- Shmyrbone - 09-15-2015 A Look into the Life of an SMJHL Player WRITE UP It was a picture perfect scene. One dim light emitting a soft glow, faintly lighting up the center of the nearly pristine ice. The boards are beat up with puck marks, and the ads are all but gone. The arena is quiet, and chillingly empty. Except for one person. The shot smacks against the crossbar, dinging across the quiet arena. The player who shot it bends over, and spits onto the ice. He places his stick under his stomach and breaths hot air, rolls of steam pouring off of him. He's been out for two hours since practice ended, but the way he was raised, you use any free ice time you get. He'll play until he's kicked off. He picks a second puck off the top of pile, not unlike his pattern for the past hour. Glaring at the single five dollar bill taped to the top of the net, he rifles the puck towards it. Inches. He picks another shot and this time aims for the top corner. It's two hard to shoot at money, he thinks to himself. Instead, I'll shoot for it. It's odd that he would be in this mood, after all, he got the call about moving from the 3rd to 2nd Line only a few days ago. According to the general managers recounts, Shmyr had been playing a poor statistical game, but had been a huge presence on the ice, both for his team, and as a threat to the other. His hard hitting, playmaking qualities may not have been what got him to the top in Germany, but it's working for him. Rounding off his frame of 6'2" and 198 lbs. is his heavy checking statistics. With 37 checks in 28 games for the Mammoths, Shmyr has been an intimidating figure for the better half of the season. Although the Mammoths haven't been particularly known for they're hitting, Shmyr has been showing he can be that type of player. Most people have scrutinized the young player, after he has posted only 2 points with a -15 rating and 14 PIM's. Some even say he is a liability to the team, claiming that his use of his body is improper, and that he should be trying to use it to beat his opposition with long strides. The natural born LW has been playing on offhand RW role so far this year, and is excited at the prospect of big power play and penalty killing minutes this year and next. Although he's a late bloomer, Shmyr hopes to continue with where he's going and hopefully make the top line in the near future. Trying to take on more leadership roles with the team, reports say Shmyr has organized multiple team-outings, including steak-nights, fan appreciation events, autograph signings, and even a team charity baseball game against the Colorado Rockies (which they lost 13-2). That game could have gone better, but luckily the team had Shmyr on their side, who was also a AAA baseball player that could have gone all the way if he hadn't chosen to play hockey over it. Shmyr had a walk-off home run, a double, and a triple on four at bats. The final point was posted in the game by forward Charlie Conway. INTERVIEW Reporters managed to get an interview with Shmyr after the game to see his thoughts on the SMJHL season so far and how he had performed in the game. Here's a few clips with TSN reporter Justin Davis now. Justin Davis: Congratulations on the home run tonight! Carson Shmyr: Thanks a lot, felt great, especially with the way I've been playing my real sport lately. JD: It has been a little down, hasn't it? CS: A little. JD: What could that be accounted too? CS: I've been playing weak defense, and just have been feeling crappy all week. JD: Right. Anyways, about the baseball game. How was it playing against the big leaguers tonight? CS: Harder then I could have imagined. My parents wanted me to play baseball because they thought one day I would make it to the bigs and make millions, but I've always loved hockey more. I didn't throw a baseball good when I was 3, but I could skate pretty good. JD: Three years old? Wow. When did you start playing organized baseball? CS: I would have been around six when I played for a tyke's team. I really sucked my first few years, until we bought one of the ball pitchers. I would spend an hour out in the back using that, then a couple more shooting pucks. JD: So your early life was a combined skill of baseball and hockey. CS: Yup. Life was busy. JD: Seems like it. Best of luck with the last few games of the season, and onto the playoffs after that. SCOUTING REPORT Name: Carson Shmyr Age : 18 Position: Forward Born: May 5th 1997 SMJHL Team: Colorado Mammoths Birthplace: Berlin, Germany Player Type: Play making power forward, strong skater, athletic, can score goals. Overall type: Playmaker Strengths: Skating, Strong, Passing Weakness: No defensive aspect Final Say: Could be a strong player in the SHL if used right. Needs training on his defense play, and needs to learn to how to not take bad penalties. Excels in his skating and passing, but can't perform in clutch situations to maximum capacity. Not uncommon in young players, seems to have a wild side, but has shown he can calm down and be a leader both on and off the ice. Good franchise man of the future for a rebuilding team. Draft Analysis: Given the talent in the upcoming draft, could go anywhere between mid second to early third depending on his regime upcoming to the draft. RELATIONS WITH OTHER PLAYERS A team wide NHL 15 Online Hockey League was started by the Mammoths lately, and Shmyr wasn't going to be one to miss out. Partnering with great junior player, Charlie Conway, the