After much deliberation… I am stepping down as co-General Manager of the Texas Renegades and leaving the site. Before I continue in what is going to be a long ass post I just wanted to say working with Allen has been awesome and nothing about this past season made me leave the site… I had made that decision months ago but Allen giving me co got my interested for a little while longer. I joined the site June 18th 2012, which is over four years on the site. It has meant a lot to me and I have tons of awesome memories plus have met amazing people who I regularly game with such as <a href='index.php?showuser=1770' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-13'>Allen</a> <a href='index.php?showuser=883' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-9'>ByrdeMan</a> <a href='index.php?showuser=2005' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-7'>CRUTCHFIELD</a>. Hell I even met @Deener and <a href='index.php?showuser=1077' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Kinsler</a> irl and had a blast. Overall my time on SHL has been awesome.

With that shit out of the way I’m going to talk about some fundamental flaws in the SHL and how the site became stagnant for me. Notably I will avoid talking about the update scale because I do not want the entire thread to go down that road.

My big problem with the site is the lack of stats to see the character you are creating. Let’s take a look at the attributes we have available to us and how these attributes are visible in sim.

Edit: so apparently I got what some attributes do wrong. However even if Strength is more valuable as a attribute in sim it still doesn't translate well visually into a specific stat, same with skating even if it is less useless. Apparently PH is a shot blocking stat which is cool for D-men but irrelevant for forwards and just makes defense harder to visualize.
The point is SHL needs more stats.

Tier 4 = Completely Useless
Fighting = Increasing your fighting does nothing. Famously Jackie Lee who had 92 fighting for almost his whole career…. never had a single career fight. We came out with an enforcer arch-type which is completely pointless because fighting does nothing!
Discipline = Okay… it does balance checking and limit PIMS in theory but people who never put points in Discipline regularly take almost no penalties. Most people say it is a waste of time.
Penalty Shot = Its penalty shot. Have we ever had someone have 99 penalty shot and see if they score a ton of penalty shots? Do we know if this impacts breakaways in the sim? If it does can we see a number of breakaway goals a player has without going through every goal pbp? Overall Limited to completely useless.
Tier 3 = General Improvements no Stats
Skating = Obviously Skating is seen as the most important stat in SHL however there is no “stat” for skating. It just “generally” makes you better.
Endurance = Same as skating. Generally improves you but you cannot really see it unless you go through every game to see if you drop off in the third period or something.
Puck Handling = Without give aways puck handling has no stat just another “improve this to make your guy do better”.
Tier 2 = Kind of visible
Strength = Strength is tied closely to faceoff percentage. I have 99 faceoff but am not winning as many faceoffs as other 99 faceoff guys because they have higher strength. Beyond that we do not really know if it makes you hits more efficient or if it helps break hits because we have no stat for that.
Defense = Defense is kind of visible through shot blocking but there are no take aways so it mainly only helps defenseman and two way forwards cannot use shot blocks as a metric as easily as d-men.
Tier 1 = Actually Visible
Checking = You get hits. It has a stat.
Face offs = You win faceoffs. You can see that. Though obviously only a center stat.
Passing = You can get assists.
Scoring = You can get goals.

You’re probably wondering what the point of this is. Well here it is. I’ll bring the update scale in briefly. When you have to work harder to improve your attributes you want to see results. However you really cannot see results in the SHL because of the nature of the sim. This isn’t ABOUT the update scale though this is about really trying to improve the SHL experience for people. Here are some solutions.

1) Use a version of the game that has GA/TA.
This should be a no brainer. It would make defensive guys have more to look at and also would help people see WHY they are putting points into something like Puck Handling. It would be a major asset to the league and desperately needs to be implemented. This helps offensive skilled guys, defensive forwards who now have a defensive stat to look at and gives d-men something other than shot blocks and fucking +/-!

2) Make Fighting Do Something
I do not know if this can be done in the sim but if there is an option to turn up fighting and see if it has some sort of moral impact we could have another whole character model on our site! We could run something like a “Fight Club” where a title belt is passed around based on who wins fights. It is simple and silly but would be awesome.

3) Using Mad Computer Skills to Get More Out of SimonT
I’m not a programmer but I imagine someone could in theory create a program that goes over the game pbps and can pull out information. Specifically how often hits are successful. Perhaps shots on target get some advanced corsi stats going. Also what kind of shots people are scoring with (for instances high puck handling is supposed to help you with tip ins, would be awesome to see how many tip ins people get). This would require some technical ability but if someone on here can do that SHL Management should pour SHL $$$ at them to pull it off. Would be amazing.

These changes might be possible and if they are the SHL should pursue them. It would give people a better picture of their player and create unique identities around the league. Honestly I just ran out of gimmicks. My first guy was a Defensive Dman back when we had take aways, that was awesome. We lost take aways I retired my dude. Daigle was 55 passing for the first half of his career but eventually I realized you can’t do that and expect to do anything. Charlyb’y is a faceoff specialist… but now he has that done what other interesting thing can I really do? Nothing. Just throw shit into everything and wait for my assists totals to increase.

Overall I do not find SHL a rewarding way to spend my time so I’m going to spend it on the SBA where they have infinitely more stats and I feel I can build a unique role player. Hope some of these changes can be made here.

Finally I won’t be retiring Charlyb’y and I may come on drunk to update if Allen guilts me into while playing CS:GO but otherwise I will not be an active member of the site anymore. Good luck Renegades

I don't think suspensions forum pays out like media tbh.

I'll take a crack at some of this.

1) Skating is not the most important attribute, in fact it can be a bit more damaging than some other very important attributes. It's that people in SHL have said skating was so important for so long, no one ever actually checked and realized that the simmers always used Strength as the most important, because it is. And that's what I've always told people and is the reason I've helped a lot of people be successful.

Similarly, Puck Handling is tangible. It's known as the Shot Blocking Attribute. It isn't a takeaway attribute, it's literally in the manual as: Higher chance of blocking a shot, and less chance to lose the puck when hit. It's not a takeaway attribute.

2) I could increase fighting, but the issue is, it's already really high. In comparison to everything else, fighting is the highest slider in the sim. If I increase it anymore, it'll literally be nothing but fights and we still may never have fights. It's just not something I can do anything about in sim, because it's huge and we don't want it to be something so important when not many people really focus on that and it could start taking a large amount of players out of the game for long periods of time.

3) I would love to have GA/TA back. But doing that destroys goalies, and I refuse to do that. If the next person to take over wants to do it, go for it. But I don't want to rob Peter to pay Paul, I want to have it consistent all the way around.

4) We had a Bojo stat thing for seeing how the hits mattered and all, it really just showed that the index was kind of right, the guy who hits people more is often the one with the most takeaways pretty much. So yes, hits matter more than we think, especially with the percentages these people play.

Overall, a lot of this seems like you just didn't do the right digging or didn't talk to the right people to actually get a full grasp of what the sim is outputting. It does give a good bit, it's just not a highly in depth simulation. That's just the compromise we've made. I'm sorry to see you leaving, as I do have great respect for you and I think you're a fun person to have around. But I understand the frustration and wish you the best.

I always heard endurance was the most important tbh, not skating

Have fun on SBA, I never was able to stay active there. Good luck with everything, famo
