SMJHL prospects to draft and stash:
Want to get a leg up on them good young players in the juniors? Hockey News looks at the prospects to target currently playing in the SMJHL.This is an easy answer for me: Olivier Cloutier. It is a bit of a surprise to me that Cloutier is not getting called up to Tampa Bay after solid SMJHL seasons and a great draft pedigree. Tampa did give Olivier a taste of the SHL in the preseason, and Cloutier responded with a solid 10 points while barely playing 10 minutes a game (a bit surprising that they chose to give Matt Kholin top line preseason minutes after drafting him later in the SHL draft). This is only a small glimpse of what Olivier will bring at the SHL level. Last season, Cloutier was 12th in the SMJHL in total points for all skaters, and should only improve on that mark. In addition, Olivier should return as captain of the Armada, showing that Olivier can be looked to for direction and guidance from the rest of the team. Olivier is strong on the puck, often moving bigger men wherever Olivier wants, and although Olivier is undersized he is able to take over and dominate like few other players in the SMJHL. Whether Olivier is tying guys up in the corner in a puck battle or hitting the puck in for one of his numerous goals, Cloutier knows how to get what he wants. I think it would be quite smart for some fantasy team to grab Olivier in anticipation of his SHL call up so that they can look like a genius when he turns into a SHL superstar. @Jenny

- Drafted 10th overall by Los Angeles Panthers in S46
- Projection: 1st line
- Strengths: Scoring, Skating, Puck Handling
The Los Angeles Panthers are in a heavy rebuilt. Borromini already playing on the second line and first line powerplay unit, collecting 12 goals and 17 assists, 29 points during preseason.
Matt Kholin @Kalakar
- Drafted 14th overall by Tampa Bay Barracudas in S46
- Projection: 1st line
- Strengths: Passing, Puck Handling, Skating
Already playing on the first line for the Tampa Bay during preseason, collected the most points among all rookies, 14 goals and 27 assist.
Gordie Boomhover @gordieboom
- Drafted 12th overall by New England Wolfpack in S46
- Projection: 1st/2nd line
- Strengths: Passing, Puck Handling, Defense
Boomhover already playing on the second line for the New England Wolfpack, but their first line center will retire at the end of this season, collected 8 goals and 21 assists, 29 points during preseason.

Bold SHL predictions:
This article discusses some of our boldest predictions about the upcoming S48 season.
With the crazy offseason we just had, the one thing that is on everyones mind and that got everyone talking was the punishment that got handed to the Minnesota Chiefs.
I am pretty sure no one needs a reminder to know what happened. In brief, Daco, who was the Minnesota Chiefs Assistant GM for about a minute made an article targetting upcoming RFAs and how they could potentially impact the Chiefs roster next season and seasons to come. Instant outlash occured as everyone knew that Daco had crossed a line that he should have never gotten close to, the tampering line.
The Head Office took some time and gave out a sever punishment that looked like this

The Minnesota Chiefs will be issued the standard tampering punishment which is as follows:
1. A loss of three first-round picks.
2. A 10 million dollar team fine.
3. Minnesota will not be allowed to sign free agents for the duration of S48.
4. Daco’s player will be suspended during his first official season with Minnesota--normally the suspension is immediate, however since Daco is still playing Juniors, SHL HO did not want to punish an uninvolved SMJHL team. As such, the suspension will be delayed until Daco’s first season with Minnesota.
As always, the Minnesota Chiefs reserve the right to appeal this punishment if they so choose.
An obvious choice was taken by the Minnesota Chiefs as they decided to appeal the decision. Daco had gone inactive after the punishment was made public and I personally believe that had to alter some opinions in the Head Office room when deciding what the right Punishment would be for the Chiefs organization.
After some more talks, the official punishment was given out.

This had some serious repercussions to the Chiefs as a couple of their players decided to leave in Free Agency, they also lose out on 10mil to sign the upcoming Free Agency class (well the one that just passed) and what I think is the most important out of them all, the removal of their 1st round pick in the S48 Draft which is a 3rd Overall pick.
They lost out on some of their current players, didnt have enough money to add free agents. They also made themselves look like a bad destination because of the management issues caused by Daco and losing out on a top end talent prospect for the future. With all this happening, I personally believe that a bold prediction would be....

