learns his opponents more and more, learns how they play their favorite spots. Minty called up the Highlanders, and told them to meet him at a rink, they have some training to do. 12: On the Radar (193 words) With a late season start and no training camp, Pavel Mintyukov came into the season a little suddenly. He stumbled a bit but once he got it figured out, he looked great. Excelling in defensive categories and playmaking, Mintyukov would put up 20 assists, 42 takeaways, 86 blocks, and 90 hits. Mintyukov is a reliable defensemen who can help transitional starts the other way for his team. Having some of the most time on ice on his team, he is able to be out on the ice for a long time and contribute to many plays while also shutting some down. Some nights it can seem inconsistent on what Mintyukov will be more proficient at, and some nights he can really have an off night. The ceiling is high for this player but his floor needs to raise, if training camp goes well for them this year we hope to see more consistent games from him and a much sounder defense. If he can find that sweet spot in defense and offense, he could be a dynamic two way defensemen who can quarterback powerplays, while also shutting down plays on the Penalty Kill. The Whalers biggest need this season is defense. With all 3 of the Whalers top defensemen leaving for the SHL this offseason, the Whalers have massive holes to fill on the back end. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Whalers make some big swings to reinforce the d-core, as there are 4 spots available behind the rookie duo of Hans Gronlund and Zach Mulder. As far as stacked positions, the Whalers have a plethora of good wingers, including new veteran Levon Dojkic and rookie Aaron Noxus. Scoring from the wing has not been an issue for Vancouver this past season, and I don’t foresee it being an issue going into the next season. Vancouver is also stacked in net, with rookie Trent Mackenzie proving they can handle the load of a true starter (having started the maximum number of games a goalie can), as well as being one of, if not the only, goalie in the top 15 TPE earners of this draft class. The future is bright for Vancouver, but it also hinges on this offseason being successful, so the pressure is on for the GM duo. (188 words) 14. This offseason for me is going to be a busy one. I am currently participating in the WJC as a co-GM of Norway, alongside the most underrated person in this league @HillsHaveHats (the newly minted co-GM of New England, by the way). We’re gearing up for total domination of the WJC tournament this year, and by the end of it, my hope is that not only does the league as a whole take notice of myself as the newest up and coming GM prospect, but that HHH shows the world why his ascension to hand of the king in New England is going to go down as one of the biggest management steals in SHL history. I’ve already had the pleasure of working alongside him during the WJC draft (and have already had my ass bailed out by him after making my own mistakes), and it’s already clear that HHH is going to go FAR in his management career. Aside from the WJC tournament, this offseason is going to be spent continuing to improve my on ice play, and moving forward towards the goals I have set for myself. It’s no secret that Vancouver was less than stellar this past season, and I (along with my WONDERFUL counterpart and fellow S80 rookie defenseman @MightyMulder) have massive shoes to fill in Vancouver, with our top 3 defensemen departing for the SHL this offseason. I think we’re up to the challenge, and I’m ready for us to leave our mark on the SMJHL starting next season, but we have a long offseason in front of us and a ton of work we need to do to spearhead the next great Vancouver defense core. (281 words) 16. Personally, my goal this time around is to be one of the best defensive defensemen of all time. I’ve never been one for the “glory positions”, I’ve never been about scoring a ton of goals or slick cross crease passes. I want to be the guy who gets into the dirty areas and throws big hits, the guy who makes the opponent's lives hell whenever they choose to enter my zone. I want my goalie, whoever they end up being, to know that I will always bail them out of bad situations, that anytime they bite on a deke isn’t a thing to worry about because I’m always covering their open side. I want to be one of the best shutdown defenders the SHL has ever seen, the likes of which hasn’t been seen since the great Bojo Biscuit was making forwards regret ever taking up the game of hockey as a career. Is it possible? I think so, and with how determined I am, I would say it’s closer to likely than not. (174 words) 18. Fan Appreciation Day Who doesn’t like fan appreciation? In a huge season for the QCC there is a lot to appreciate about the fans! But of course nothing could be more memorable than the playoff towel. Fans who attended a game during the playoffs received a commemorative towel to hold up high and proud. Featuring the prominent logo of the QCC. Hope you got yours as these items went fast when the stadiums filled up. Of course it was a pure white towel with the logo but it did feature the year and Four Star Cup playoffs made to wave around while the QCC did their thing. We love our fans! But lucky for you, due to high demand and the QCC winning the Four Star Cup these towels will be added to the merch shop for anyone to purchase so that our fans worldwide, and those who could not attend a playoff game, can enjoy them. Word Count 154: 4 TPE 4. Funtimes