Falcons win a tight one in overtime
Two of the top teams in the SMJHL met up tonight as we get a glimpse of two of the best offenses, and defenses. This game was a tight one through and through with a couple of solid performances by both netminders. The game started off solid defensively by both teams, and very disciplined too, with only one penalty in the first period. The teams almost got out of there without any goals going either way, but Hippo Passamus was able to put one away for the Falcons with just over a minute left in the period and the falcons went to the locker room with a 1 goal lead.
The whalers come out booming, with shot after shot in the 2nd period, and it finally pays off with a goal from Karazija halfway through the 2nd. Immediately after a frustrated Palicka takes a penalty and vancouver almost scores again to flip the lead, but detroit is able to get out of the period without giving up a 2nd one.
The final period is all detroit, as they outshoot the whalers 11-4, luckily for vancouver Stevens stands on his head and saves vancouver from losing this one, and this game is headed into overtime. The falcons dominate overtime again, the coach must have lit a fire under the players asses after the 2nd period because theyve looked like a full fledged shl team playing against a smjhl team. But again stevens makes a couple of incredible saves and this one goes into a shootout.

Despite losing that one Stevens really stood on his head and earns your first star, robinson also had a great game in net and got your second star, and well backdoor barnacle has a great name so thats number 3

When all is said and done there probably isn't anyone who would disagree with the two netminders, Stevens and Robinson, being the standouts in this tight game. Boasting incredible save percentages of 96,7% and 95,7% respectively show just how much they managed to get into the offenses heads. When the shootout was over with Stevens was awarded the first star and Robinson the second. If I were to nitpick however, I would argue for Robinson being the more deserving of that number one spot seeing as how he stopped all three attempts on the shootout and finally clenching the win for the Falcons.

Comment #2The Whalers' downfall: A Cold Power Play?
Looking at just how tight this affair ended up being, one cannot ignore the fact that the Whalers failed to convert on four different power plays. Even though you can't know how the rest of the game would have unfolded with a power play goal in the first or second period, it certainly would have opened up the play and allowed for further opportunities. The majority of the time on these four chances was instead spend on icing the puck and shockingly low - considering the talent on this team - shot counts for a power play unit. Knowing how they've performed in other games one can only assume that this performance was a one-off, otherwise I'd say it's a cause of concern for the Vancouver coaching staff.

Not to downplay the fantastic goalie battle that happened this game, Tauras Karazija had a very steady game. Karazija is the 2nd pairing LD of the Vancouver Whalers and played 22:56 minutes in the game with around 3:00 minutes of PP time, good for 2nd place behind the first pairing LD; Barret McCarthy. During that time he scored the lone goal for the Whalers taking a missed deflection by Backdoor Barnacle of the boards and burying it for his 5th of the season. He registered 4 shots on the goalie and completed 35 passes and intercepted 22 passes through out the game.

1st star - Casimir Stevens
- while both goalies performed admirably in this one I have to give the nod to the Whalers netminder. Outshot by a margin of 30-23 Casimir was truly the difference maker in this one. This was most apparent in the 3rd period when the Falcon's out shot the Whalers by a margin of 11-4 and failed to score the go ahead goal. 2nd star - Hippo Passamus
- Despite playing for the losing side Hippo was easily the most dangerous player on the ice. The lone goal scorer for the Falcons he had the game on his stick multiple times as he fired an insane team leading 6 shots on goal. Sadly Casimir Stevens had other plans.3rd star - Cedric Robinson
- this one truly was the battle of the goalies as both netminders finished with a save percentage well above 0.950. While he wasn't able to go home with the win, he is more than deserving of my third star award.

Let's take a look at some marquee performances from some rookies who aren't used to being put in the spotlight:
Jeremy Chen: -1 rating, 2 hits, 3 shot blocks, 21 minutes played - That's a big stat line for Jeremy Chen, the young pure defenseman out of Canada. Asking for 21 minutes from a young guy like him is a tall order, and Chen really delivered when he could. The -1 rating is not a "problem" by any means, in my humble opinion; rather, he did all he could from his position. He's not supposed to be the guy who's scoring. The rest of his line should be helping him out. Kalvins Zvejnieks - 1 shot, 2 hits, 17/29 faceoffs, 22 minutes played - Zvejnieks, the 6'4 power forward from Latvia, hasn't been scoring that much this season (8 points through 17 games), but he's really come into his own around the faceoff circle. This game, and a few other good ones like it, put him over 50% for the year, which isn't too common amongst rookies. Again, a lot of minutes and a lot of smash-mouth hockey from the big man. Nicely done.Comment 2: Who Blew It?
I've managed to find another tight game where it's tough to pick out one person who really blew this game for their team. In fact, the guy I'm going to pick was actually on the winning team - and that's Hippo Passamus. He had an amazing opportunity with just 2 minutes left in the game to close it out, and he couldn't do anything with it:

Cedric Robinson has been THE guy for Detroit all season - they haven't started their backup at all yet. He's been solid, and the Falcons have been too - his record is [obviously] 12-5-0. He really stepped up in this game during the shootout - it's is tough for anybody to stop 3 in a row. The Whalers really took it easy on him, all things considered. They only put up FOUR shots in the 3rd period! They got unlucky that they didn't lull Cedric to sleep!
Casimir Stevens played his heart out, and it's unfortunate that he had to take the loss in this one. He faced 30 shots (including the 2 SO shots), which is well above the average of 22.13 shots he faces per game. That sort of fatigue could have really played a factor in the shootout. The defense needs to do a better job of bailing him out, especially since he stopped 25 consecutive shots from the end of the 1st when Possamus scored (yes, he still blew it for a little there) to the shootout goal!

Hot goaltender keeps Whalers in it
While the Detroit Falcons dominated the play for the final period, and the overtime they ran into a hot goaltender for the Whalers in Casmir Stevens, who ended up getting the first star of the game rightfully so. This game had no business going into a shootout with the Whalers hanging on during the 3rd for dear life. Their play didn't exactly inspire much hope in the overtime frame, but maybe that was the game plan...to just weather the storm for a chance to steal the game in the shootout. The Whalers ended up coming out of the game short of a win after failing to redeem their selves with not scoring a single goal in the shootout. The Whalers will have to buy their goaltender Stevens dinner after this one for his effort.

With 2 goalies like that you might as well have flipped a coin! Vancouver had their chances though with 4 power plays they just couldn't convert on any of them. It couldn't have helped that Detroit was dominating in the Faceoff circle tonight winning 51 to Vancouver's 35 and maintaining solid possession. With all that possession we could see that Detroit had more chances through the final period and into overtime. Kudos to Vancouver defence though who, without regard for their own health, blocked 8 shots on the night to Detroit's 5 showing some real dedication to their defensive game.

Detroit dominated the face offs this game winning 51/86 face offs for a 59% win rate compared to Vancouver's 35/86 for a 41% win rate. It wasn't just one person dominating for Detroit either on the dot all 3 of Detroit's centers had great win rates with Kalvins Zvejnieks going 17/29, Mikael Mlynarczyk 16/25 and Raino Kyllonen 14/25. On the Vancouver side Shaquille Derisraka was alright going 11/22 along with Rudy Mentz going 5/11 but Andy Kerr and Borromini Cannellini are where most of the teams struggles on the dot occurred with both going 8/19

Although Detroit squeaked out the win in this game in a shootout and controlled the play for most of it they had a lot of undisciplined penalties which they need to clean up for future games so they can dominate the play more. In this game they have 2 hooking penalties, a holding penalty and a tripping penalty. Fortunately for the Falcons it did not have a large impact on the game as their penalty kill stepped up gong 4/4 on the night stuffing the Whalers who must regret not getting at least 1 goal on all their power plays to potentially avoid the shootout.

The 2 stars of the game were clearly the respective goalies as they both had excellent games with Casimir Stevens saving 29/30 for a 0.967 save % and Cedric Robinson of Detroit with 22 stops out of 23 shots for a 0.957 save %. Backdoor Barnacle got third star honors for his game tieing assist, however one player who did not show up on the 3 stars or the score sheet but was a big force during this game was David Fantobens for Detroit. Fantobens was everything in this game peppering the goalie with shots for a game leading 6 shots along with 2 hits and a +1 finish.

A rarely low score between two teams that normally easily find the net, but also have difficulties preventing goals. At this writing Vancouver Whalers leads the league with 93 goals, Detroit Falcons is 4th with 90 goals. On the other side Vancouver is 3rd with goals against (90) while Detroit is 5th (81). In the previous two meetups the teams combined for a total of 15 goals (Vancouver 8, Detroit 7). Both goalies played a huge game. Casimir Stevens (Vancouver) stopped 29 shots of the 30 he faced. Cedric Robinsin also allowed only one goal. He faced 23 shots. Leaders in this game with most missed shots: David Fontobens (6), Hippo Passamus (5).

Russian highlight reel: In tonight’s Russian highlight reel, we take a look at Vancouver’s two Russians, Shaquille Derisraka and Egor Kucherov, both of whom had great physical games today.
In the true spirit of Team Russia, the two combined for 5 big hits, four of which caused the targets to lose the puck.
For Derisraka, this is nothing new - the junior senddown is currently third in the league in hits, with 84. For Kucherov, however, this game comes as a bit of a happy surprise, as the young rookie has only 18 hits through 27. His play shines more in his defensive mentality than in throwing around his body, as he also has 25 shot blocks so far this season on Vancouver’s second defensive line. Let’s watch these kids work their magic tonight, showcasing the type of bruising, physical hockey they teach in their motherland.

Unfortunately, their big play tonight, including a 50% FO% for Derisraka and a shot block for Kucherov, was not enough to help carry their team, as Vancouver would fall 2-1 to Detroit in this game.
