And I would like to touch on one team that came so close to that Cinderella story for a few older players. I have not been in the league for very long but remember the S48 Winnipeg Jets quite fondly. It has now been five seasons removed since the S48 Jets deep playoff run and thought they might deserve a little look during media week. I’ll start off by saying this was the first or second year for a lot of the S46 draftees. It was the rookie season for myself (Commander Shepard), Nick Brain, and Noah Gallagher who have all become top earners and elite level players now. The S48 Jets also had the young Michael Scarn as well. We were known as ‘the kids’ and were tasked as the future of the Winnipeg Jets system. The core of the team consisted of many Superstar players whether they were just before their prime like; Ola Wagstom, Lil’ Manius, or Slip Mcscruff, or in their late primes like the hall of famer; Jason Visser, or Crossfit Jesus, and Gary Grease. The team was quite simply a well built team with lots of different pieces. Although we were not necessarily the best team in the league. The line up itself was solid with a top line of Lil Manius-Jason Visser-with a rotating right winger between Crossfit Jesus, Ola Wagstrom, or Nick Brain. The top pairing was also quite good with Troy Mcclure II and Gary Grease. This top line could match up with anyone. Keep in mind that Crossfit Jesus came over to the Jets to finish his career with his original team and we weren’t sure what to expect. The 2nd line was centered by secret agent; Michael Scarn with his usual winger in Igantius Blunt. Like the first line it usually had a rotating winger depending on performance. While the 2nd pairing was Slip Mcscruff and the old timer Max Weber. The third line was centered by Commander Shepard with his fellow rookie winger in Noah Gallagher. Usually Nick Brain was the right winger hence the nickname’ the kids’ line. We were all rookies and usually stayed together. Filling out the defense was the young Dylan Karlsson and another old timer in Max Poulin. Just to top it off this S48 Jets team had one last beauty in Corey Bearss who was well loved by his teammates. The goalies which some considered our weakness were; Cedric Moreau, and the young Vivian Leblanc. The Season The Jets had an outstanding preseason that year setting expectations insanely high for the local Winnipeg fans who religiously follow their team. The Jets won a Challenge cup in S44 and the fans felt that they could fit one more in for the older Jet players who played there for so long. Jason Visser and Crossfit Jesus played like they never ever were split up with Visser notching a ridiculous 76 points and 35 goals in the 50 preseason games. The Jets carried that preseason momentum into the regular season with an outstanding 12 wins in their first 16 games. The fans were going bongo but the Jets could not keep up the momentum all season long and regressed a bit. The Jets essentially won almost half of their games in the first 16 games and in the end finished with a record of 29-19-2 with 60 points that placed them 2nd in the western conference behind the superteam New Orleans Specters.. The Jets were dominant on the road with a 16-7-2 record away from home. On the scoring side of things Jason Visser led the Jets with 60 points and came 3rd in scoring league wide behind Anders Christiansen who had 62 points, and Flacko Lagerfield with 66 points. However Jason Visser led in goals with 28, one more than Manuel Gotze. In fact the rest of the Jets top line was outstanding as well with Lil’ Manius having 54 points and Crossfit Jesus with 44 points and a team leading +23. Lil’ Manius could have been argued to be our most valuable player over Visser as he had 7 first star nods, and 12 three star placements in total. Whereas Visser only had 3 first stars with the same amount of placements. Nick Brain also had an outstanding rookie season with 28 points and 14 goals. This placed Brain 4th in rookie scoring and tied him for first in rookie goals scored. Wagstrom hadn’t become the dominant player we know him as today and had a respectable 38 points that season. On the goaltender side of things Cedric Moreau had an amazing season and career best with a 918 save percentage good for 2nd place behind Benjamin Blue. And a league leading goals against average of 2.54 despite not being the top earning goalie in the league. Moreau finished with 23 wins in 35 games. On the team stats side the Jets were top 5 in goals for, goals against, penalty kill, and in hits per game. The Jets tended to take a lot of penalties and did not have a great power play. The Jets were also the league worst in