Hello all, and welcome to tonight's showdown between the Anaheim Outlaws and the Kelowna Knights.   This is the third matchup between these two teams this season with the series tied 1-1.  In both contests the visiting team came away with the win.   Lets see if Kelowna can break the cycle or if Anaheim continues the streak.

First Period

Josef Novotny lines up to start the game versus Ivan Maximus and Kelowna comes away with the first possession.  Both teams jockey for offensive play and the Knight's Vadim Malichov rips off the first shot of the game and is quickly gloved by Patrick Niederreiter.  But it appears Kelowna is looking to set the pace and put Anaheim on their heels.  However, throughout the first period each team is putting offensive pressure on the other, but the defensive squads are having a hard time clearing the zone.  There are 9 icings in the first 8:45 of play which is quickly wearing down each team.  Simon LeBlanc (KEL) is called for a roughing minor 9:35 in and puts Anaheim on the first Power Play of the game.  Kelowna is able to kill it off pretty easily and allowed only 2 shots on goal for Anaheim.

Only a little over 4 minutes later the Outlaws draw another penalty, this time it's a slashing call against Josef Novotny who puts his team down a man for the next two minutes.  Anaheim is looking to capitalize on the second Power Play of the night and puts out the first line Power Play unit.  They take 5 attempts at the net in the next 14 seconds, but the Knights manage to keep the game scoreless.  The period ends with the score 0-0 and Kelowna looking good at even strength, but their coach is likely to talk about some coming back with some discipline on the ice.

Stats after the first period:

Score:   Anaheim Outlaws 0 - Kelowna Knights 0
Shots:   Anaheim Outlaws 3 - Kelowna Knights 2

Second Period

With the momentum working with Anaheim, they started the period with 3 quick shots, but the Kelowna defense is able to hold them off.  Both teams then go back and forth trying to make plays and each see a few good scoring chances.  Both goalies are struggling with rebound control early in the second, but manage to reign it in a bit after a few close calls.  The flow is disrupted with Anthony Banthony (ANA) gets called for a hold 4:34 into the period.   This is Kelowna's first man advantage and they hope to turn the tide their way a bit.  However, the Power Play unit wasn't on top of their game today and Kelowna faced a number of short handed pushes to their end of the ice.   Rather than keeping the pressure on Anaheim, they managed to ice the puck 3 times on their own Power Play and came out with 0 shots.

When even strength hockey resumed, each team had a few nice looks but Anaheim pushed forward.  At 7:15 into the second Anaheim put 3 quick shots on net with the last one coming from Nick Connolly who recovered his own rebound and took an off-handed shot and found the net to put the first goal on the board.   Goal

After going down 1-0 Kelowna's mistakes got the best of them again and Josef Novotny takes his second trip to the sin bin for hooking.  Kelowna's PK unit held strong and shortly after coming back to even strength their physical play led to a Anaheim roughing call on Jerry Mander.   Kelowna came on strong with 3 shots on goal, but again found themselves on the wrong end of the ice during the Power Play.  Anaheim pushed and put up 3 shots while down a man to disrupt the Kelowna Power Play.

Back at even strength Kelowna kept up the pressure and at 15:04 Vadim Malichov puts them on the board with a stinging slapshot from the blue line that glanced off of Niederreiter's shoulder.  Goal

The remainder of the period ends uneventfully.  Anaheim special teams seems to be running strong, but they've struggled at even strength all season.   If Kelowna can keep the penalties under control they could run away with this game in the 3rd.

Stats after the second period:

Score:   Anaheim Outlaws 1 - Kelowna Knights 1
Shots:   Anaheim Outlaws 12 - Kelowna Knights 9

Third Period

After the second intermission both teams came out hoping to get the go-ahead goal early.   Kelowna came in swinging, but was not able to convert any of their 5 attempts in the first 3 minutes.  Then it happened - Josef Novotny came in with yet another holding penalty at 5:58 and went back to the box for 2 minutes of rest.  Pretty sure they are going to have to get him a plaque for all the time he is in there.

Gordon Bombay won the face-off versus Aleksandr Scherbak and got the puck straight to Anthony Archer.  Anthony takes a one-timer and goes 5 hole on Alexander Thorstrom to take the lead only 2 seconds into the Power Play.  Goal

If Kelowna wants to get back in the game they'll have to increase their discipline and...nevermind.   Piotr Horvat gets a hooking minor 24 seconds later to put Anahiem back on the Power Play.  Anaheim puts up 5 attempts on the PP, but Kelowna is able to hold them off.  With the pressure on, Kelowna was able to draw a penalty as well at 9:26 from Noah Tedla for interference.   They put up 2 shot attempts, but are unable to convert.