two took control of the SHL's rival league's Boston Bruins. In there first few days on the job the two made some, ahem, questionable trades. One included sending star defense Zdeno Chara to the Los Angeles Kings in return for Tyler Toffoli and a first round pick, claiming that they don't like Czech's, and that the team was in a rebuild. They followed that up by sending away left winger Milan Lucic to the Arizona Coyotes in return for Oliver Ekman-Larsson, a trade that some said was good because it replaced Chara, but bad because it left a hole on the wing. This was because Marchand had been traded for Calgary's 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th round pick for the next seven years. All in good fun, the teams play weekly matches against their own teammates (as well as some partners from other SMJHL teams such as Halifax and St. Louis). There is no prize at the end, but the league has a five dollar entry fee. Part of the reason Shmyr decided to partner with Conway is that the player helped him through the past few weeks with Lindgren (his room mate) away on some expedition. Conway and Shmyr did a few events together, signing autographs and other things after games, and quickly became friends. They hope to keep in touch through their inevitable professional careers. INTERVIEW WITH MAMMOTHS GM Over the weekend, a few questions were answered by Mammoths CO-GM D. Moushey. He seems to have big expectations for the team in the upcoming years. 1. How would you rate your team's performance as of late? (+ why) I'd say we're doing as expected, not great, but not terrible either. We have all new players and guys trying to gel on the rink and it's coming together slowly that's all. 2. What influenced you to move Shmyr from the 3rd to 2nd line? This increase in TPE and great build really helped make that decision easy, plus with the loss of Wong, there was a hole that needed to be filled. 3. A few rumors are saying that some players might be shipped out come the end of the year. Is that true? As of right now we don't really have a reason as to why we would be moving anyone out this season. It's almost a guarantee we get everyone back for next season, which should help us make a really strong push. We weren't expecting to win this season so there's no reason to send players out! 4. What do you have to say on Julian Lindgren? Reports say that he's been a bad sport as of late, and hasn't been at practices. Did anything influence his behavior? It's not for everyone, that's all I can really say. More than likely will be a FA at the end of the season or sooner, unless he starts showing up. 5. Who is up for being named for the leadership roles next year? That's tough! I really wanna see who sticks it out and who supports Colorado the most! It's pretty open right now. 6. What players are impressing you this year? Conway has done a helluva job as a brand new player and Shmyr has been a nice surprise this season also. Outside of that, Subban has been a great offensive defense,an and really the whole team is putting up points and doing a great job. 7. What players are disappointing you this year? I can't say any are, the only ones are inactive players, which isn't a surprise. Otherwise, were coming along nicely. 8. What are your goals for the team in the next few years? Four Star Cup baby!! FINAL WRITE-UP "A Look into the Life of an SMJHL Player" is an ongoing project created and developed by the Colorado Mammoths. It will feature in depth looks into the lives of multiple players on the Mammoths squad and eventually other teams in the league. Delivering a fresh face each week, the show will feature many a players, from all different backgrounds and cultures. This project is not only for the avid hockey fan, and many a persons may find it interesting, due to its worldly content. The show currently airs on three available channels (Fox Sports, NBC, and Mammoths TV). The Mammoths organization and management would like to take this opportunity to thank all the fans and supporters that have stuck with them through the years, and want them to know it gets better. Carson Shmyr is a developing young winger with the Mammoths who has a high risk high reward style of play. His life seems to be full of events, fun, and teamwork, as he traverses the ranks of professional hockey with Colorado. He hopes that one day, everyone will see him lacing up the skates for a pro hockey team, and assumes that day isn't to far away. He has three goals for the future; to play professional hockey, to be inducted into the SHL hall of fame, and to win a Challenge Cup. He says he knows the road isn't easy, and that he's not going to get there with out knocking the damn bill off the flippin' net. But hey, you know what they say. "Rome wasn't built in a day." His relations with team mates and the community are outstanding, and only continue to improve as he makes a name for himself in the hockey world. It wasn't that long ago that he was a little boy, with a blond comb over and blue eyes, running through the streets of Berlin, to some park or store. Only now, his shoes are skates, the streets are ice, and the destination is the Challenge Cup. Tune in next week for an extensive coverage of defense man Kristoffer Rudd as he becomes one of the top players on the blue line we've seen in juniors in a while. Who knows what will happen with his career, and where it will take him. All we know, is he's only going up. That's all folks.