There is a lowkey hotel stay in Utah that has a water slide poking out of the building and then wraps around down into the pool. From now on it should be mandatory that the team when booking hotels during travel have at least one water slide for fun. As for the off season, the team is going to enjoy a resort stay in the Caribbean (The water slide hotel rule still applies as such). It is not a well known fact but Lewis Holl is an avid saltwater fisherman whose biggest prey is the infamously aggressive and invasive lionfish. The team is going to enjoy spearfishing these invasive fish to help save the coral reefs and the many diverse fish that live there. Thanks Lewis Holl! Word Count 127: 3 TPE 7. Winner Winner Chicken Who won? The QCC! Lewis Holl and team were over the moon about the win! Of course the celebrations did not stop when they lifted the cup on the ice. But really the question comes down to how did they do it? Well, a little bit of everything of course. But if we want to get hyperfocused let’s take a closer look at that last series where it came down just to two. In a previous deep dive I examined the Raptors special teams. To give it a run down it suffered a little bit. I found they lacked scoring on the powerplay especially against a team like the Falcons. They did not score against the QCC once during the powerplay at all during the finals while letting a few squeak by their penaltykill unit. Special teams is one of the most important factors on the ice when it comes down to it. QCC managed to strike a good balance between the offensive and defensive special team units. Finding decent production on the powerplay and a strong penaltykill. Word Count 178: 5 TPE 13. Superstitious There are plenty of curses abound. It is extremely easy to look back and think, ‘Yeah, those curses do not scare me’. But at that moment, they were very real, and very scary. During the regular season the QCC would go on to take the number one spot in the standings. Dun dun duuuuun. Begin the realm of the curse. When taking the first overall even when the statbook looks like it is on your side it sometimes means getting bumped out of the playoffs even when by all means you should not. Or worse, making it all the way and still losing. Regardless, it means no Four Star Cup for you. QCC is especially no stranger to this phenomenon. In the last ten seasons starting with 69, the curse has only ever been broken four times. QCC has been on both ends of this, with them taking first overall and winning the Four Star Cup twice, and them taking the first overall twice and getting knocked out twice. The other major team to face this curse is the MET in recent memory. So is the curse even real? Well being right 60% of the time is not great odds. And that is only looking at recent history. The curse may or may not be real, but the pressure that is added to the players certainly is. Word Count 227: TPE 9 TOTAL WORDS: 686 MAX: 16 TPE RE: S79 SMJHL Postseason Bonanza - Marshi - 11-27-2024 16.) Goals (1 TPE) This one is easy. I said it before and i'll say it again: The Quebec City Citadelles are the best team in the league and they will continue to be. So I'll not be satisfied with just 1 Four Star Cup. The goal is 3 Four Star Cups in a row. Atleast, I'm fine with leaving the door open for more than that. (63 words) 17.) Feedback. (3 TPE) I have really enjoyed the PTs of my very first season. It allows to kind of tell a story of your player and roleplay a bit. The different tasks were very diverse and fun to do. However i find it a bit disappointing that it seems like noone other than the grading team is looking at them. There is basically zero interaction around the PTs and even though i really tried to tell a little bit of a story using a combination of the PTs and Media articles i feel even the SHL GMs who are scouting for the Draft right now don't even know the name of the player i have created. It's still fun to tell the story of my player for myself but if there was more interaction around the stories of the created characters other than quickly claiming some money or TPE and no one other than the grader even know it happened it would be alot more fun. (163 words) 18.) Milestones (3 TPE) https://simulationhockey.com/showthread.php?tid=139887&pid=3595995#pid3595995 10.) In the Zone (I guess i did write way too much, I'll take the remaining TPE here for a total of 16) Before talking about the greatest playoff clutch performer and not just contender, but without any discussion Playoff MVP of the SMJHL S79 Playoffs there a actually 4 very honorable mentions i want to highlight for this one: 1.) 4th year LW of the Carolina Kraken: Swedish Chef. This a no brainer, one can't talk about performing in the playoffs and not mention the leading goalscorer of the entire playoffs. Scoring 18 goals in just 17 games and being tied for first with 29 points in the playoff scoring race is peak playoff performance. However in the Carolina Krakens conference final defeat to the Colorado Raptors in 5 games, Swedish Chef did contribute only 2 goals and 2 assists in 5 games. In the most important games of the season, this simply wasn't enough if you want to lead your team to a Four Star Cup as Playoff MVP. 2.) Also tied for first with 29 points in the playoff scoring race was the Anchorage Armadas sophomore forward: Hughes Incorporated. While being part of a very competent scoring group during the regular season which had Hughes Incorporated 2nd within the team, in the playoff the scoring touch was on another level. Hughes Incorporated outscored the rest of the team by 11 or more points in just 16 games during the playoffs. Another peak playoff performance we're looking at. Other than Swedish Chef, Hughes Incorporated was the main contributer for his team in their 5 game fall to the later champions, the Quebec City Citadelles. But 3 goals and 4 assists in 5 games is not enough if you can't push the team around you to put more than 5 goals in 5 games on the board whithout your name on the scoresheet. 