Taking a look at Kalevi Karhunen - Djenthallman - 12-20-2018

315 words/first article

Kalevi Karhunen is a two-way defenseman from Finland and a very interesting prospect for the upcoming SJHL draft. Finland

Karhunen is in a great physical shape, 6'3" feet and 230 lbs, one can call him a moving wall on skates, so players should avoid being hit by him, because it would be painful, to say the least. But he is not just a wall, he is a wall that skates well and there is still a lot of potential. However, he doesn't check very often.

He is a pretty balanced player and I must menition his passing abilities. Karhunen can deliver the puck anywhere he wants, creating good chances for a successful counterattack. Despite scoring nominally being his biggest weakness, he led the Wranglers in assists (34) in a regular season and was tied for second place in points (43) among defensemen in the entire league, which is again the product of his vision, offensive creativity and good passing. Karhunen is a must-have player for your team's first power play unit.

Coming back to his physical shape, Karhunen is able to eat up a lot of tough minutes, his average time on ice is the largest in the entire league both in regular season and postseason. When it comes to blocking shots, Karhunen is again among the best (66), good enough for being 6th in the overall table. Defensive positioning and puck handling are good too.

In summary, Karhunen is a great blue-liner who has both offensive and defensive presence. He can deliver an amazing assist to your team's forward as well as block an opponent's shot or force a turnover. I'd like to see him improving his checking just a bit to become a serious threat in the defensive zone. If you are looking for defenseman who can do everything, Karhunen is a very good option.