the faceoffs with only a 46.09 faceoff percentage. The Playoffs The season came to a close and the standings were set. In the western conference the New Orleans Specters came first (65 points), with The Jets 2nd (60 points), and the San Francisco Pride 3rd (59 points) earning them byes. The Edmonton Blizzard (55 points), and Calgary Dragons (55 points and 1 less win than the Blizzard) rounded out the last two wild card spots. Over in the eastern conference the Tampa Bay Barracuda took first place with 66 points followed by the divisional winners of the Great Lakes division: the Hamilton Steelhawks who had 59 points. The West Kendall Platoon took the last bye standing with 63 points. The wild card teams in the east were; the Toronto North Stars with 58 points, and Buffalo Stampede who also had 58 points. The wild card round did not last long with the deep Buffalo Stampede sweeping the Toronto North Stars and the Calgary Dragons defeating the Edmonton Blizzard in 5 games. The next round's matchups in the west were; New Orleans Specters vs Calgary Dragons, Winnipeg Jets vs San Francisco Pride. In the east it was; Buffalo Stampede vs Tampa Bay Barracuda, and West Kendall Platoon vs the Hamilton Steelhawks. Many of these series were hard fought with the Buffalo Stampede edging out the president’s trophy winning Tampa Bay Barracuda in 7 games. The West Kendall Platoon kept rolling, defeating the Hamilton Steelhawks in 5 games. Back in the west the New Orleans Specters ended up beating the Calgary Dragons in 6 games. The Winnipeg Jets series was an absolute nail biter. Every single game except one was decided by one goal. The Cinderella story started off because the Jets had lost two in a row at home to the San Francisco Pride and with one of those in overtime. However in the next game, like in the regular season the Jets took over away from home winning 3-1 with a dominant game by Michael Scarn who had the game opening goal and the insurance goal. The next game was equally as tight with a defensive grind slog that also went to overtime. There was one goal for each team in the first by Ignatius Blunt, and Jack Tanner respectively. But the rest of the game had no goals and only one penalty so on to overtime we went. Overtime did not last long with the young defenseman Dylan Karlsson scoring the game winner. The next game was an incredibly close goaltender showdown that went to overtime. In the end Jason VIsser scored the game winning overtime goal but Cedric Moreau would be the hero of the game making an absolute show with 46 saves in 47 shots against. Again another stupidly close defensive game occurred during game 6 that had one goal! Max Weber scored about 6 minutes into the first period and that would end up the game winning goal. Cedric Moreau essentially won us this series by himself only letting in 3 goals in the 4 straight games we won. The semi finals was where a lot of the magic happened for the Jets. However in the east the Buffalo Stampede had a good series beating the West Kendall Platoon in 5 games. They had won all of their series in 5 games or less. On the west side the story was much different with another insanely close series that could have gone either way. Less of a defensive and goaltending duel this was more a series of trading offensive wins.New Orleans had the home ice advantage and started off great scoring 3 straight goals in the first game. The Jets almost came back scoring 2 goals in the third but the Specters grabbed an insurance goal and put the Jets away in game 1. Game 2 was a different story similar to game 6 against the Pride, the Jets scored two quick goals in the first by Ignatius Blunt, and Dylan Karlsson and then went onto to shut down mode the rest of the game. Moreau was outstanding with a 27 save shutout. Game 3 was a bit different. The Specters went up 2 goals to none early in the first with goals from Paddy O’Sullivan and Roman Augustus. The Jets were lucky enough to break the tie in the first with a goal from Gary Grease. In period 2 the Jets offense finally came alive and helped out Moreau this playoffs, with 4 straight goals from every single line and would ride that lead to the end. McScruff ended up 1st star with 2 assists, a +3, and 5 blocked shots. But Moreau also shut the door after those 2 early goals ending up with 33 saves in 35 shots against. Game 4 was not good at all for the Jets with the Specters angry with their performance. The Specters scored 4 straight goals. Only Ola Wagstrom showed up with the Jets only 2 goals that game. Piotr Czerkawski was fantastic with 3 points and 2 goals. Aleister Cain was also great with 37 saves in 39 shots against. The New