- Baelor Swift - 02-13-2017
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() A new season is upon us and it is no secret that this will be an interesting one for the Minnesota Chiefs. A team that has been among the top in the league over the past few seasons, the high end talent that has filled this team’s roster is noticeably absent as we now have just three active veterans in Garbanzo, Andersson, and Pretty Flacko. With a number of fairly high profile retirements over the past couple seasons, free agency departures, and trades, it is clear that the Chiefs are headed in a new direction, one that will not be so reliant on trades and free agency but rather on developing talent through the draft. “If you look at any of the league’s highly successful teams, especially Calgary and New England right now, these teams have not forced moves, have not thrown around draft picks in exchange for rentals. These teams have built through the draft to become dominant forces. And that is what we are doing and will continue to do as we look to finally end what is now a twenty season Challenge Cup drought.†With these changes come a brand new batch of captains who will help lead the Chiefs through a rebuilding period. This leadership will be essential in maintaining cohesion, helping new players feel welcomed, and to do their best to help the team play to the absolute best of its ability. These three players are faced with no small task but we fully believe that they will be successful in their new roles and will help to show the rest of the league that the Minnesota Chiefs are a team with an exceptionally bright future, a team that has one of the best locker rooms in the league, and a team that should not be taken lightly. Without further ado, your Season 33 captains… Second Alternate Captain: Center Samee Iqbal
The second alternate captain for the Chiefs this season will be none other than playmaking center Samee Iqbal. Drafted eighth overall in Season 32, Iqbal had an exceptionally successful SMJHL career, winning two championships with the Kelowna Knights. Last season, he was among the top junior players, scoring 59 points and leading the league with 40 assists. Minnesota will be hoping his playmaking ability will translate to the SHL as he will get a shot on the first line with Lord Pretty Flacko, one of the league’s premier goal scorers. However, Samee Iqbal has also been a highly controversial player around the league and has often been the target of significant criticism as one of the most disliked members. The fact that he was voted as a captain by his teammates is surely an interesting case and will make the league wonder… Has Iqbal simply made a poor first impression throughout the league? Of course, his teammates certainly believe that to be the case as all eleven actives turned in ballots. He has been a strong locker room presence thus far and has worked hard to repair his reputation. Hopefully a leadership position will enable him to do so further. First Alternate Captain: Winger Terrance Nova
![]() Voted in as the Chiefs’ second alternate captain for Season 33 is Terrance Nova. Also a Season 32 Draftee, he was the team’s ninth overall selection and has developed into one of the best players out of his draft class. He enjoyed a fairly successful junior career, at least in terms of individual accomplishments, and has been rewarded with a chance to play on Minnesota’s top forward unit. As for his locker room presence, he has been an invaluable member from day one as he, along with Iqbal, have been two of the most active players on the team, both always looking for ways to help the team and their teammates succeed. Nova has also acted as a calming presence on Samee Iqbal, which has allowed both players to generate a lot of respect in their short time with the Chiefs. Nova will be expected to lead the team both on and off the ice and will bear significant responsibility for a rookie. But there are no doubts among the Chiefs organization that he will not only fulfill his responsibilities but exceed them. Captain: Goaltender Robert Andersson
![]() It is only fitting that a veteran lead a team full of youngsters and Andersson certainly fits the bill. Since entering the SHL in Season 27, he has established himself as one of the league’s elite goaltenders and as an integral part of the Chiefs organization. He’s been an important figure in the locker room for many seasons now and is currently the second longest tenured Chief after Alonzo Garbanzo. While many may question the decision to name a goaltender as captain, this decision makes perfect sense for the Minnesota Chiefs. He is one of the team’s best players, is well-respected in the locker room, and his awareness on the ice essentially makes him an extra defensive coach as he has tremendous command of the defensive zone. With a very young team in front of him, this will be Andersson’s chance to shoulder much responsibility for the Chiefs and his team’s success will largely depend on his ability to bail his teammates out. The rookies, especially Caelum and Hamalainen, will be relying on Andersson’s guidance all season long. Congratulations to Andersson, Nova, and Iqbal on being named captains! They will have plenty of responsibility this season as the leaders of a team that most are expecting to finish somewhere near the bottom of the standings and a team that is full of developing talent. However, the Chiefs organization has total confidence in these three players, along with the judgment of their teammates. We will be looking forward to an exciting Season 33 and a promising future with these players helping to lead the way! - Samsung virtual assistant - 02-13-2017 Rip my goalie career, i've just been cursed - XLeafer - 02-13-2017 Congrats Samee, SwegKingu, and sarmo! - sytarah - 02-13-2017 Quote:Originally posted by SwegKingu@Feb 13 2017, 07:31 AMOur goalie in kelowna had a letter when we won the cup. - sarmo - 02-13-2017 Quote:Originally posted by SwegKingu@Feb 13 2017, 06:31 AMSamee and I will make the refs come to you ![]() - Samsung virtual assistant - 02-13-2017 Quote:Originally posted by sarmo@Feb 13 2017, 04:05 PM Ya cause you both are underaged - sytarah - 02-13-2017 Pretty sure sarmos in his 20s tho - sarmo - 02-13-2017 Ya and pretty sure samee would be legal in sweden ![]() - Samsung virtual assistant - 02-13-2017 Ripperino smh these A's already Gang(banging) up on me - sarmo - 02-13-2017 Quote:Originally posted by SwegKingu@Feb 13 2017, 08:22 AMSamee coming for your C  - Jenny - 02-13-2017 ahhhh, 'grats, Samee! :-x also those other people ![]() - formx - 02-13-2017 Quote:Originally posted by SwegKingu@Feb 13 2017, 06:22 AM I gotchu - Samsung virtual assistant - 02-13-2017 Quote:Originally posted by formx@Feb 13 2017, 05:26 PM Halp - sytarah - 02-13-2017 Thanks guys!