After 2 minutes of even strength play, Leonid Kofix (ANA) takes a shot that goes wide but is able to recover his own rebound and makes a beautiful no-angle shot on goal and sneaks it past Thorstrom to bring the lead to 2.  Goal

Kelowna responds with 4 more attempts in the next few minutes, before they are deflated by yet another penalty.   Big Fudge gets called for a hook at 17:36 and their PK unit makes yet another appearance tonight.  Anaheim puts 7 shot attempts up on this Power Play but is unable to convert.  It looks like we are done for the night, but then...

Ryan Shepard wins face-off versus Jose Miguel Pereira Ferreira in Anaheim Outlaws zone with 19 seconds left on the clock.   Kelowna makes a few clean passes and the puck Andrey Barbashev II's stick.   He takes a quick wrist shot that goes off of Niederreiter's left skate and scores!  Goal

With only 8 seconds remaining in regulation Kelowna wins the neutral zone faceoff and pulls Thorstrom from the net.   Why they didn't do this sooner no one understands, but better late than never right?   Well not so much - the final seconds tick off the clock and the visitors leave with another win.

Stats after the third period:

Score:   Anaheim Outlaws 2 - Kelowna Knights 1
Shots:   Anaheim Outlaws 21 - Kelowna Knights 13

Comment 1:

Unsung Hero of the Game:
Gordon Bombay did a great amount of work tonight for his team tonight, even if he didn't show up on the three star selection. He was solid in the faceoff circle winning 10 of 17 draws and one of those wins were key as he picked up an assist from it. With Kelowna's great amount of penalty minutes it was important Anaheim made them pay and Bombay did just that getting his helper on a go ahead power play goal in the third. He also played a big factor in shutting the Knight's power play down playing the second most penalty kill minutes. He also managed to get himself in position for a breakaway but was unable to convert.

DotG - Kelowna's Offense - Pretty much everyone, Knights

Dud of the Game goes to the entire offensive output of the Kelowna Knights. It's rare that the dud of the game isn't one particular player, but in this situation it's warranted: they only managed to put 13 shots on net the entire game, and somehow managed to score two. Were it not for a couple of lapses by Anaheim's talented Patrick Niederreiter, this game might have ended in a shutout. They'll need to be better at generating scoring chances moving forward.

⭐⭐⭐ - Leonid Kofix - Winger, Outlaws

Anaheim's Leonid Kofix comes in at third star, largely in part due to his performance on both ends of the puck. He linked up well with his linemate Anthony Archer, receiving a saucer pass from across the ice in the second and making no mistake in burying the puck past Kelowna's netminder. In the defensive zone, Kofix valiantly slid in front of a Kalevolaripaavo Kaspertommevisnapuu shot in the second period to prevent a high quality scoring chance.

⭐⭐ - Nick Connolly - Winger, Outlaws

He may have only scored one goal, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. Second star Nick Connolly peppered the Knights net with six shots on the night, and Kelowna can count themselves fortunate that only one got past their goalie. The young American winger is known for his playmaking ability, but he has a deceptive release that can fool goaltenders into misreading its trajectory. The Outlaws coaching staff will need to make sure he doesn't dwell on those missed chances, especially the two times the puck rang off the post in the third.

- Anthony Archer - Winger, Outlaws

Anthony Archer completes the clean sweep of the three stars by Outlaw wingers. The Canada-born power forward bullied the opposition every shift, creating space for himself and his linemates. Despite just a modest 16 minutes of ice time, there was no more dominating presence on the ice for either team. His assist on Kofix's goal was great, and his goal six minutes into the third period was even better: magical stick-handling deep in the crease to tuck the puck past a sprawling Alexander Thorstrom, who had no answer for Archer's creativity.

Physical Play Comparison

Come on, Kelowna. A bit embarrassed for my former team. Eight hits is pretty weak. Anaheim had a pretty weak showing as well, with 13. No standouts on either team, obviously. A whole bunch of players on Anaheim had one. In fact, only 6 skaters on the Outlaws did not get credited with a hit, which is kind of cool. The blocks are a different story. Kelowna had ten to Anaheim’s 6. Tah Puhcheese had three for the Knights, but no one else stood out in this game. The Knights really should have won this game, but they spent too much time in the penalty box. They had so few shots. This game might have tipped further in Anaheim’s favor had they not blocked as many shots as they did. I guess I have to give the physical edge to Kelowna, because of the lopsided block number.

