Interview with one of the Baby Raptors - 39alaska39 - 07-09-2018

Yesterday we met with draft hopeful Alex Winters. Today we’re speaking to him again, after he was selected 4th round, 30th overall by the Colorado Raptors.

Let’s start by saying congratulations on getting drafted to the Colorado Raptors!
Thank you! It’s an honor to be drafted and it was truly a moment my family and I will never forget.

Had you spoken to the Raptors at all before the draft? And if so, had they given you any indication that they wanted to select you?
I had, what I felt like, was a great interview with the team, tried to be myself and make sure they knew what they would be getting if they drafted me. I wasn’t sure if they would select me, but I came out of the interview knowing that I would be thrilled to be a part of the team if I was lucky enough to get drafted.

What was it like for you to hear your name called, go up on the stage and put on the jersey for the first time?
It was truly amazing. Pulling on the famed blue and yellow Raptors jersey was a dream come true. The whole thing hasn’t truly set in for me yet, I’ve had a grin on my face since I first heard my name and I can’t tell you when I’m going to take off this jersey, if I ever do.

How has this evening been for you since you came off the stage?
A lot of pictures (laughs), I’m lucky I can’t stop smiling. I’ve had the chance to meet a couple of the other draft picks from Colorado: Philipp Winter, Ignatius Blunt and Nate Forsberg. We had to take a couple group pictures. I ran into a couple of my friends from the Czech Republic, was able to congratulate the Kovacs brothers on going in the first round, Marc [Palicka] for going to Detroit. I’m looking forward to playing against them, but also hopeful we can play together for our country in the future.

What’s next for you now that the draft is over?
Well I’m flying out to Colorado tomorrow. It’ll be great to get on the ice and show what I can do with my new teammates. I’m looking forward to playing with the guys, figuring out where I’m going to be living will also be fun. That first day on the ice will be the best though, first time you have the chance to prove the GM right that you were worth their pick, maybe build some chemistry for the seasons ahead. I just want to go out there and play my best.

I’m sure you’ve heard about how some players don’t get their gear in time for camp, are you worried about that?
Not quite, I actually have my gear here with me back in my hotel room! I didn’t want to risk not having it for camp. I’m pretty particular about my gear and I know not having it would throw me off. This is going to be a great experience.

Best of luck at camp this weak Alex, I hope you have a great time.
I’m looking forward to it, thank you.
