- Steelhead77 - 03-11-2017 ![]() ![]() ![]() Nicholas Pedersen and Randy Randleman celebrate one of their combined 51 goals this season. It was another 1st place finish for the defending Challenge Cup Champion Calgary Dragons in Season 33, marking their 3rd Division Championship in the last 4 seasons as they remain the team to beat in the strongest conference in the SHL. They've now made the playoffs 10 straight seasons and are seeking their 4th Cup in the last 7. They missed winning the President's Trophy by just 1 point, but that's a curse anyway so they were happy to let New England take home that honor. The Dragons finished with a 30-14-6 record after starting the season 0-6. After an early line up adjustment they went 30-8-6 over the next 44 games and scored 171 goals on the year. They finished #2 in Goals For, #2 in Shots Taken, #2 in Goals For/Goals Against, #1 in Powerplay, #2 in Shots Against, #1 in Shots For/Shots Against and #2 in league Face Off Percentage. Just another outstanding season by the Dragons. Management is very pleased with the team's performance as they head into the playoffs looking to defend their cup. On a team of high end superstars, it's often hard to stand out with individual performances as the scoring gets spread around and we all sacrifice big individual numbers and minutes for the sake of the team. It's what we're about in Calgary, but every once in a while something amazing happens and someone goes off. Well it happened twice this season with Randy Randleman and Nicholas Pedersen and we could not be happier for these two players, two of our Captains, both finishing in the top 6 in SHL Scoring while averaging under 25 minutes a game. Truly a great accomplishment in today's SHL which sees many of the top scorers playing on 1st and 3rd line, often on weaker teams while averaging over 28 minutes per game. Randleman and Pedersen's performance and ability to stand out on the deepest forward roster in the SHL was remarkable. Putting up 64 points and 59 points respectively, That marks the two best seasons by any Dragons forward outside of S10/S11. Randleman set the realism era Dragons scoring record at 64 points and Pedersen's 59 ranks him just behind defenseman Bubba Nuck's S30 season of 61 points. ![]() ![]() 1. Randy Randleman - S33: 26 Goals, 38 Assists, 64 Points, 116 Pims, 152 Hits, , 18PP, P/20: 1.09, 23.49 mpg 2. Nicholas Pedersen - S33: 25 Goals, 34 Assists, 59 Points, 39 Pims, 63 Hits, 16PP, P/20: 0.97, 24.27 mpg Playing on the same line the two studs really fed off each other along with linemate Shage Gagner who played the 2nd half of the season with them. Once Esa Anrikkanen was removed from the line (scrub) the line absolutely went off. Randleman scored 42 points in 28 games, Pedersen 38 points in 28 games and Gagner 26 points in 28 games. Not too shabby. Showing great chemistry this line is expected to lead the way in the post-season as well. ![]() ![]() No disrespect to Theo Kane, Pedro Sarantez, VLAD McZehrl or Chernika Banananov, among others who all put up amazing seasons, but we're here to tell you why Randleman should get consideration for S33 MVP. We realize Kane's record setting season probably makes him a shoe in, but hey we're gonna try and tell you why Randleman's season was better! Simply put... Minutes and Competition for points within his own team. Of the 5 players likely in consideration for MVP, Randleman plays on the deepest roster with 8 of the other 9 forwards being over 1260tpe. That's some stiff competition for points and minutes. We all know points get allotted to great players on weaker teams and it's harder to have a big season on a strong roster like Calgary's as evident by someone rarely being over 50 points on our roster. Since Kane is the odds on favorite, we'll focus on him compared to Randleman... Total Minutes Played: Theo Kane: 1415 - PTS: 72 Randy Randleman: 1174 - PTS: 64 Average Minutes Per Game: Theo Kane: 28.30 Randy Randleman: 23.49 That's a difference of 241 minutes and nearly 5 minutes per game. Kane only put up 8 more points in 241 more minutes of total ice time. If we look deeper into the numbers, 119 of Randleman's minutes were on the PK compared to 58 of Kane's on the PK. That puts even strength and powerplay minutes at 1357 for Kane and 1055 for Randleman, a 302 minute difference. Now we know someone will say Randy had more pims, yes he did and he got ejected a couple times, but it's only an 88 minutes difference with Kane, so still over 200 hundred more minutes for Kane on the ice at even strength and powerplay. Randleman also played on only 1 line at even strength, 1st line 40% ice. Kane played on 2 lines, 1st and 3rd with 60 % ice, along with linemates Sarantez and Koroviev. Outside of Kane's linemates he only had to compete with Scholz (1342tpe), Longford (672) and Salmon (530) for points among forwards as Edmonton really only played 2 lines this season. Only 1 forward outside of Kane's line (Scholz) has over 1000tpe. Naturally Kane would shine in points given that situation and he did. In terms of Hits, both of Kane's linemates have 40 checking, Kane has 76 checking so his hit totals were going to be huge as nobody else checks on his line but him. Randleman with only 8 less points and over 5 less minutes per game, had to compete with much better competition within his own roster for points among forwards. Outside of his own linemates Pedersen/Gagner, there's Esa Anrikkanen (1536tpe), Alex Mack (1465tpe), Schnitinfritz Jagr (1404tpe), Pierre-Luc Laflamme (1390tpe), Tommy Creller (1264tpe) and Joe Kurczewski (840tpe). That's Five 1260+tpe forwards to compete with for points. Randleman raised his game to not only one of the highest in the entire league but outshined all these great players on his own roster, some by over 30 points. He was a superstar among superstars. In terms of hits, Randleman threw 152 but had to compete with linemates Pedersen, 70 checking and Gagner 70 checking, so naturally Randy's hit totals while still great would be lower than Kane's. Randleman, for what it's worth, also had many Gordie Howe Hat Tricks this season, getting into 7 fights. He stuck up for his teammates while proving he's not only one of the best players in the league but also one of the toughest and most fearless. He's exactly what a hockey player is suppose to be. Dude is a animal. TLDR: Randleman played way less minutes (hundreds), way less % ice time, only played on 1 line, had MUCH tougher competition for points within his own team and scored only 8 less points than Theo Kane in over 200 less minutes, while helping his team finish 1st. All this being said, Kane's a great player and did set the points record, we respect him and his performance greatly, absolutely no disrespect meant and we do not want to diminish his achievement at all, it was excellent and he'll probably win MVP, he would be deserving... but when you look behind the numbers, in terms of a player who stood out and put up an exceptional season in a much tougher situation with considerably less minutes, Randy Randleman should get high consideration for League MVP as well. Hey, I have to try. ![]() Congrats to Randleman and Pedersen in their record setting seasons for the Dragons! ![]() Code: 1,200+ words - tweedlebrumm - 03-11-2017 Great write up Esa!
