With the recent retirements of some league legends the speculation has run rampant as to which of these deserving players may make the S26 class. The SHL HOF voters, much like the Major League Baseball voters appear to be a very finicky lot. It is quite difficult to predict which way the voting winds will blow in any given season. So with that in mind I decided to take a look back at the Hall of Famers and see if there seems to be any patterns that we can see. There are 52 names in the SHL Hall of Fame. Of those 52, 39 of them were drafted to their SHL teams. So I decided to look into the draft statistics to see what interesting tidbits could be found. Draft position: Every off-season before the draft you see GMs scrambling to make trades to move up into the draft to get that guy they believe will be the next Hall of Famer. Is this a sound strategy? The numbers would suggest that perhaps it is not. The average draft position of the 39 Hall of Famers drafted is 15th. Maybe not quite the number you expected. A smart Gm can possibly identify if it's worthwhile to move up for a guy. Of the 39, 9 Hall of Famers were drafted in the top 5. Elias Armia and Ryan Jesster hold the distinction of being the only Hall of Famers drafted first overall. So if you're thinking of moving up to grab a guy more likely than not the number one pick isn't going to be that future Hall of Famer you're looking for. On the flipside were there some diamonds in the rough, some Tom Brady's of the SHL? Sure enough there are 3 guys that stand out as low round picks who made the Hall of Fame. Future Hall of Fame GM Nathan D'Angelo started out as the 45th pick in the inaugural SHL draft. The season 5 draft saw John McBride go to Winnipeg with the 48th pick. The biggest steal of the draft all time though would be Brandon Sawyer who went to Vancouver with the 66th pick in the season 5 draft. So Gms have to decide is it worth it to move up? Am I that guy who can pick a Hall of Famer or do I hope that keeping my picks will let me find my guy? And players out there it just goes to show you that anyone can have a hall of fame career regardless of where you've been drafted if you are willing to put in the work to do it. The seasons: You always hear people chirping about the greatest draft classes. Obviously the more recent classes won't have anyone in the Hall of Fame yet so it may take some time to flesh out if those classes rank up there with the truly great drafts of all time. That being said looking at the numbers there are two drafts that stand out as far as producing Hall of Famers. The season 5 class was a damn good class producing a total of 9 Hall of Famers. There is one class that can lay claim to being the best draft of all time and that is the inaugural season 1 class which boasts 10 Hall of Famers. Almost half of the total players come from these two drafts alone. By the numbers: S1-10, S2-4, S3-2, S4-1, S5-9, S6-4, S7-1, S8-2, S9-3, S10-1, and S11-2. Time will tell but the other classes have a long way to go to attain the status of seasons 1 and 5. The teams: Are some teams better at drafting Hall of Fame players? There is one team that stands above the others but there's not that big of a discrepancy to say that their Gms are way better than the other teams. 10 SHL teams have drafted Hall of Fame players. The team with the most? That would be Calgary having drafted 8 legends. Next in line are Winnipeg and Hamilton each drafting 6. The Platoon has 5 to their credit. The rest of the list would include Toronto and Edmonton with 3 a piece and 4 teams with 2 a piece, being Manhattan, Minnesota, LA and Seattle (as Vancouver). So Dragons players rejoice! If you get drafted to Calgary you would appear to have a head start in your future hall of fame career. The GMs: And finally we look at the Gms. Are some guys better at picking Hall of Famers? Well there are 2 guys that stand head and shoulders above all the other GMs. Leafs holds the all time lead having drafted 6 members of the SHL Hall of Fame. Close on his heels however is Nate who drafted 5. Now let the debate over who is the greatest GM begin. Does Leafs hold the edge based on his sheer longevity as a Gm over Nate? Leafs drafted 4 of his guys in S1, 1 in S5 and 1 in S11. Nate drafted 3 in S5 and 2 in S6. So what is your decision? We'll let the debate rage on in the comments. Conclusion: Do the numbers that were analyzed show any trends that can help us figure out who the future Hall of Famers are going to be? In the end I would say probably not all that much. It was fun however to take a look and see just where all these legends came from. Maybe however they will be of some use to someone. Maybe I should recreate and hold out for Winnipeg? :-? 1008 words - Allen - 01-03-2016 Fucken beauty.
