Overtime was ticking down as Keenan streaked up the ice. To his right: Miles Berger, only one defender was back with them. Keenan assessed the situation and passed the puck to Berger, who wasted no time in throwing it on net. FourFour slid over, but was too late. Berger's 14th goal of the season had made Edmonton 3-2 winners in overtime.

In the locker room, surprisingly few reporters went to Miles Berger, instead the buzz was around the assistman on the game winning goal, Kyle Keenan. Initially confused, Keenan wondered why he was getting all of the attention, then he realized...

As a player you like to block out most things outside of the game you are playing that day, after all, not doing so is a great way to get distracted. After the puck was delivered to him and the media questions began, a smile spread across Keenan's face, he knew why they were here.

Keenan thought back to Lucas Smith's jersey retirement not that long ago, the longest serving captain in team history, the team leader in every offensive statistic, three cups. The guy did it all, but now he no longer can make all those claims.

Yes, Keenan's assist on Berger's goal was the 245th of his Edmonton career, moving him ahead of Lucas Smith on the all-time boards (a 2nd period assist on Theo Kane's 18th of the season had put him in a tie with Smith). Keenan is still ranked third in scoring behind Smith and Jay McDonald but he now has his name recorded in the books as the leader in a very prominent category.

Keenan had this to say: "Lucas was a great player and a great teammate. No one deserves to have his jersey retired more, guy's gonna be in the hall in no time, everything he did on and off the ice was just so damn impressive. To say I'm now ahead of him in Edmonton history, even if it is only in one area, is just.... word's can't explain it."

Edmonton finishes out their season against Seattle tomorrow.
