Draft Destinations

Chuck Goody is arguably one of the top defensive prospects in the entire upcoming SHL Draft class, maybe even the top prospect of the entire draft. While critics have discussed all season long that the 1st overall selection has underperformed playing for a struggled Regina team, others would argue he has been just as advertised.

Goody is playing a hard hitting physical game and has rarely been on the wrong end of those body jousting moments. His greatest strength is in his own end and yet the media always portrays his failures in terms of low offensive numbers. It’s not the pretty statistics Goody was ever interested in; in fact, one would argue his most imperative job is to limit such statistics (for opponents of course). Regina’s strongest enforcer will likely be regarded as a top prospect when the end of the season rolls around, so maybe it is time to start mapping out some potential destinations for the big brute.

Here are some teams that might take Goody:

Disclaimer: If a team does not own a first round pick, they have been left out of this article. Although it may seem cocky, Goody has assured that he will not fall outside of the first round by certain GMs in the SHL.

Wolfpack New England Wolfpack

New England seems like the most likely destination for Boston’s boy. It is well known that the Wolfpack like to acquire local talent and groom them into young stars. Goody has connections in management that could be cause for New England taking them as soon as possible. While the Wolfpack are ripe in young defenseman, they could still benefit from picking up 1 or 2 more to build for the future. This depth of young talent on the back end also offers Goody the proper time to grow with another season in the SMJHL.

New England owns 4 of the first 12 picks in the SHL draft. Having four first round picks makes the possibility that any top talent will end up in New England pretty strong. And, judging by some of the things being thrown around the league, Goody will likely be a lottery pick and New England will own at least one of those. There is a very good chance that Goody is wearing green before we know it.

Chiefs Minnesota Chiefs

Minnesota is in some trouble. Their best chance at a lottery pick would have been this season, but instead the rights to their own first round pick belong to New England. Minnesota does however still own Calgary’s first round selection and leaves them in the lottery for Goody.

Minnesota needs more defenseman. After acquiring Niklas Stryker, the defenseman became a winger to supplement the offensive struggles of the franchise. While Walter White continues to grow for the Chiefs on the back end, they could really use some help in their top 4. I think it would be fair to say that if Minnesota had an opportunity, Goody would be a pick they’d have to make.

Stars Toronto Stars

When the season began, most would have assumed that Toronto would be regretting trading their pick to New England by now. Instead, the Northstars have pushed themselves into a playoff spot and are competing to come out of the east. On the flipside, they own Texas’ first round draft selection and with the Renegades tough season, this pick could very well give them a top selection.

Toronto lacks the defensive talent it needs today. While they have had success this season on behalf of some excellent play by Adam Kylrad and Erik Lehner, they still need that big talent on the back end. With the acquisition of Riley Forsberg, they will be getting stronger up front and really make a defenseman their top priority with their first draft pick. Like New England, Goody has strong ties to the management team in Toronto and if he is available when their pick comes up, expect it to be a no brainer. Goody would immediately become Toronto’s top pairing guy.

Platoon West Kendall Platoon

West Kendall is another team that has a solid opportunity to acquire some talent in the first round. While West Kendall’s ownership of the Hamilton draft pick is not as strong an opportunity to grab Goody, their own pick could very well be one of those top draft selections. After a lack luster season competing in the weaker eastern conference, West Kendall found their way outside the playoff picture and closer to a lottery selection; where they might find Goody in their laps.

West Kendall does have some young defenseman, but the level of quality of those prospects is fairly low. Really, they need help in most aspects of their team going forward and will likely be looking to build on a “best-available” basis. Goody will be one of the best available for any team that has a first round selection, thus it wouldn’t be a surprise to see West Kendall take his name off the board.

Dragons Calgary Dragons

While Calgary is certainly not the most apt to have an opportunity to grab Goody, they do still have a chance. While they only own Manhattan’s first round draft pick, the assumption would be that this pick will fall somewhere in the middle or latter half of the first round. With that said, would they still take the defenseman if he fell that far?

Calgary is incredibly strong defensively, which has been proven with their run to the playoffs in a strong western conference. Between Valentine, Jalopski and the Latvian sensations, it doesn’t look like they will need help in front of Verminski any time soon. I would say that Calgary is actually the least likely organization to take Goody should he still be available at their selection. They have the defensive talent today to be confident going forward.

Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard

To most everyone’s surprise, Edmonton’s draft pick will be early in the upcoming draft. After an incredibly rare off-year, the franchise will be in the running for a pick in the top 5 as they still own their 1st round selection. Edmonton only has 2 selections in 5 rounds of draft, so they must be incredibly careful about how they pick players.

Edmonton’s biggest offseason void will be left by the departure of long-time star defenseman Teemu Nurmi. With Nurmi gone, there is a whole in the top 4 that could be open for a young defenseman. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Edmonton drafted Goody with the expectation that he fills that role. While Nurmi and Goody have significantly different styles of play, Goody’s projected growth is expected to reach somewhere near the success Nurmi had throughout his career. It wouldn’t be too much of a surprise to see Edmonton take Goody if he’s there.

Riot Seattle Riot

Seattle is back in the playoffs and trying to repeat last season’s championship run. While their success will undoubtedly make their first round draft selection a little bit more likely to be late, it doesn’t take them completely out of the running to pick up a future star.

Seattle has two strong, young defenseman in Bodnar and Peter Parker and the remainder of their back end worries are sured up by Dustin Rose’s development. They are also strong at forward with McZehrl, Merica and Manning. Now, having a little bit of everything means that drafting for Seattle is flexible. Would they take Goody? I’m sure they would. It is no secret that Merica and Goody have a solid friendship and the Riot were after longtime mentor of Goody, Nike Kickz, during last season’s free agency period. If Goody is around when Seattle has their selection, there would be little surprise if they took him.

The remainder of the teams in the league failed to keep their S20 first round selections. For that reason, it seems unlikely that they will have an opportunity to get the young, hard hitting defenseman with all kinds of potential. Of course, draft day is still a ways out and anything can happen in the trade market once the season is over. In fact, it’s quite possible that this upcoming draft will force draft pick movement all over the league because two 2nd round selections might be nearly as valuable as a lottery pick. On the other hand, you might see GMs become gun shy worrying that later round picks just still aren’t as trustworthy as 1st rounders.

It will be interesting to see where the SMJHL’s top players end up in this upcoming draft.

I don't appreciate being called a douchebag. So go ahead and talk about sim results, but watch your posts about me personally.

Talk to me on draft day.

This ranking is wrong, it doesn't say wherever Adkins goes.