Orleans Specters kept up the pace in game 5 with both Oisin Fletcher and Aleister Cain having fantastic games. Fletcher scored the only two goals of the game, and Cain made 27 saves in his shutout. Despite this Moreau kept the Jets in the game with 35 saves in 37 shots against. Game 6 was one of the most exciting games of the S48 playoffs. It opened up with a goal from Nicholas Williams 5 minutes into the first giving the Specters the early lead. At around 10 minutes in Ignatius Blunt scored a power play goal after a high sticking from Clint Eastwood. And only 48 seconds later the Jets took the lead with a strike from the legend; Corey Bearss. As the Jets were trying to hold out the lead the Specters scored with under a minute left with fellow youngster Jimmy Slothface scoring. The game was tied at 2 at the end of the first period. The 2nd period had no scoring but the Specters dominated with 10 shots to the Jets 2. Moreau again just kept chugging along. Onto the 3rd period after an interference penalty to Gary Grease Oisin Fletcher scored his 7th of the playoff giving the Specters a 3-2 lead. The 3rd period would then go on till about a minute left in the period the Jets tied it! With a goal from the secret agent; Michael Scarn. The Specters were stunned as they had dominated shot wise all game. We went to overtime. But the overtime did not last long ,only 6 seconds with the big line coming through with a goal from Lil’ Manius off of the first rush. The Jets crowd went crazy. Game 7 was less exciting and the jets carried the momentum into the next game in spite of an opening goal by Joe Kurczewski. The Visser line came alive finally with 4 goals collectively that night. Visser had 4 points and 3 assists finally getting a first star nod this playoff. The Specters were stunned. The Jets were Cole Reinhart Trophy Winners. The Challenge Cup Final And with that The Jets were off to the final. Not many expected the Jets to beat the Specters. The Jets would go on to face the Buffalo Stampede who had won only two seasons prior in S46 were looking for one more. The Jets were in a similar position looking for a 2nd cup in the past four seasons. The Stampede were much better than their regular season record suggested. With loads of depth and lots of over 1000 tpe players the Stampede were the favourites. But just like the two series the Jets had leading to the final, the Challenge Cup final was incredibly close. This time the Jets had home ice advantage with more points in the regular season. The Jets got off to a great start in Game 1 with three straight goals in the first period in the first 6 minutes. With two of them from Gary Grease. Despite this the Stampede managed to get a goal with under 5 minutes left in the first period. In the 2nd period Ola Wagstrom showed that potential with a goal that really kept the game out of reach; his second of the night. In the end the Jets won 4-2 with Wagstrom grabbing first star nods. Moreau was fantastic with 33 saves in 35 shots. These next set of games were some of the most exciting in SHL history with 3 straight overtime games. The Cinderella story continued in game 2 with the Stampede grabbing an early 2 to nothing lead in the first. Viktor Marius had his 11th. However ‘the kids’ line came through with a goal from Nick Brain assisted by Dylan Karlsson and Commander Shepard. The period came to an end. In the second period there was a lot of grinding and no scoring until the 17th minute with another goal from Nick Brain assisted by Commander Shepard. This tie would last the entire 3rd period with the Jets heavily outplaying the Stampede in shots. Robinson was amazing that night. Despite Robinson’s great play much like game 6 of the semi finals the Visser line ended the game 12 seconds into the overtime with a goal from Lil’ Manius. Nick Brain was named 1st star. The Jets went up 2 games to none. The fans were believing as the Jets finally won some at home. The next two games were absolutely insane. Game 3 started with a bang with the Stampede again taking a 2 goal lead in the first, and again the Jets coming within one with less than 5 minutes to go. Onto the 2nd the Jets managed to tie the game at 2 goals a piece with a goal from Michael Scarn. The 3rd period was one to remember for hockey fans with the Jets taking their first lead of the night with a goal from Nick Brain. The Stampede weren’t finished however and tied the game at 3 goals. 