SHL Awards Team - Mid Season Preview - CapnCooper - 12-30-2024 Happy Holidays SHL! Everyone has been pretty busy, and a lot of discord chats are a little slower than usual, but the league hasn't slowed down one bit! The awards committee took some time to discuss a few of the players to watch and @spidey has helped to wrap those thoughts up into some words! So please have a look at the committee's mid season preview! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hello SHL, it is that time of year once again. Mid-season preview of the SHL awards! Like so many seasons before there have been a ton of twists and unexpected rises from the players around the league. The awards team have been hard at work trying to figure out whom would be the most deserving of these prestigious awards, it's still early and anything can happen with half the year left, but here are some early leaders for some of the awards at play. John McBride: Ok I am the first one to poke fun at TPE and goalies don’t really matter, but the truth is these guys can steal a game all on their own. They are the most important part of a team, and without these guys between the pipes performing at a top level our teams would flounder. This year there is a real battle for number one and a few fresh faces and some old favourites looking to make their claim for the McBride. Justin Time - Is there a point he is not in the conversation for the McBride? Leading all starters in GAA at 2.64 and a healthy save percentage of .902. He is third best in wins with 18 and sits second in shutouts with 3 this season. Bernard Lodge - This has been a long time building for the veteran goalie. He is finally seeing his due. Don’t let his 12 wins this season fool you. This guy has been on a tear. Leads the league in shutouts with 5, the best save percentage among starters with .914 and a healthy GAA at 3.09. Anastasia Soderstrom - This girl is on fire! Second among starters with a .912 save percentage and 3.24 GAA. She is a very big reason Calgary is doing as well as they are currently doing. The awards team are following her closely to see how the rest of the season plays out. In the hunt: Base Pack - Cage veteran is having another amazing season Tibuk Soonika - An amazing second week has vaulted him into the conversation. Herman Stahl - A backup??? 2 shutouts, .932 save percentage and 2.40 GAA would put him in the league lead if he was playing more often. Scott Stevens: It is often said goals win games, but defense wins championships. There is no doubt these players give their team a real chance to hold a lead or even help gain the lead with their phenomenal two way play. They are assets that every team dreams of having and in some ways more valuable than an MVP of the league. Elena Maximova - Perhaps a perennial favourite for this award, Maximova has consistently performed well nearly every season in the SHL, this one is no different. She is one goal shy of the defense lead with 11, leads in assists (24) and points (35). No stranger to the rough stuff with 48 penalties on the season. Elena can do it all, power play, shorthanded, it doesn’t matter she is out to win. Will Nuck - A new addition to the award nominations, Will has exploded this year, half a season in and nearly at his point totals from last year. 9 goals, 23 assists has him second in defensive points with 32. This third year player may not have the experience of Elena, but he is doing everything he can to prove he is just as talented. Kal Akar Kekkonen - Getting the slight nod over his defensive partner with 4 more goals (11) and 3 more points (32), he has been a workhorse for Seattle. He has worked hard to earn his spot on the powerplay and even eaten up some valuable minutes on the PK, quickly the 4th year is becoming a do everything defender for the surprising Seattle squad. In the hunt: Mikkel Enevoldsen - leads all defenders with 12 goals, keep your eyes on this one. Toasty - 10th in points, 1st in plus minus, the reigning champ is far from out of it. Shnopple Lopple - 11 goals, tied for 10th in points, top 5 for shots, top 10 for hits. Do everything defender. Joe Mckeil: While the GMs of a team build their roster to become a championship team, it is the coaching that gets the most out of their players. These coaches can bring a mid tier roster and get them to overperform creating a monster, or it can lower great players and have them fall in the standings and the playoffs. This year has been filled with surprises and we here at the awards committee can’t wait to see how the rest of the season plays out. Manhattan Rage - What else can be said about this roster. They have jumped from rebuild to the top of the standings in a season that many did not believe they would be in the top of the league. 