For the final task of Championship Week we will be doing a scouting report on a player that played in the championship. You may use the same player that another used, but you cannot just copy and paste a fellow members. In this scouting report, all that I want is information on the playoffs, or championship series. The TPE payout for this will be one TPE per every hundred words. The max amount of TPE that you will be able to earn from this task is 3. Good luck, and have fun!

This task will be due 1/16/13 at 10:00PM CST</div>

Position: Left Wing
Date of Birth: September 19th, 1993
Place of Birth: Vancouver, BC
Ht: 6' - 1" Wt: 200
Shoots: Left
Number: 21

What Webb Brings To The Table:

One of the best most proficient scorers, Kain Webb has laid a path of destruction through out his SHL career. Webb has become one of the biggest pieces on the Calgary Dragon's lineup and is a regular contributor. Webb is an offensive forward that brings a fine tuned mix of skill, speed and intensity. Webb has a knack for finding the net and can do so while still maintaining a high ability to distribute the puck to his other line mates.

The Numbers:

This past season Kain Webb was able top put up great numbers this season in the SHL, and although he didn't finish at the top of the league he sure made his presence felt on the ice. Kain Webb was able to find his self finishing the season only 1st in one main category, being shots taken, but Webb was able to finish 10th among left wingers in the SHL in points. Webb also was the main fixture on the powerplay as he led the Dragons with 10 PP goals, which placed him tied for 4th in the SHL.

Kain Webb's Stat Line:

Goals: 31
Assists: 37
Points: 68
Shots: 179
+/-: -9

His Role In Calgary:

Kain Webb has played a very important role for the Dragons in helping reach the finals in the S11 Season. Webb finished second on the Dragons with points and second on the team with assists. Webb has found him self in a role to be a leader on the team and a player that a lot of the incoming rookies are looking up to. Webb has the ability to change and control a game and on occasion place the team on his back and help carry them.

The Wrap Up:

Kain Webb will continue to be a very strong force in the SHL and should continue to put up great numbers for the Calgary Dragons and continue to lead them to many more appearances in the playoffs and maybe in the Challenge Cup Finals.

Hockey North Scouting Report:

Name: Vladislav Smirnov
Position: Defence
Years in League: 7
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 198 lbs

Overview:

Now in his seventh season in the league, the former Toronto North Stars draft pick appears to be coming into his own in the SHL, given the opportunity to succeed with heaving playing minutes and a larger role with the Calgary Dragons. The smooth-skating defenceman isn't the biggest defenceman on the ice, but makes up for his lack of size with excellent instincts and the ability to make quick decisions -- something that played a key role to the Dragons' run to the Challenge Cup this past season.

Greatest Assets:

Smirnov's greatest asset is his overall defensive ability. While he's a quick skater and serves as one of his team's most significant offensive presences, amazingly it can be argued that his strongest suit is his ability to shut down opposing superstar forwards. His skating ability allows him to stay with the league's best stride for stride, while his tremendous hockey sense makes him one of the SHL's most sound players positionally.

Smirnov is rarely caught out of position, and knows how to jump into the rush and provide offensive opportunities for his team without becoming a defensive liability.

Weaknesses:

One thing Smirnov needs to work on is his overall body strength, as he weighs in at a slender 198 pounds -- considered to be fairly small for a defenceman standing at over six feet tall. Smirnov can generally make up for his lack of bulkiness with his speed, conditioning, and positioning, but can be overpowered and therefore outmatched when up against some of the league's more physically dominating forwards, such as Grigori Pajari of the North Stars.

Puck handling is another area that he needs to continue to work on, although it has clearly improved as his career has gone along. He has a tendency to cough the puck up every once in a while in the neutral zone, which can sometimes cost his team a goal the other way. Luckily for Smirnov, his skating ability often allows him to make up for his mistakes carrying the puck.

Conclusion:

At best, Smirnov is a top-pairing defenceman that provides a solid offensive thread combined with definite defensive reliability. He's proven he can handle quality minutes on a very good hockey team, and as the Dragons head into a rebuild with Smirnov apparently in their long-term plans, it looks like he'll have to continue to adapt to first-line minutes.

Although suited for a top-line role in some situations, Smirnov might be more comfortable in a second-pairing role, where he's not required to match up against the league's best every minute he's on the ice, and he's allowed to roam a little more and focus on producing offensively, too.

Ultimately though, Smirnov is a very strong, All-Star calibre defenceman, and while he falls short of the 'elite' category, he's likely emerged as a second-level player and can continue to strive for even more. For a third round pick that was traded by the Stars for a useless draft pick, Smirnov has come a long way in proving himself as a star defenceman in this league.

There's very little debate that Calgary's Cinderella run to the Finals was the lone product of The American Legend, Goaltender Ryan Jesster.

Battling back from injury this past off season, few thought Jesster could still compete at the highest of levels in the sport. Veteran experience was fading from asset to hindrance and time was catching up with Jesster's body. The former first overall draft pick was beginning to see the sunset on his career and the emergence of rookie standout Mike 'Sex Panther' Verminski was only accelerating it. Ryan knew this may be his last shot at another ring and he had to make the most of it. And he did. Turning out a series of stunning games that took his once dominate Calgary Dragons back to the Cup Finals for perhaps the last time.