ANA Hits: 13
KEL Hits: 8

ANA SB: 6
KEL SB: 10

When the Game Got Away

It was only a 1 goal game, but only because the Knight scored with 8 seconds left to make it so. They were down 2 goals otherwise, and didn't leave themselves enough time to score both goals. Why not, you may ask? Big Fudge found himself in the penalty box with 2 minutes and 24 seconds left. Yes, the Outlaws were on the powerplay up by 2, for 2 minutes of the final 2:24. The Knights could have certainly used that time to press the attack & pull the goalie. Instead, they were forced to wait out the 2 minutes while Fudge sat in the box, and try to score 2 goals in the 24 seconds after that. They managed one, but by that point you already knew the game was lost once Fudge took that penalty.

Comment 1: The Most Boring 1st Period Ever
SMJHL hockey is known to be fast paced and exciting! Unfortunately that just wasn’t the case to start the night between the Kelowna Knights and the Anaheim Outlaws. The teams combined for 5 shots in the first period, 3 for Anaheim and 2 for Kelowna. This was extremely egregious by Anaheim considering they had two power plays in the first period. You can bet the Anaheim coach will be telling the power play that they need to get more shots on net next practice. Ultimately, both teams need to learn how to start out a hockey game with more energy and more shots if they hope to climb the standings… and prevent the fans from falling asleep during the first period.

Comment 2: Josef Novotny and the Penalty Box
Anaheim had six power plays on the night but they were an abysmal one for six on their attempts. Lucky for them, Kelowna also went zero for three in their power play attempts. If Anaheim was better on the power play, you can bet that Kelowna Knights forward Jozef Novotny would be feeling the heat from fans and his coaching staff. Novotny was responsible for three of the six minor penalties incurred by Kelowna. He got a slashing penalty in the first period, a hooking penalty in the second period, and a holding penalty in the third period. Novotny really needs to stop taking bad stick penalties and needs to start playing better defense. Three penalties against a better power play may spell game over.

Comment 3: 3 Stars Recap
Third Star – Leonid Kofix: The third star of the night went to Leonid Kofix. Kofix had the game winning goal of the night half way through the third period which shut the door on any potential Kelowna comeback. Until that point he had a pretty quiet night finishing the game with 1 shot, 1 hit, and 1 shot block.

Second Star – Nick Connolly: I criticized Anaheim for their lack of shots this game, but Nick Connolly was the exception to that. He had six shots on net tonight but only had one goal unfortunately. Despite this he was a large driver of the Anaheim offense and deserves his second star

First Star – Anthony Archer: The first star of the night was also the only to have multiple points tonight. Anthony Archer had a goal and an assist and was instrumental in getting the win for his team. Despite capitalizing offensively, Archer only had one hit and was an even plus/minus. However he got the team the win and that’s what matters in the end!

Shot Comparison
[Image: 9anvvN5.png]

Slow Starts
This game started off real, real slow. With only five total shots on goal between the two teams in the first period, I'd be surprised if there were any fans left in the stands after the first period. What's even more surprising is that there were two penalties in this time span as well. Anaheim was able to draw two penalties, a roughing minor from Simon LeBlanc, and a slashing minor from Josef Norway. Even with two opportunities on the powerplay, Anaheim was still only able to get 3 shots on goal in the entire period. Not too surprising that Kelowna's shot total would be lower considering the time they spent on the PK, but still only managing to have an average of one shot every 10 minutes is pretty astoundingly bad. This game was absolutely a back and forth battle that spent a lot of time in the neutral zone, particularly in the first period.

Goalie Battle
With a game whose shot totals were so low, the goalies have to really be on their game. One small mistake and they might not get the chance to make up for that mistake with some big saves later. This is kind of the case here with this game. Patrick Niederreiter only faced 13 shots in total this game, but was able to stop 11 of them. Comparing that to Alexander Thorstrom who faced 21 shots but was able to save 18 of them. From a statistical standpoint, Thorstrom had a tougher game, was challenged far more, and had a better game than Niederreiter. However, Niederreiter with a .846 SV% (compared to Thorstrom's .857) ended up coming away with the win. You never wanna see the goalie that played better end up losing the game, but it seems that's what happened here.

4th Star

In todays game Anaheim beat out Kelowna, 3-2 in regulation. The ever important 4th star award was up for grabs this evening and Noah Tedla will be receive this award from the Outlaws. For the Outlaws’ tonight, Tedla was one of three players to finish with a positive +/-, and assisted the opening goal scored, getting his 13th assist this season. Noah played an extremely physical game tonight, which costed him a penalty, but was also able to rack up 2 hits and a blocked shot on the board. Luckily though Kelowna was not able to capitalize on the power play, and Tedla played a vital role tonight to get the 2 points over Kelowna in a tight race for the best seed.