Hits
Viktor Marius
- @kareyMarius had a solid pre-season playing second line center for the Buffalo Stampede. He finished first in the SHL in hits during that span with 228. He finished third on his team with 42 points, 18 of those goals. With his great offensive output and ability to block shots as well, he is in the running for one of the top picks in every fantasy group and should be one of the earliest forwards off the board.
Mike Izzy
- @Right behind Marius is none other than Calgary’s star center, Mike Izzy. He finished up pre-season with 223 hits, just five behind Marius. Mike has been a force to be reckoned with for quite some time now and this season should be no different. He finished first in points for the Dragons with 64, which placed him third amongst the league leaders. Mike Izzy is the consensus number one forward for fantasy this season.
Lil Manius
- @BonkFollowing in the footsteps of Big Manius, Lil Manius likes to throw that body around when he’s on the ice. He finished with 213 hits this pre-season, 15 behind Marius. With 29 goals and 57 points in his 50 pre-season games, the first line left-winger is looking to provide excellent fantasy numbers for his owners alongside Jason Visser and Crossfit McJesus.
Blocked Shots
Zander Rhys
- @ThePandavaIf you are looking for the best shot blocker during the SHL pre-season, look no further than Toronto’s Zander Rhys. He blocked a league leading 97 shots with just under 21 minutes of ice-time per game. Although he is not known for his offensive abilities, Rhys puts up very solid numbers which makes him a viable option in later rounds for fantasy leagues.
Troy McClure III
- @Troy_McClure03McClure III had a great pre-season for the Winnipeg Jets alongside Gary Grease. He was second in blocked shots with 91, 6 behind Rhys. Unlike Rhys, McClure III does get some power play time, so look for his offensive numbers to be a bit better than Rhys in that department. Depending on how pre-season translates to the regular season, McClure III could be a very good sleeper pick in many leagues.
Fredrich Koenig
- @teztifyKoenig finished pre-season with 89 blocked shots, 2 behind McClure III and 8 behind Rhys. Koenig should be the defenseman that you want on your fantasy team. Compared to the other two players, Koenig is miles ahead when it comes to offensive production. Mix that in with a solid amount of hits and blocked shots and you got yourself one of the best fantasy defensemen in the league.

Tough Guys and Enforcers:
Here we breakdown the hard hitters and league tough guys to target on draft day.For the breakdown of the toughest players in the SHL, we will look at the top players from four different statistics. You should adjust your fantasy pick with how much point your league gave to each of these events. The four statistics are hits, penalty minutes, number of fights and the number of fights won. During the S48 preseason, three players had more than 200 hits. Those players are Viktor Marius (228), Mike Izzy (223) and Lil Manius (213). On the penalty minutes side, Ti-Guy Emond came out on top with 86 minutes. Tigole Bitties (82) and Mike Izzy (80), again, complete the top three. Harvey Danger led the league in total number of fights with 7. Ensio Kalju and Mikkel Haugen followed with 6 fights each. Only two players ended up winning 3 of their fights, Maximilian Egger and Martijn Westbroek are those players. You should take note that the only player that came out twice in our discussion is Mike Izzy.

With the upcoming S48 SHL season, its easy to pick the obvious things. Everyone has a general idea for the standings or who will win the cup. Those aren’t as fun. Here, I have some bold predictions for the league this season. Sure, they may not happen, but that’s why they’re BOLD.
First, The San Francisco Pride will make the Challenge Cup finals. I know that’s bold, but the Pride have been steadily increasing their fire power and it looks like this could be the season that STHS smiles upon them. Sure, a lot of people have them 5th in the West behind New Orleans, Texas, Edmonton, and Calgary, but they boast a fantastic defense that can the job done.
Second, The Manhattan Rage will make the Challenge Cup finals. Buffalo this, West Kendall that. I thought about going with Chicago, but this feels a little more bold. Manhattan has a fantastic GM in JY, and their defense is also becoming one of the best top to bottom corps in the league. If Luke and Co start scoring some goals up front, look out.
I don’t think both of these will happen, but I think there’s a chance we see one or the other. (205)

This is my list of the top SHL season 48 sleepers and undervalued players who are second guessed when they should not be or being picked later when they should be priority top picks and can be taken advantage of by owners in the mid to late stages of drafts.
Bobby Watson, LW, Minnesota Chiefs @Bobby Watson
Bobby Watson was a priority top pick last season but was mediocre and kind of a flop for owners with high hopes for him. As a result of that, people are wary of spending a pick on him too early. This is a good chance for some looking for low risk high reward. The Chiefs look to be set on running their offense through Watson - leading the preseason in shots and with Nova regressing hard, Watson will be the checker of a high-minutes top line and this is why he's my top mid to late round sleeper.
Fredrich Koenig, D, Chicago Syndicate @teztify
Fredrich Koenig will be the top defenseman in Chicago this season, his minutes will increase because of a Sami Owens being past his prime. Koenig is really skilled and will see top minutes and maybe even start later on in the season. He's an underrated two way defenseman on a team that will let his skills thrive and with how Chicago played him in the preseason, seems like he has the green light to do what he wants. With that being said, he's on a type of team that will showcase both his offense and defense - he has a lot of that and is worth a late round pick up.

