Day 1 Recap - S48 SMJHL Prospects Showcase - Whikadoodle - 06-06-2019

The SMJHL Prospects Showcase is in full swing as a crop of young, motivated hockey players from all around the country gather in Regina, Saskatchewan to prove themselves to the plethora of SMJHL scouts in attendance. The Prospects Showcase is considered the first true stepping stone to the SHL, and always excites and entertains as it gives us an opportunity to get a glimpse into the future.

This past day was a short day of action to give ample time for opening ceremonies to take place. The four teams have primarily stuck to their original pairings, with the Blazers facing the the Wranglers and the Stingrays lining up opposite the Vipers.

WRANGLERS DEMONSTRATE OFFENSIVE PROWESS IN SHELLACKING OF BLAZERS

The top headline heading into day 2 of the Prospects Showcase is the offensive dominance of the Wranglers as a whole. This team is averaging just shy of a goal per game more than the league average, and no player has failed to contribute to that effort. Forward Mike Richard leads all prospects with nine points in five games, and teammate powerplay-specialist Skao Anazibf has potted an incredible six goals in that same span, with two coming on the man advantage. Netminder Nolan McMahon has dazzled early, posting a showcase-leading. 867 save percentage.

The Blazers have yet to win a game in regulation, but have taken two games to victory in extra minutes. Forward Jean-Francois Mayer has been the clear standout on this team, tallying seven points including an impressive shorthanded goal that wowed the crowd. Though he has struggled to will his team to victory, defenseman Noah Andros has shown dedication and commitment by sacrificing his body nine times for the victory effort.

The Blazers and Wranglers tussle once more this afternoon before they begin to take on the remaining teams in the showcase. It will be interesting to see if the Wranglers can keep up the offensive effort and whether or not another Blazer will rise to the occasion and make a name for themselves this tournament.

STINGRAYS KEEP FINDING WAYS TO WIN; VIPERS LOOKING FOR ANSWERS

The Stingrays are 3-1-0, but they have taken on a chaotic process to attain a winning record. The Rays have pulled out both an OT and shootout win in their four games, and have Sterling Slaughter to thank for two impressive performances. The Stingrays have been abysmal on special teams, which is a shame because they find themselves a man down much more often than they find themselves a man up. However, the Rays, on the backs of Slaughter and Martin Kakko continue to find ways to win.

The Vipers are winless in four, and the issues on the team are crystal clear: they can't find the back of the net to save their lives. The Draft-eligible prospects have only four goals in four games, and the team as a whole is only getting pucks to the net twelve times per tilt. To further complicate issues, their save percentage is. 800 on a showcase-best 12.5 shots against per game. The Vipers are defending extraordinarily well, but need their goalie to stand tall if they wish to have a chance at the trophy.

Today's Games

The Blazers will take on the Wranglers once more, before turning their focus against the Vipers twice and the Stingrays a whopping three times. The Wranglers will move on from the Blazers to shinny against the Vipers twice and the Stingrays three times.

The game of the day will be this afternoon's match-up between the Stingrays and the Blazers. Whoever emerges victorious from that matchup will be the clear favorite to go on and lift the trophy at the end of this exciting, star studded showcase.

Let's go Wranglers. Hoping I can pot a couple though, I've been watching the rest of the team dominate the scoreboard.
