Preseason Rankings:

New England Wolfpack
Toronto North Stars
Los Angeles Panthers
Hamilton Steelhawks
Texas Renegades
Calgary Dragons
Seattle Riot
West Kendall Platoon
Winnipeg Jets
Minnesota Chiefs
Manhattan Rage

Week 1 Power Rankings

1. Stars Toronto North Stars (+2)

The Stars come out of the gate becoming the only team to go 6 games and not suffer a loss in regulation! They have also scored the most goals for cementing their position as number one in the power rankings. The biggest question will be can they remain on top?

Players to watch:
Phil Schenn – Toronto’s leading goal scorer will need to continue putting pucks into the back of the net.
Mike Alto – While his save percentage is good he has an amazing 1.80 GAA and two shutouts in this early season.

2. Riot Seattle Riot (+6)

The earliest risers in the power rankings standings, the Riot are doing everything right this season. They have lost one game so far, and have looked really sharp in every game they have played. It is true they are relying on their biggest star to carry the team but that is why they have him.

Players to watch:
Chris McZehrl – He will be given every opportunity to succeed in Seattle and is an early candidate for the Mexico Award.
Snowden Manning – The Sophomore is having a break out start to this season 6 points in 6 games.

3. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (-1)

While the pack sit in 4th in general they have dominated in every game they played. The team is tied for second fewest goals against, and the third best goals for/against differential with the best power play in the league. They may sit fourth in the standings but they are performing like the third best team in the league.

Players to watch:
Carter O'Callahan – Apparently playing defense he leads his team in goals and points
Jermaine Tennyson – leads the league in save percentage and GAA.

4. Dragons Calgary Dragons (+ 3)

Everyone, myself included thought this team would rise and fall with Mike Verminski; instead the team is winning games by scoring goals, a lot of goals. Second highest scoring team in the league also owns the second highest goals against in the league, Calgary needs to find a balance.

Players to watch:
Kari Barkov – Is tied for the league lead in goal scoring.
Logan Valentine – Playing some of his best hockey at a point per game right now.

5. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard (-4)

Just barely get the nod above the Steelhawks as they have won one more game but tied in overall points. The Blizzard are not performing at the level expected of the champions, could it be a case of the cup hangover. Don’t worry too much they were in a similar position last year and bounced back.

Players to watch:
Lucas Smith – Is sitting in second in team scoring, expect a breakout week from the star player
Kyle Keenan – No goals yet? That will change and soon.

6. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks (-1)

The Hawks are performing a little lower then I originally expected, and I think a portion of that has to do with their big guns collecting points not goals. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Hawks have the biggest turn around next week as the big guns get going.

Players to watch:
Jordan Hall – 1 goal in 6 games way off pace for his typical performance, he will find his grove soon
Urijah Winnfield – So far a middle of the road start in save percentage and GAA. I will expect those numbers to get better with the improved team in front of him.

7. Chiefs Minnesota Chiefs (+4)

While I did not expect Minnesota to be in a playoff spot or having a good hold on one so early on; where they finished last year, just a few points shy of a playoff spot, this is not an unforeseen situation. The team is really doing a great job of playing a team game to keep themselves ahead of the bottom half of the East.

Players to watch:
Edwin Ask – He has played above average hockey with a weak team in front of him, he will be the reason the Chiefs make the playoffs.
Bradley WIngles – Unforeseen star in this early season sharing in the goal scoring lead.

8. Jets Winnipeg Jets (+2)

It is bad circumstance that has the Jets behind the Panthers in the standings, because as a team they have been the better team. They have scored more goals have a better goals for/against total. If they can keep up this kind of play they will move into a playoff spot knocking the suffering Panthers out.

Players to watch:
Jamers Both – Can you say rookie of the year? He is in the early talks for the award 7 points in 6 games.
Lance Uppercut - Sits at +2 with 8 points and 8 blocked shots, the guy is doing everything he can to help his team win.

9. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers (-6)

The biggest drop from the preseason, and there is no reason for it. They have played only one “top” team in the league so far yet they have not produced as expected. If they are going to make a push they need more from their top stars as a few of them have been practically invisible.

Players to watch:
Brandon Donini – 3 point in 6 games is way behind his usual pace, he has the ability to turn it around and I would be surprised if he doesn’t rally LA when he does.
Adam Kylrad – Not to be out done, last season’s leading scorer only has 2 goals for the first 6 games.

10. Rage Manhattan Rage (+2)

Wow didn’t expect to see this from the Rage. Not only have they won a couple of games, but practically every game they have been in they have been competitive. A large portion of it has to do with goaltending as they have been outshot nearly by a significant margin, but in the end they are doing what they have to do to win.

Players to watch:
Sergei Bobrovsky – A good save percentage, but a low GAA, he is doing everything he can the rest of the Rage need to step up.
Kein Monesti – Future offensive star is putting his bid for rookie of the year with 6 points, now he just needs to score.

11. Renegades Texas Renegdaes (-5)

Talk about a fall from grace; last season the Renegades lead the Western Conference during the regular season, this year they are trying to save face. It is hard to say what is really going wrong in Texas other than their goalies have not showed up this year. The same two players lead the team in points, they are scoring, just their goals against is much higher then what it was last season.

Players to watch:
Jordin FourFour – He needs to find the save level of play as last season his current 4.26 GAA will not do.
Lionel Byrde – Keeps making major strides as a player, he will soon join the top stars of the league a break out year could be upon us.

12. Platoon West Kendall Platoon (-3)

WHAT HAPPENED! This was a team that competed in the finals just two seasons ago! I had said that the Platoon took a step backwards this season, I didn’t expect it to be a fall on your face as you go down the stairs kind of step. The team has no offense (4 goals in 6 games) but decent defense. They will really need to turn the offense around if they are going to make their way back into the playoff picture.

Players to Watch:
Armin Brovalchuk – Leads the team in offense and is tied with an inactive defender for that lead 1 goal and 1 assist. He is the focal point of the team’s offense and needs to get it going.
C.J. James – Doing everything he can to help the team win, above average stats across the board, if he can keep it up the Platoon have a chance to turn the season around.

Week 1 Standings:
Stars
Riot
Wolfpack
Dragons
Blizzard
Steelhawks
Chiefs
Jets
Panthers
Rage
Renegades
Platoon

7 game winning streak, Weber-Nurmi by far the best pairing in the league, offence clicking. Edmonton 4 #1