10 minutes later with less than 5 minutes to go the Stampede took the lead again with a power play goal. BUT the story continued! The Jets AGAIN tied the game with less than a minute to go with a goal from Ola Wagstrom. Sadly, this time the overtime magic ran out and the reverse happened with the Stampede scoring the overtime goal in the first two minutes from Demot Lavelle. Game 4 was more of the same and in my opinion the craziest game I have ever seen in Simon. In the first the Jets stormed out of the gate with 3 goals in the first 10 minutes from a bunch of lines. But the Stampede finally got a goal one minute after the 3rd goal from Louie Garrett. There were 12 shots for the Jets and 15 for the Stampede in this period. In the 2nd period the Stampede three quarters of the way through cut the lead to one with a goal from Connor Tanner. However another quick period started by the Jets got their 2 goal lead back with a goal from Nick Brain. BUT the Stampede kept rolling and McScruff took a high sticking call at 16:35. The Stampede would then score on the ensuing powerplay. The game was 4-3 for the Jets. In a CRAZY finish the Stampede tied it with less than 30 seconds left, absolutely stunning the Jets and giving us a taste of our own medicine. So on to overtime we went. No one found the back of the net in the first overtime period and we went on to double overtime. The shots in overtime were 11 for the Jets and 10 for the Stampede. The 2nd overtime looked about the same with no one scoring until 13 minutes into the period Viktor Marius found the back of the net in a marathon game. The final shot total was 42 for the Jets, and 56 for the Stampede. Series was tied at 2 games a piece. Game 5 was another close game like usual. The Jason Visser line scored an early goal one minute into the game. The game was played at that score till about the 18th minute the Stampede tied it with a goal from Kevin Hamilton. They carried that momentum into the 2nd with three straight goals. But with less than 2 minutes left in the second Max Poulin scored to bring the Jets within 2. The third period was all Jets, with the Jets notching 21 shots. Michael Scarn finally buried one at 15 minutes in. However that epic final minute Cinderella magic didn’t happen and Robinson closed the door making 38 saves in 41 shots in the end. Stampede were up 3-2. Game 6 is where it all came down with the Jets facing elimination. Right off the bat the Jets got a powerplay but made a huge mistake and Viktor Marius had a short handed goal 2 minutes in. The rest of the period was scoreless; 1-0 Stampede. Stampede in almost the exact same fashion as game 5 scored three straight goals in the 2nd putting them up 4-0. Commander Shepard managed a goal with 2 minutes left in the 2nd to bring the Jets within 3. The 3rd period was an extremely close checking game but Nick Brain managed a goal 7 minutes into the 3rd making it 4-2. The Jets just lost their steam and could not tie it up with Robinson closing the door. Final score was 4-2 and the Stampede won the Challenge Cup 4-2. Our hearts were shattered. Viktor Marius would win the Playoff MVP award with his many clutch goals. Final Thoughts In my mind this series could have gone either way and was a very exciting series to follow with the play by plays. I always wondered what would have happened to the Jets roster the following years if we indeed did win. It would have been something to win a final cup for both Visser and Crossfit Jesus. As after this unbelievably devastating loss the Jets team sort of imploded with many of the players leaving for greener pastures. The next few seasons saw an exodus in mass with Lil’ Manius leaving, Ola Wagstrom, Noah Gallagher, Troy McClure III, and Michael Scarn leaving as well. Later Jason Visser would retire and never get that last cup. I always think of what if those players stayed? The Jets would have two 2000 tpe players, 3 S46 high earning players, and one of the higher earning S47 players. But alas here we are and that is the story of the S48 ‘Almost Cinderella’ run by the Winnipeg Jets. I wanted to ask the league; are there any other teams like this where they came very close with lots of different pieces from a lot of different age groups? What is the best almost team? P.S. In some universe there is a Jets team with a top line of Ola Wagstrom-Lil Manius-Nick Brain. Wow ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks to @FlappyGiraffe and @ToeDragon84 for the making these sick sigs!

Worth noting that Michael Scarn and Ignatius Blunt both hit the post with possible game-winners in that Challenge Cup Finals.
Yes, Buffalo was the better team and their Cup win was fully deserved, but that one hurts me more and more in hindsight. Also #TheKids were such a great rookie 3rd line, its a shame it only stuck together for like a season. ![]() Former Agent of Nick Brain: Center/Right Winger - ![]() ![]() |