2nd best powerplay, league's best PK, low penalty minutes, they are doing everything they can to win. Seattle Argonauts - Another example of the right players, right strategies and puck luck going their way. Seattle has put on a clinic of how to build a roster and get the most out of them to see results. They were expected to be a playoff team coming in, but among the top, this was a surprise, and they are doing it in a surprising way, mid special teams, but 4th best goal differential! Atlanta Inferno - Who in the crowd knew Atlanta would be a good team? I think everyone can say yes. Who knew they would be sitting number 1 at the midpoint this season? I don’t think anyone had that on their bingo card. Second best goal differential and at home they have been an absolute monster playing 18-1-0. Better hope they do not get home ice advantage in the playoffs. Buffalo Stampede - They are doing it by living on special teams! Power play is the best in the league, their PK is sitting at third best. This is a team that just never gives up no matter what kind of expectations are thrown at them, rebuild…nah we don’t do that in Buffalo. In the Hunt: San Francisco Pride - The top team last season is still in the hunt for this season. They have an amazing roster so that needs to be held in account. Jeff Dar: A jack of all trades is a master of none, but every team needs players who are accountable in all three zones, they can chip in points, and they can help keep the net clear. These are the guys that allow others to be a little reckless whether it is collecting points or getting penalties, these are the guys that hold the line to help their team win games. Sonja Solberg - This forward sits at a healthy 39 points, you know they are shipping in offensively. They also carry the third most blocked shots among forwards with 42 and the second lowest goals against per 60 minutes at 2.9. All this while playing a healthy 1:26 on average short handed time. Ubba Lodbrok - Owns one of the best defensive game ratings in the league this year. Ubba has shown solid defensive stats across the board against his fellow forwards, truly a jack of all trades with no real weakness. 41 points is a healthy number for a two way forward, and tied for the best goals against per 60 minutes, amongst the group at 2.4. Jiggle E. Puff - Second in the league among forwards in short handed time (3:28). Among the existing group, second best +/- (21), best for shots allowed (28.6) and goals against per 60 (2.4). Jiggly has done a lot to become a true two way beast. In the Hunt: Adam Prpich - Leading all forwards in short handed time with 3:33 Marc Turner - Leading all forwards with the most takeaways 43 Rikkert Biemans - Leading all forwards with the most blocked shots 47 Ron Mexico: This has been the award that traditionally goes to the league leader in points and/or goals. These are the guys that helped carry a team to the playoffs and stood out as the league leader, typically in points. There are some new names to this list, and there are some old names pushing for another chance at this Award, we can’t wait to see how the rest of the season shakes out for these legends. Chris Valentine - The reigning champ is showing no signs of slowing down. He is tied for the league lead in points (57) and sits 4th for goals (25). Texas is very lucky to have this warrior on their side. Konig Wolf - This year Chris has a running mate in Texas, tied for league lead in points (57) and third in league lead in goals (26). It will be interesting to see if either one of them can gain a lead on one another. Jae-ik Barron - The South Korean center playing in Atlanta has exploded onto the scene this year leading the league in goals with (30) and tied for 9th with 50 points. They are a big reason Atlanta has performed so well this year. Trevor Lahey - Sitting second in goals with 28 and third in points with 56, just one behind the pace of the leaders, playing for a team that is struggling at the bottom of the standings. If Hamilton makes it to the playoffs with a winning record and Lahey can keep pace, would it earn him the trophy? In the Hunt: Johnny Wagner-Svensson - Is he ever not in conversation for this award? 55 points this season. Jarrod Lakemore - Once again a perennial player that always has his name in the mix for this one. 55 points. With half the season now over, there is still a lot of time to see changes and anything can and will happen in the SHL. Good luck to everyone as we continue to move forward. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks once again to the committee members for getting their thoughts together. So far discussions have been great. We definitely have a lot more to talk about, especially once the holiday hustle is over. I'd also like to once again thank @FuzzSHL for letting us use his cards as they help the committee get a good visual look at players as well as provide users here with a nice visual on the forums!
