RE: S80 Championship Week - cake307 - 01-23-2025 CW Pass RE: S80 Championship Week - Muerto - 01-23-2025 1. CW TRIVIA, 3 TPE max crumb 8. Written, 50 to 200+ words. Dynasty in the Making San Francisco is certainly a team which shows that a rebuild done right can really be a great journey to the top. As good as they are now, it is easy to forget that as recently as Seasons 68-70 they were a lottery team with a dismal streak of missing the playoffs. But they were committed to growing as a young group, starting in those late S60's they really focused on drafting strong, culminating in a huge draft in S71 when they had three top 5 picks and nailed them all. Those three players are still with the team and have been huge parts of their success so that is real props to the scouting staff for targeting the right players. Along with this strong drafting, the management team made a lot of really shrewd and opportunistic trades, targeting high earning players whose peaks aligned with those of their core, often managing to get salary retention to ease the cap hit. Obviously the great Edmonton Fire Sale after they won their cup was great for the Pride as well as that is when they were able to bring in Justin Time who is arguably the greatest goaltender of his generation. Obviously the Pride are not the first time to have a successful rebuild so I wouldn't say they blazed new trails or anything, but when you see results like they have, and seeing that they will still probably continue to be strong for a few more seasons, you know that they are doing it right. [255 words : +4 TPE] 11. Written, 50 to 200+ words. Did We Really Win The situation in both conferences where the wildcard team from 1 division had a better record than second and third place teams seemed on paper to give the advantage to that wildcard team. However as it played out, neither wildcard team was able to take advantage of getting slotted into the 'weaker' division as Los Angeles lost in the first round and Philadelphia got ousted by Toronto in the second round. I don't know if strategically either team was deliberately trying to 'tank' into the crossover position but I don't think they were. It's a tough spot to be in because you know you will be on the road to start every series and most playoff teams are stronger at home regardless of their overall record so it's not as advantageous as you might think. Moreso it's just the nature of having conferences where one division has a lot of good teams that you will see this situation sometimes. I wouldn't change it though, it's fun to see some different playoff matchups in the first round rather than strict divisional brackets. Which team would your player root for in the finals and why? William Salming will root of course for the team which has a chance to prevent other team to win back-to-back title. Why? Because Salming was part of Seattle Argonauts which won back-to-back titles in S67 and S68. He wants to still keep that latest record within himself and his team mates. That is the main reason why Salming will root for of course that Tampa Bay Barracuda will beat San Francisco Pride. If not, then Salming will sure congratulate Pride organisation for the job well done. It will be very interesting to see which tactical elements will Barracuda to use to stop the powerhouse team of San Francisco. The challenge will be a huge but everything is possible in ice-hockey. Words: 100+ 8. Written, 50 to 200+ words. Dynasty in the Making San Francisco has made the finals for two seasons in a row now and has won the cup twice in the last 5 seasons with a chance to make it 3. What has made San Francisco so successful? Is it immaculate drafting? Coaching? Hard work from each of their players? All of the above? Should teams learn from SFP and emulate what they’ve done to get their time in the limelight? In successful organisations, everything starts from the top. The winning culture is created by the owner of the franchise. In this case, the biggest reason too is that the owner of the Pride is very good in his task. He knows how to handle the players, GM's, coaches, managers, scouting staff and employees. Of course, Pride has too some quality players like Logan Webb who leads the team in playoff points after 16 matches. Dominik Winters is good center, Sydney Shaw can move the puck from the blue line, Levin Schattedxg or whatever his name is written can bring some secondary scoring, Viktor Hargreeves is a proven two-way centerman, Oskar Scholz is very talented Danish winger, Mercedes Bayle is as fast as the Mercedes-Benz Car and can burn defenses that way, Filip Svatos is skillful Czech winger, Lucas Raymond is a Swedish diamond and in the net Justin Time is almost as clutch as Mat Smith was once upon a time. So, the player material gives them a chance to succeed but of course you need to have too some solid coaching. Bruce Cassidy is one of the best in the world at his job. He can really organize team defences without losing too much offensive firepower. Sydney Shaw has an incredible 6 powerplay goals leading the league this playoffs by 3x any other player, as a defenseman no less! Is there something San Francisco is doing differently to make Shaw a power play sniper? I would say the San Francisco Pride just have a very good and balanced roster. There anyone with an important role can bring up very high numbers like Logan Webb with his Goals per Game ratio in the Playoffs. So for me it was very sure that they will dominate several sections for forwards and defender. I can't wait to see how the Challenge Cup Final will go and in the end how many Powerplay Goals will Sydney Shaw have. But also the Tampa Bay Barracuda have a nice Roster and also individual players with nice numbers. So yeah this finals could be very wild. (105 words = 2 TPE) 5. If the SHL finals were to be held in another country this season, where would the best place be and why? I would like to see the finals in germany. Any game in a different City. Hamburg would be the start. After that we would travel to Köln (Cologne). Then the next stop would be Mannheim. The Game 4 would be in Berlin. The next game would be in München (Munich). Game 6 we would go to Düsseldorf and Game 7 to Frankfurt/Main. I really would like to see that in the future. (71 words = 1 TPE) 7. Who you got? Who wins the Challenge Cup or Four Star Cup? Why? In the SHL I would go with the San Francisco Pride. Overall for me they have the better roster in any section. A top Goalie, Top Defender and Top Forwards. It will be tight but yeah they should win the finals. All other would surprise me here but it also would be an honor for Tampa Bay Barracuda to win their second Challenge Cup in Franchise History since S18 as they were named Seattle Riot. In the SMJHL I would say roster based the Quebec City Citadelles should win the Cup. They were winning the regular season with an incredible goal difference of +185. They also scored an incredible 374 Goals and just had 189 Goals against. In the North Conference Finals they beat the rushing Anchorage Armada in 7 Games. I predict that the Quebec City Citadelles will win the Four Star Cup in 5 or 6 Games and would just prove the odds. (155 Words = 3 TPE) 10. Written, 50 to 200+ words. The Unexpected Toronto ended up making it into the playoffs by one point while Atlanta had the best regular season since S71 Winnipeg. Yet in the playoffs Atlanta ended up losing the second round, while Toronto made it to the conference finals. Does regular season success matter in the long run if the team fumbles in the playoffs? Should teams give much importance to the regular season or focus all of their energy to playoffs once their team has secured a spot? Should the league in general regard the regular season results more highly? I would always say the Regular Season is important and you need to reach a playoff spot. But the Post season or in other words the Playoffs always are a restart. So you surely can win a series against a team you never would believe after a regular season. You also in the other way can lose against a Team playoff series you never would believe. It is always not easy to say why Teams could be better than all predict or in other way bad in comparison to the regular season. I wouldn’t say it is a lottery but still not 100% predictable.