Adding to his impressive and historic resume, the six foot two netminder added nine more Playoff victories, leading the Calgary Dragons past the Edmonton Blizzard and the the Texas Renegades to emerge as the Western Conference Champions yet again.

Once in the Finals, Jesster continued to prove the critics wrong as he came up with highlight reel save after highlight reel save. His brilliant performance in Game Four when facing elimination showed that the true heroes of this sport are never too old to step up and that when the chips are down, its your veteran stars that come up clutch. Ryan put on a marvelous show this post season and few can argue that he carried Calgary further than anyone expected.

Jesster and the Dragons went home empty handed after Game Five, but even if this was his last performance between the pipes, Jesster skates off as an icon of the game and a legend of the League, sure to make it to the Hall of Fame whenever he decides to hang up the catching glove and mask.

Roman Schultz Scouting Report

Position: Defense
Jersey Number: 55
Age: 17
Birthplace: Natick, Massachusetts
Experience: Rookie
Height: 6'8 (203.2 cm)
Weight: 250 lbs (113.4 kg)

Overview:

Schultz, the fifth overall pick in the season 11 SHL entry draft is a strong defensive defenseman. While his main focuses are hitting players, blocking shots, and doing whatever else it takes to help his team win he is by no means an offensive slouch. Schultz finished the season with 12 points (all assists) to go along with his +17 rating, 84 hits, and 30 blocks.

Strengths:

As previously mentioned, Schultz's biggest strength is his defensive game. He is the best defensive defenseman from his draft class, and it's scary to think about how good he will be after a few more years of training. Aside from his defense, Roman also puts up highlight reel hits night after night and can defend his teammates when needed as evidenced by his 2 fighting majors on the season. Schultz is also pretty good at skating and puck handling, he also has a way of finding the sticks of teammates on the ice.

Weaknesses:

The biggest hole in Schultz's game is that he is not a scorer, if that can even be considered a hole. Defensive defensemen in general focus on positioning and keeping the puck out of their net more than putting it in the opponent's so not scoring is territory that most defensive defensemen don't wander towards. He could, in theory, work on his shot once he is content with his defensive play, but whether or not that happens remains to be seen.

Captain America:

Not only is Schultz a cup winner in his rookie season, he also is very important to the USA in international competition this season. He is a top pairing defenseman in the IHF world juniors where he put up 1 goal and 13 assists in 14 games. He is also the USA's GM for the IHF games and has put together a team he hopes will bring home gold. Even when not in the playoffs, Schultz is busy.

Wrap up:

Roman Schultz is one of the best up and coming defensemen in the league. Going into his sophomore season, he already has a Challenge Cup to his name, and will be playing for a IHF World Juniors gold tonight. I'm no fortune teller, but anyone can see that Roman Schultz has a very bright career ahead of him in the SHL.

Brodie Witzel
Position:C/LW
Age:20
Drafted: 4th overall to the Minnesota chiefs S5

What makes Witzel a strong hockey player?
Brodie Witzel is an elite player in the SHL, he has been elite for almost every single season in his career. Witzel Hits, he passes and he can shoot the puck, GREAT face-off man. he is the perfect two way forward that will produce for your team every night. He also works hard every game to help his team win hockey games, he use to do too much to win a hockey game when he was younger and the Chiefs were not successful when he played there because of it as opposing team's game plan would try to shut down Witzel and then Chiefs top line would not play all that good.

Witzel has never had a bad season in his whole career, who could almost bet that every season that he will be in the top ten in scoring and will be leading his team in points. Witzel also isn't just an offensive threat, he is good at shut ting down other team's top line and is the best Pker on the Steelhawks. He is very important to the steelhawks and is a big reason why the steelhawks are in the Challenge cup Finals and are currently winning the series.

Witzel is a special player that every team looks to build a hockey club around as he helps Players around him get better and he also tries super hard to get better everyday even though he is maxed out in most major stats in the SHL. i see him being a strong player next season and has a really good chance to lead the league in scoring, only time will tell if he does so and Witzel may be the best player in the world at this current moment. Which is an impressive feat by anyone to be consider this good.

From Grinder to Superstar - The Joe McKeil Story

The History

When the North American hockey landscape first heard about Joe McKeil, the player the got to know was a pure Grinder. The young German had made quite a name for himself in Germany, but his offensive Skills were seen as limited and nobody expected him to ever become a significant point producer on a higher level, especially not in a league as good as the SHL. Accordingly, when he joined the NWJHL he dropped to the 3rd Round until the Prince George Firebirds, who had picked a pretty similar player the year before in David Winter, picked him up. It was with the Firebirds that McKeils offensive game suddenly started to pick up, on a weak team he was one of the few bright spots as he had to take over as 1st Line Center right away and was one of the few consistent point producers. Still, for many Scouts he was a good junior player with great leadership but not someone who had raw skill required to become a Scorer in the SHL. But when the Hamilton Steelhawks decided to take a fly on him with their 3rd Overall Pick in the S8-Draft, all that changed...

