This is absolutely insane.

The geostrategic importance of Turkey cannot be overstated.

not like this sort of thing happened 25 years ago in Russia.
Anyhow, I'm happy this has happened, as I remember correctly, Turkey is a pretty stagnated country.

I'm extremely ignorant to the issues in Turkey, but it's disappointing to see its hit such a level that the military takes action. Hopefully this is positive for the citizens of the nation.

Anybody will more knowledge willing to provide context?

It's good that it's happening. It's not good that people are taking to the streets protesting the military and inciting violence against those who are trying to uphold democracy.

Soldiers and police clashing, Turkish Air Force just bombed the Turkish intelligence agency. sheit fam

Erdogan, the president of Turkey, has been trying to centralize the government in a position that was once seen as a figurehead rather than a position of actually import. He's been anti-Obama, pro-ISIS, and has tried to promote fundamental Islam within the country. Essentially, the military (which is backed by NATO, and vice versa) has attempted to take down the powers that be to try and restore the democratic process the country has slowly been shifting away from. Theres a lot more to it than that, considering Turkey shares a border with Syria. A civil war within Turkey would weaken the fight against ISIS on the Syrian border and would likely throw the Middle East into turmoil.

tl;dr military good. President bad.

Erdogan tried to demolish the secularism that the Military is sworn to protect.

- Allen - 07-15-2016

Army Commander and Special Forces Commander have not condoned the actions of the military perpetrating the coup. Conflicting reports right now.

Appreciate that.

Really hope this goes well for Turkey. Obviously you're going to get those attempts to undermine a still-young democracy so it's good to see the military taking action against those attempts in this case.

Yeah, normally peoples reactions to a military coup are that it is upsetting the democratically elected government.

In this cause, it's probably the best thing that can happen.