3.) My third honorable mention will be a member of the runner ups. The Colorado Raptors Rookie Center: Rocky Gislason. During the regular season, Rocky Gislason only averaged 16:42 minutes of icetime, only 3 seconds of powerplaytime and only 5 seconds on the penalty kill. A rookie as a thrid line plug, a role i know well. Still Rocky Gislason scored a very respectable 17 goals and 32 assists in 66 games. During the Playoff however the story was a different one. Rocky Gislason managed to lead the entire Colorado Raptors team with 13 goals in 21 playoff games while averaging 18:27 minutes of icetime including 1:09 minutes in average on the Raptors powerplay. Other than the last player on my honorable mentions list, this will probaly the biggest leap any player of the entire SMJHL took into the playoffs. However, when it mattered the most during the Four Star Cup Final, Rocky Gislason only managed to collect 1 goal and 1 assist in 5 games against the Quebec City Citadelles and was without a point during the last and deciding double Overtime game. So Rocky Gislason may be the most imroved player going into the playoffs. But is no Playoff MVP. 4.) My fourth and last honorable mention did not make it very deep into the playoffs. But could have become a storyline for a movie if just 1 game went a bit different in the past. I'm talking about Yukon Malamutes second year goaltender: Jakub Alexa. During the regular season, Jakub Alexa did not shine or stand out in any way. A very average goaltender on a not too god team. During the playoffs however, Jakub Alexa suddenly turned into the leagues very best goaltender and managed to win more games against the cup winning Quebec City Citadelles than the entire rest of the league combined, falling sjort by just 1 game to knock them out in the 2nd round of the playoffs entirely. The Malamutes may lost this series 3:4 but they outscored the Citadelles 25:20 during tha series while being outshot 261:236. But in the end Citadelles goalie QCCBot came up with a game 7 Shutout to win the head to head goalie duell and prevent any literal underDOG story this could have turned into. It's time to reveal the Playoff MVP and biggest clutch performer, of the Quebec City Citadelles: Sophomore Forward: Dejana Kaptina! After bing only 5th on the team in scoring during the regular season, Dejana Kaptina first on the Citadelles during the playoffs, scoring 16 goals and 13 assists in 21 games and also tied for first in the entire league. However Dejana Kaptina did it while only averaging 36 seconds of icetime on the Powerplay and played 2:04 minutes on average on the penalty kill instead where Kaptina was tied for 1st in the league in SH Points with teammate Gordon McFisherman. Kaptina also lead the league with 6 game winning goals while one of those was the cupwinning goal in double Overtime against the Colorado Raptors. Dejana Kaptina also scored the 3rd period tieing goal and the winning OT goal in game 5 agains the Yukon Malamutes which in hindsight, saved the entire Quebec City Cuprun. Simply the best of the best when it matters the most and everything is on the line: Dejana Kaptina is without a question the MVP of the SMJHL S79 Playoffs. On the Radar Pre-Draft Scout Report: Ethan Cross Position: Center | Height: 6'1" | Weight: 190 lbs | Playstyle: Two-Way Forward As the S80 SHL Draft approaches, Ethan Cross has set himself up as one of the more exciting prospects to come out of the San Diego Tidals system. A two-way center built off the dynamic playstyle of Sydney Crosby, Cross mingles hockey IQ, defensive reliability, and offensive versatility in what should be an intriguing selection for teams looking for balance with high impact. Strengths: - Faceoff Dominance: With a 58.9% faceoff win rate during their rookie season and steadily improving in that area, Cross brings critical puck possession skills that every team needs - Defensive Reliability: Strong attributes in defensive read and stick checking have made Cross one of the best players at breaking up plays and causing disruptions. The physicality, complimented with the recent upgrades to Hitting, adds an element of nastiness to his game - Offense: Although statically, there is still work to be done in the possession game, Cross was clutch in the limited playoffs run in the rookie season with 5 goals and 4 assists in 7 games, including a game-winning goal. A high scoring percentage in the playoffs (71.4%) shows evidence to be precise and convert scoring chances with skill. Overall Outlook: Ethan Cross has a very high floor and an even higher ceiling. They will be a valuable addition to any SHL team that needs a center that can create scoring chances and help on the defensive side. Even though I am not as active in the LR, I am on top of my weekly tasks and gain TPE to improve my player over time. While Cross isn't overall dominant offensively, his two-way play should make any SHL team better and become a cornerstone prospect to develop and help a team for their very best! Comparable Player: Patrice Bergeron with a touch of physicality. Code: 311 Words |