The Player

Today, McKeil is one of the most prolific and consistent Scorers in the game whose contributions are sometimes overlooked, as he plays with some bigger names like Martucci and Witzel, but who has proved to be incredibly valuable and reliable for his Steelhawks. McKeil possesses a great all-around skillset, he can skate, pass and score, has good puck-control and is not afraid to take the body and all that for 25 minutes a game, thanks to his great Endurance. In Season 8 he won the Ryan Jesster Award as the best Rookie in the SHL and he has been improving ever since, scoring at or over a point per game in each of the following seasons.

[Image: martin-louis-tampa-bay-lightning-playoff...390266.jpg]

The Playoffs

After a heartbreaking loss in the Finals a few seasons ago and after falling to the Chiefs in seven games in the Conference-finals last season, this year the Steelhawks were finally able to go all the way and take home their first ever Challenge Cup. And Joe McKeil was a big part of this despite "only" being 3rd on his team in Playoff-Scoring. He was the third piece to the tremendous first line of Brodie Witzel and Roberto Martucci, that finished the Playoffs well over a point per game and had one of the best +/- stats of all players in these Playoffs. And when McKeil went down with an injury in Game 4 of the Conference Finals Rematch against the Chiefs, his team responded by beating the Chiefs and finishing the series in the very next Game and even though he wasn't fully healed, McKeil returned for the finals and made his return noticed with a 4-point-night in Game 1. Just four Games later, the Steelhawks won the Cup.

Samu Viltonen - The Best Name in the SHL

Possessing one of the greatest names in SHL history, Samu Viltonen is a backup goaltender for the Hamilton Steelhawks. The Turku, Finland native plays a well-rounded game, excelling at nothing, but above-average in most departments. The potential for the 20-year-old goaltender, who catches right-handed, is readily apparent, but there are questions about his mental focus.

Viltonen relies heavily on his athleticism and is very capable of making flashy saves during a game. He has solid rebound control, above-average hand speed, and is fairly quick to react to deflections. Viltonen is also a fairly decent skater, and because of that, he tends to rush out to play the puck. Scouts like his 6'2" frame, but temper that by saying that Viltonen isn't very good at using his size to his advantage. He weighs in at a toned 194 pounds.

Taken one at a time, Viltonen's weaknesses are not particularly bad, but when combined, they paint a rough picture. As with most young players, his stamina is far from developed, so his already basic skills have a tendency to be exposed as the game gets into the third period. Viltonen is very weak on penalty shots, which again speaks to a lack of focus on the ice. He is also very poor at playing the puck with his stick and, as such, is prone to costly turnovers when the opponents play a dump-and-chase style.

As a young player, there is still plenty of room for growth, but most scouts have concerns about his dedication to the game. At the present time, it is unlikely that he will ever be anything more than a journeyman backup or an average NWJHL starter. Although he will probably never experience much individual success, wiith Hamilton's dramatic overtime victory over the Calgary Dragons to win the Challenge Cup last night, Viltonen will receive a championship ring.

Roman Schultz, still living the dream.

There was a time in the NWJHL that Roman Schultz wanted to go for being a first overall pick in the SHL. Unfortunatly due to his agent becoming a co-gm at Hartford he could no longer represent Schultz. In the end, he dropped out of the top 4 but straight into the laps of the Hamilton Steelhawks who were happy to be able to pick Roman up after other teams passing on him.

After being drafted, it was the beginning of a big Cinderella story for Schultz. Hamilton has lost some big names in the off season, goaltender Tom Corcoran, defenceman Kevin LeBacon, and Ronan O'Keeffe, mister I can play anywhere. With the loss of some big names there was a big void to fill for manager Joe McKeill. With the acquisition of Schultz in the draft they made sure they would have one gap less to fill. The defensive defenseman was ready to step into the line-up as a full time member of the Steelhawks.

The Hamilton Steelhawks were supposed to be rebuilding this year, atleast that was what all the newspapers were writing after the stars were gone. Stars gone or not, they decided to make that their motto for the season, getting rid of the stars. In an exciting play-off round Hamilton indeed got rid of the North Stars and the defending champions the Minnesota Chiefs.

Shutdown defenseman Roman Schultz played a big role in this years success which resulted in a championship in his rookie year.

In 50 regular season games, Schultz didn't miss a single one and averaged almost 17 minutes a game, lining up for 12 assists and having a plus minus of +17. With these stats he managed to outplay veterans Vyacheslav Onoprienko and Eoghan O'Donnell, both who have been with the Steelhawks for a few years. Big things are expected for Roman Schultz, will he be able to make the jump to the first line next year? I think he has it in him to play these vital minutes but with players like Daniel Carlsson, Matthew Ekblad and newcomers Chris Partlow and Logan Valentine he has a long path ahead of him.

Work hard Schultz, keep living the dream!
