Quite a bit has been written about the S50 draft class so far, so instead of writing about the same stats and players that we’ve already seen, I decided to breakdown the first round picks of my players draft, season 48, to try and give the recent draftees an idea on what their near future might hold. So, here is a rundown of the first round picks in S48:
Season 48 - Round 1: 1. Tampa Bay Barracuda - Kaspars Claude With the first overall pick, Tampa Bay selected Kaspars Claude. Claude has had a great SMJHL career so far, winning the Four Star Cup with the Vancouver Whalers in S48 and another in S49 with the Montreal Militia. Currently sitting at 681 TPE, Claude will be spending this season with the Carolina Kracken, can he get that third Four Star Cup? 2. Hamilton Steelhawks - Gabriel Johnson Selected 2nd, one half of the Johnson & Johnson duo, Gabriel is making the move up to the SHL this season, coming into the big leagues with 689 TPE. He is a player to watch, he had a solid junior career and had enjoyed success on the international stage for Canada as well. 3. Minnesota Chiefs – FORFEIT Unfortunately, Forfeit will never get the chance to show their stuff in the SHL. At 0 TPE, Forfeit just couldn't cut it. 4. Los Angeles Panthers - Oliver Cleary After selecting Cleary with their 4th pick, Los Angeles called Oliver up to the SHL immediately. Since joining the team in S48, Cleary has collected 22 points (6g / 16a) and Cleary has amassed 733 TPE along the way, leading all first rounders in TPE. 5. Winnipeg Jets - Calogero Crudelli Crudelli was selected by the Jets in the 5th spot, he finished this past season in the SMJHL with 51 points on the season and will be looking to do more of the same with the Colorado Raptors in S50. Crudelli is sitting at 648 TPE at this time. 6. New England Wolfpack - Piotr Horvat Drafted by the New England Wolfpack, Horvat was later traded to the Texas Renegades. Horvat played his final season in the SMJHL this past season and will look to help the Renegades out this coming season with his 627 TPE. 7. San Francisco Pride (via Manhattan Rage) - Timmo Kyllonen With the seventh overall selection, the San Francisco Pride selected Timmo Kyllonen. Kyllonen is the first on our list that did not quite pan out. Kyllonen’s last update was at the end of June, just shy of the 350 junior max at 346. 8. New Orleans Specters (via San Francisco Pride) - Lyle Odelein III With the 8th pick, New Orleans Specters selected Lyle Odelein III. Odelein has been playing in St. Louis for the past three seasons but will making the move up to the SHL this season and putting on the New Orleans jersey for the first time. Odelein is currently sitting at 712 TPE and is just an all around awesome dude... 9. Chicago Syndicate - Nick Connolly 9th overall pick was owned by the Chicago Syndicate, they selected forward Nick Connolly. Connolly has been playing for the Anaheim Outlaws, winning a Four Star Cup with them in S47. As of right now, it looks like Connolly will be skating with the Outlaws for another season with 649 TPE. 10. Toronto North Stars - Mika Kandinsky With the 10th overall, Toronto North Stars selected St. Louis Scarecrow centerman, Mika Kandinsky. Mika has been playing on arguably the best line in the SMJHL for the past two seasons and has been putting up very impressive numbers. He will be stepping into the SHL this coming season, and it sounds like he may be getting some pretty decent playing time. Look out for Mika as a potential rookie of the year candidate in S50 with his 713 TPE. 11. Buffalo Stampede (via Edmonton Blizzard) - Satoshi Zizagooney Buffalo selected Satoshi Zizagooney with the 11th overall pick. Satoshi has been playing in Detroit with the Falcons while in the juniors and it looks like he’ll be spending at least another season with the S49 Laurifier trophy winners. After a massive update this week, Zizagooney sits at 602 TPE 12. San Francisco Pride (via New Orleans Specters) - Bobby Bobcalf The San Fransico Pride, with their second pick of the first round, selected right winger Bobby Bobcalf. Bobcalf is another member of the S48 Four Star Cup winning Vancouver Whalers. Bobcalf will be playing with the Whalers once again this coming season, with a TPE count of 442 13. Texas Renegades - Padraig Sarantez Lucky number 13 may have not worked out for Texas. Sarantez hit the SMJHL cap at the start of July, but his last update was a couple of weeks later. Sarantez did however win a Four Star Cup this season with Montreal but it’s looking like 374 TPE will be a far as this player goes. 14. Edmonton Blizzard (via Buffalo Stampede) - Barrett Blackwood The third St. Louis Scarecrow taken in the first round, the Edmonton Blizzard selected winger Barrett Blackwood. Last season with the Crows, Blackwood had a career year and was in the top ten in scoring with 47 points. Barrett, sitting at 589 TPE, will be making scarecrow noises again in S50 as he leads the Crows against the rest of the league. 15. Calgary Dragons - Atlas Rush The Calgary Dragons selected Altas Rush with the second last pick of the first round. Rush is currently sitting at 673 TE and looks to be spending another season in the SMJHL with the Halifax Raiders. Rush has led the SMJHL for the past two seasons in hits, with over 300 hits. This heavy hitter should definitely be in the top spot again for hits and fact that the rest of the SMJHL probably isn’t looking forward to. 16. West Kendall Platoon - Kasperi Braulin The one and only goalie selected in the first round went to the West Kendall Platoon with the final pick of the round. Braulin backstopped the Whalers to the Four Star Cup in S48 and looked to be a dominate goalie for seasons to come. Unfortunately, Braulin’s last update, to put him at 479 TPE, was in mid August so he is considered an inactive. Now let’s look at the results so the S50 first rounders can try get a better idea on what their futures hold: Where will you be playing? - 1 player was called up after their draft season and has been playing in the SHL for the past two seasons. - 4 players will be making to move up to the SHL this season (2 seasons after draft). - 7 players will be returning to the SMJHL for their 4th season in the juniors. - 3 players are considered inactive. How much TPE will I have? - 3 players have reached the 700 TPE mark: o Oliver Cleary – 733 o Mika Kandinsky – 713 o Lyle Odelein III – 712 - 7 players are above 600 TPE: o Gabriel Johnson – 689 o Kaspar Claude – 681 o Atlas Rush – 671 o Nick Connelly – 649 o Calogero Crudelli – 648 o Piotr Horvat – 627 o Satoshi Zizagooney – 602 - 1 player over 500 TPE: o Barrett Blackwood – 589 - 2 players over 400 TPE: o Kasperi Braulin – 479 o Bobby Bobcalf – 442 - 2 players over 300 TPE o Padraig Sarantez - 374 o Timmo Kyllonen - 346 Will I be traded? - 1 player was traded from their SMJHL team - 1 player was traded from the SHL team that drafted them I think that’s all I got for now. Apologies to my fellow S48 first rounders if I got any info wrong! Good luck to all the S50 draftees and congratulations to all the first rounders.
