Each draft we have prospects who get cold feet and decide to end their career short. In this article, we will cover 3 of those such players for the upcoming S30 SMJHL Draft.

Juan Carlos Martin Gutierrez

Juan Carlos Martin Gutierrez was one of the first prospects eligible to decide to declare for the draft, which he did a little over a month ago. At 6'1 and 215lbs Gutierrez was a large defenseman who one would expect to use his size to actually play defense. He was actually an offensive defenseman that had great puck handling and offensive skills. His endurance was always in question not only out on the ice, but also with his dedication to the league. Juan Carlos Martin Gutierrez retired from hockey on 20 July.

Magnus Samalkangas

Our next Fallen Angel hails from Trondheim, Norway. Magnus Samalkangas was never a highly touted prospect in this draft, but many scouts believed that he could be a potential 2C on many teams in the SMJHL. As a play-maker he was great at dishing out passes to his teammates, had good skating, puck-handling and face-offs, but was terrible in his own end. Who knows why Samalkangas dropped out of the draft. Word is he is currently in the North Sea working on an oil rig. If rumors are true, we could potentially see Samalkangas again in the future.

Thor Skarsgard

One of, if not the most highly touted prospect coming into this draft, Thor Skarsgard was a force to be reckoned with. This two-way defenseman was making many headlines around the world as the prospect to look out for in this draft. Seemingly every article was about him and the name Skarsgard was at the top of the scouting lists. Skarsgard was a puck moving, mobile defenseman that was great in his own end but you wouldn't see him lighting up the score sheets with points. Scouts and fans around the world were shocked to learn that he would be dropping out of the draft on 18 July. When asked about why he dropped out, Skarsgard said this.
"Was into it for the last couple days, but it's a bit boring on here. And figured I'd quit before some GM waste a draft pick on me."
We can now only dream of a world in which Thor Skarsgard plays in the SMJHL. Who knows what this kind of player could have done in the league.

Thats it for The Fallen Angels. Stay tuned for my next article detailing potential pickups for the #2 overall draft pick in the S30 SMJHL draft.