What young players in the SHL should you draft and stash? here we target those players who will one day turn into draft day stars.While their numbers aren't fantastic yet, Dominic Montgomery and Leopold Lockhart are the defensive pair to watch on the San Francisco Pride. Lockhart had a less than stellar rookie showing last season, but the Pride are hoping that pairing him with Montgomery this season will bring out the best in both players, and that they'll continue to develop together and become an unstoppable force for the team in the future. Playing on the third pair and averaging about 15 minutes a game, Lockgomery put up a combined total of 21 points, a number that will certainly only increase in the future, especially if Lockhart ever gets a shot on the Power Play, as that's where he put up most of his points in juniors. They had 94 hits between the two of them, with Lockhart showing a slightly more physical game, but again, that's a number that will only improve as the pair grows. Montgomery had the edge on shots blocked and together they blocked 115 shots in preseason. Looking forward to seeing how these two continue to perform together. Considering their off-ice chemistry, they should be quite an entertaining pair on ice. We can only hope that translates. In the meantime, keep these two on your radar for future fantasy draft consideration.

Lil Manious is a solid player, and would go high in any fantasy league. However, his stock right now is high, VERY high! After getting close to points per game last season, ultimately ending with 45 points and the 29th ranking in points overall, Manious had an absolutely dominant preseason performance. He would be 5th in scoring, 3rd in hits, and 6th among forwards in ice time. No doubt about it, the role of Lil Manious is opening up, and he is going to be worth a high pick in this draft. Many people might scoff at you taking him in the first or second round, but he would be well worth it.
Another sleeper is Ostap Maksimov. On paper, this one might seem odd, but there is real potential here. In the preseason, it seems clear that Maksimov has supplanted Driftwood as the true top defenseman on the team. Considering Driftwood led the team with 53 points last season, there is potential for a big breakout season in this new role

In the preseason James managed to pick up 4 goals and 11 assists in 50 games, as the season progresses he looks to continue racking up TPE and is bound to be a top winger for the going forward for many seasons to come.@kit of the Chicago
had a marvelous preseason as he produced 14 goals and 13 assists picking up 27 points. All this while playing on Chicago's third line alongside @rieksts and fellow rookie @JNH . If Kit continues to work hard and continue what he is capable of then Kit will be a prominent player in the SHL sooner rather than later.@slothfacekilla Jimmy Slothface of the New Orleans
picked up 31 points in the preseason by scoring 17 goals and picking up 14 assists for S48. Like fellow rookie Kit, he is also playing on the third line as well. These are some young players in the SHL that should be drafted and stashed as they have high potential to be stars soon in the SHL.

Top 3 Face-off Targets for Fantasy Drafts
1. Robert Phelps (@DrunkenTeddy)
Phelps has been a stud in the league for years, but is also one of the best face-off men in the league. Phelps won more than half (58.1%) in the preseason and should keep his stellar number up.
2. Mikhail Lokitonov (@ml002)
Star center Mikhail Lokitonov will not only score you a lot of points, but he also wins face-offs. Loki has won 57.47% of his faceoffs after the preseason and is known across the league as a faceoff ace.
3. Dermot Lavelle (@White Cornerback)
Yet another scoring center cracks the list in Buffalo star Dermot Lavelle, who's won 57.44% of his faceoffs. He'll get you a lot of points in fantasy both scoring and faceoff wise.
2 Players Not To Target
Alexander Selich (@Tomen)
Selich is a very promising young center who's getting third line time with a very good Stampede team, but on 786 faceoffs taken, Selich has only won 34.51%. He needs to get his numbers up.
Kire Yelkrab (@emBARK)
The young Chiefs center had an abysmal preseason faceoffs wise, only winning 34% of his 703 faceoffs. He really needs to improve those numbers, as it means he's consistently dominated in the faceoff circle.