Happy Holidays from the SHL Awards Committee! Enjoy the rest of your holiday break and we'll see you in the new year! (Please pay out 95% media to @spidey, I'll take 5% for editing and short blurbs) RE: SHL Awards Team - Mid Season Preview - hhh81 - 12-30-2024 Wins are a team category, not a goalie category. Shouldn't be factored in for McBride. RE: SHL Awards Team - Mid Season Preview - spidey - 12-30-2024 12-30-2024, 03:22 PMhhh81 Wrote: Wins are a team category, not a goalie category. Shouldn't be factored in for McBride. I do agree and disagree. It is a tracked goalie stat in all league's from fantasy to NHL. It shouldn't nessicarily boost a goalie into consideration of an award (please look at the fact the top two winning goalies are not currently on the board, one is in the hunt). A goalie should have a winning record but is not 100% nessicary (Lodge is a great example of this, just barely above .500 but even if he went below, he has played so well he would be considered for the award). Generally speaking when I put wins in on a media piece it is more about fluff and an add-on. Less about the weight of a statistical category. RE: SHL Awards Team - Mid Season Preview - luke - 12-30-2024 awesome work spidey! RE: SHL Awards Team - Mid Season Preview - micool132 - 12-30-2024 in the teams graphs, they all have the same PP and PK % RE: SHL Awards Team - Mid Season Preview - CapnCooper - 12-30-2024 12-30-2024, 04:17 PMmicool132 Wrote: in the teams graphs, they all have the same PP and PK %Oh neat I'll have a look and fix that after if I can. Not sure if I can lol. RE: SHL Awards Team - Mid Season Preview - Grapehead - 12-31-2024 12-30-2024, 03:22 PMhhh81 Wrote: Wins are a team category, not a goalie category. Do we really need this comment in every awards thread? Can you literally offer no other comment on the hard work put into this article than to bitch about a stat you don't like looking at? How would we remove a stat? Just not show how many games a team won? This is a valid criticism, and it comes up as often as it does because people keep trying to present it as something it’s not. He’s right, and so are the other people who’ve made this comment. Every time we add new people to the awards committee it seems like we have this discussion over again. Some stats are important for some awards and some are not. It’s okay for people to observe that, especially when it appears that new people have joined the committee who haven’t been part of the past discussions, without having to worry about basically getting told to sit down and shut up. While we are on it, I'll say it here and hope it gets back to the award committee: Game Rating is not an objective or even useful metric to compare across teams, and should be thrown out. Don't use it, don't look at it, ignore it, I beg you. I made that mistake back in like S51, and it stuck with me. In my time on the committee we've never used wins as a significant factor (it's just often a relevant fluff thing to mention when recapping performance, as Spidey said). We've also actively shut down mentions of game rating and taught new members why it's not to be used. RE: SHL Awards Team - Mid Season Preview - spidey - 12-31-2024 I am just speculating, and I could be wrong so please do not read too much into it. I believe the frustration is from not having trust in the Award team's process and our ability to produce the right results. In the article there are only two mentions of wins with 6 goalies they are: "He is third best in wins this season" "Don't let his 12 wins this season fool you" Which should be an indicator that wins are not an important stat to the awards comittee, as we looked at those with a ton of wins and those who are just barely scrapping by and focus on their individual stats. Thank you for the feedback on game rating. I don't think anyone of us new or old was even looking at it at any point. In honesty, is there anything else we should keep in mind to ensure we are completing this as best we can. I or any awards committee member would be happy to let you know what is going on in our process in general terms and would be happy to hear your thoughts. RE: SHL Awards Team - Mid Season Preview - Grapehead - 12-31-2024 Yes, as always, we're all welcome to comment and reply whatever we like. I wasn't going for a "sit down and shut up" vibe, but oh well. RE: SHL Awards Team - Mid Season Preview - UptownCord - 12-31-2024 12-30-2024, 03:44 PMspidey Wrote: I do agree and disagree.
