- Corco - 01-03-2012 The Veterans: Mike Honcho - Toronto North Stars ![]() Honcho celebrating his S3 Cup win with MacDonald at his side Career Stats: Games Played: 164 Wins: 141 Losses: 43 OTL: 26 SVPCT: .935 GAA: 1.85 SO: 16 Mike Honcho, born and raised in Denver, Colorado is quite possibly the best SHL goaltender of all time. His statistics and achievements are unparalleled by any other goaltender, with the exception of Fernando Garcia. Some of Honcho's achievements include, but are not limited to; 3 straight Veznia trophies, S1 Mike Honcho Award, 5 straight All-Star Game appearances, a Conn Smythe, and William Jennings trophy. He spent 90% of his career in Edmonton where he experienced most of his success, including a championship in S3 and S4 before being traded to Toronto the past season and going 9-5-0 with them while posting a .937 Save Percentage and a 2.22 Goals Against Average. ![]() Honcho denying a goal with one of his trademark windmills However Honcho is getting up there in age. He was traded from Edmonton due to a youth movement taking place, but one could also say that the reason was due to the youth movement, which would mean Honcho would be getting less playing time, splitting with the goalie of the future (now Jonas Gustavo). Regardless, Mike Honcho is an SHL legend, inspiring other goaltenders, such as Marshall MacPherson and such. There is no doubt his number will be retired and hung in the rafters in Edmonton. Fernando Garcia - West Kendall Platoon ![]() Garcia making a save against Minnesota Career Stats: Games Played: 264 Wins: 170 Losses: 63 OTL: 29 SVPCT: .934 GAA: 1.92 SO: 28 Here we have the man who has been in the shadow of Mike Honcho his entire career. Although Garcia has the edge in Shutouts, Wins, and Games Played, Honcho has him beat in almost every other category. However when it gets to Awards, its a toss up. Garcia has 3 William Jennings Trophies, 2 Veznia Trophies, a Conn Smythe, and finally a Masterson trophy. If Honcho is the best goalie in SHL history, Garcia is a very close statistical second, and unlike Honcho, he has spent his entire career with one team, West Kendall, to which he has been the backbone of the team, and carrying the team on his back at times. ![]() Garcia blocking a shot Just like Honcho however, Garcia isn't getting any younger. It would appear now that his best years are behind him, and he and the West Kendall Platoon knew this. Hence, the team drafted Swedish netminder, Sven Andersson to be heir to Garcia. Expect to see these two begin to gradually split goaltending duties in West Kendall in the near future. Ryan Jesster - Calgary Dragons ![]() Jesster in action against Minnesota Career Stats: Games Played: 202 Wins: 84 Losses: 89 OTL: 26 SVPCT: .928 GAA: 2.13 SO: 13 Here we have the "least" successful Veteran goaltender, award wise. Ryan Jesster, born and recruited out of Buffalo has not won a championship or major award other than SHL MVP. However he is far better than his record suggests, as his supporting cast was never as talented as his fellow greybeards'. His reaction time and Hand-eye coordination are elite level, and he is often the reason Calgary is in playoff contention year after year. ![]() Jesster in shootout action One problem for Calgary. If Jesster goes down with injury, there is not a competitive backup, which also brings up the fact that Calgary does not have a goalie of the future. Look for them to acquire one through trade or the draft 600 Words 6 Pictures - Giova69 - 01-03-2012 sweet read - Daco - 01-03-2012 Honcho was in Garcia's shadow at first if anything, Garcia established himself as an epic goalie with a ridiculous first season. - Fernando - 01-03-2012 Quote:Originally posted by TACOLORDOFEVIL@Jan 3 2012, 09:57 PM LOL Honcho wasn't around in season one, honestly i don't think that i am in his shadow, and i don't think that he is in my shadow, i think we both are in equal footing. - sarmo - 01-03-2012 i love this, garcia's and honcho's stats are legendary. Goaltenders are def. gonna have a hard time beating records, only the best. - Daco - 01-03-2012 Quote:Originally posted by Fernando@Jan 3 2012, 10:01 PM ... you seriously think I didn't know that? I know he was drafted in s2. I was saying if anything, rather than you being in his shadow it would be the other way around since you had established yourself as the best and he was coming in as a rookie - Fernando - 01-03-2012 Quote:Originally posted by TACOLORDOFEVIL@Jan 3 2012, 10:06 PM Oh i was replying to Corcoran, i completely agree with your logic man. - Mac - 01-03-2012 Nicely done article :D - Daco - 01-03-2012 Quote:Originally posted by Fernando@Jan 3 2012, 10:08 PM oh ok lol, it showed you quoting me so I assumed the reply was intended to me  - NateyD - 01-04-2012 It's cool to see how close Jesster is with these two, even though our team had been shit usually. Terrific article, going to be interesting to see which goalies thrive when these three retire. - sorryifarted - 01-04-2012 jeester can play forever! ageless wonder - Shadow - 01-04-2012 Cant Wait for the Rookies. - Duey - 01-04-2012 whatever happened to Dave Vargo? He go inactive trying to wait out Jesster? lol - Corco - 01-04-2012 Quote:Originally posted by Duey722@Jan 4 2012, 03:36 PMHasn't been online since September - McDonald - 01-04-2012 Honcho was traded because he is a C u n t not because of a youth movement, he wanted to win and he will regret leaving (and there was communication difficulty) but I still love him <3 |
