- GoodLeftUndone - 02-06-2016 I guess you could say my activity has returned  Benson Rumors Ignite While the Toronto North Stars sit nicely on top of the Eastern Conference standings, former first overall pick David Benson is still without a contract following this season. Contract talks between Benson's agent and Toronto's General Manager have been quiet to date. Signs clearly point that David Benson could be a free agent. It appears that during the pre-season Toronto was actively listening to offers regarding the winger's services but talks cooled down after Toronto enjoyed a nice start to the season. Something that Benson has been a contributor of, albeit in a small amount. Benson has been for the past two seasons now, a third line checker. Something the young winger hasn't been accustomed to in his SMJHL and SHL career. He's already set a career high in hits and could even do so in goals scored. All the while he's only taken one penalty making him a very effective player for the team. Yet Benson has seen virtually zero time on the Power Play and Penalty Kill this season proving how much depth Toronto has. Benson's Career Stats: Code: S24 (TOR) 52GP | 9G | 12A | 21P | -8 | 7 PIM | 112 Shots | 6 Hits | 8.04% While Benson does seem to be more on par with his rookie season, these aren't the expected statistics of a former number one overall pick. Part of that reason is his inability to establish himself over the top-end talent that is on Toronto's roster. If David Benson can stay on track with his current increased work ethic he could be a highly coveted free agent this offseason if Toronto is unable to secure his services. He could also be a great rental player for the playoffs if Toronto were to falter and fall out of a playoff spot which is highly unlikely. Rumors regarding Benson's future will only continue to heighten as the season draws closer to conclusion. Stay tuned as later on we will be "ranking" the likely destinations Benson could find himself next season.
