1217 Words - x2 for WJC

After some solid wins from Team Canada, the group decided that in between our World Junior Championships games, they should set up some Dungeons and Dragons and play one-shot game to unwind, have some fun, and take some time to take our minds off of the stress of the WJC.

Devin Basher volunteers to the Dungeon Master for this game. This is his second time going into the WJC with Team Canada, scoring 2 goals last season. So far this season he’s sitting with 4 assists, and a +/- of +3. He has yet to make any goals but he is determined. He’s well versed in the rules of D&D as well as the world of Exandria; the world of well-known voice actor Matthew Mercer and seen in the Guide to Wildemount campaign book.

The first player of the Team Canada one-shot is Jason Desrouleaux. This is also Desrouleaux’s second time playing for Team Canada in the WJC, also scoring 2 goals last season. He’s been pretty quiet so far with only 1 assist, but also has one of the lowest average ice times of the team. Perhaps with some more ice time, he will shine. Desrouleaux is playing a tiefling warlock named Kosmong who has reddish, ruddy skin, horns and all-black eyes. He wears a simple tunic, some leathers, trousers and boots. Kosmong is a new warlock still learning to hone his powers with the archdevil he made a deal with. He frequently dreams of a grey, winged being with large talons, and a long tail. It’s hard to tell if this creature is humanoid, but it is the source of Kosmongs new powers. When he uses his magic, dark red, almost blood coloured smoke emits from his eyes and spellcasting focus.

Wile Coyote is another player taking part in the group’s one-shot campaign. Coyote was also with Basher and Desrouleaux last season for Team Canada, however, finished the championships empty-handed. This season he’s wracked up 3 points so far, with a +/- of +3. The trio has already met and known each other from playing together for the Whalers this season. Coyote took inspiration from his name and decided to be a half-elven Circle of the Moon Druid, named Gormon Loraydark, allowing him to wild shape into beasts like coyotes, wolves, badgers, etc. His slender half-elven form is draped with green and navy robes, inspired by the Whalers colours. He’s got dark brown hair that’s been braided with different green shrubbery woven into it. He carries a wooden staff that has vines and other shrubberies growing off of it.

Guy Legrande is our third adventuring party member. This is Legrande’s second WJC, last season he wracked up a total of 4 points, and as of right now he’s sitting at 2 points and a +/- of +5. Sticking to his roots as a Newfoundland Berserker, Legrande will be playing a fire genasi berserker barbarian named Sol Alderbrand. Sol has ashy purple skin with crack-like tattoos that glow like lava that swirl across his body. He has flame-like hair and darker sunspots on his shoulders and across his face. He wears a leather harness for his great axe and some baggy pants. When he goes into a frenzy, all the glowing red areas of his body and hair turn to blues and purples.

Our final adventuring party member of the Team Canada one-shot is Daniel Laforest. Laforest was the most successful in last seasons WJC out of our 5 Dungeons and Dragons players, finishing with 7 points, 4 goals and 3 assists. With only a third of the number of games played in comparison, Laforest is already over halfway to last season’s points with a total of 4 points. Inspired by his name and his team, the Kelowna Knights, Laforest will be playing an Oath of the Ancients paladin names Archich. Archich is a firbolg with blueish grey fur and has vibrant, earthy, green hair almost like moss. He’s very tall, typical for his kind, but very gentle. Archich worships the Wild Mother or Melora, who is like a mother nature equivalent. He wears a simple beige tunic, some simple trousers and boots for travelling long distances. He is a nomad, tends to travel alone and his current goal is to complete his mission given to him by Melora until he comes across the adventuring party.

Our story begins in Shadycreek Run, a sovereign town away from the Empire and the law. There is a mish-mash of individuals that come to Shadycreek Run, mostly thieves, those looking for quick and dirty work, rumours of murderers or paid killers. The four adventurers meet up and are tasked with hunting a wealthy family in power known as the Briarwoods. They had fleed from their home in Tal’dorei after a group named Vox Machina cleared them out of Whitestone, returning the Whitestone castle back to its rightful owners; the de Rolo family. Oh, and they’re also vampires. They fled to some abandoned houses in the Savalirwood. The Savalirwood is known for its dangerous, dark, and decaying forest. It is rumoured that the farther in you go the more dangerous it gets. The safe house where the Briarwoods are located is deep within the forest and would require some time to travel to.

After some amazing stealth and perception rolls, the party find several abandoned buildings. Archich being a paladin used Detect Undead to help them scan for vampiric life around this area. This was a huge benefit and gave their location away. The party set up for an ambush and wait for the perfect time to strike. They knew the Briarwoods would be on the run and would not have time to rest up and recover from their previous encounter with Vox Machina.

All of the players were feeling a little extra lucky given their last win in the WJC and jumped the Briarwoods as they were getting ready to escape. We roll attack rolls for the surprise round and Legrande rolls a natural 20 for Sol, he goes into a frenzy and does significant damage because of the critical hit! The rest do their damage and figure out their plan of attack. They all traded blows back and forth, Gormon getting really low on health being the weakest in the health department. Archich heals up Gormon with Lay Hands and they prepare their final plan: Sunbeam. The Briarwoods benefit from the dark canopied forest by hiding away from the sun. Gormon luckily had Sunbeam prepared, a powerful spell surely to deal more damage to vampiric creatures.

As the Briarwoods prepare to flee with arcane means, Kosmong reacts quickly with a swift Counterspell to delay their escape. Gormon sets up and with a very hadouken-Esque motion, mutters some arcane words and launches this beam of radiant energy towards the injured vampires reducing them to ash. Another win for Team Canada! The four are gassed up and so excited with their success, but need to rest up for the rest of the upcoming games. Not only was this game super fun, but it was also a good team-building exercise and learning to play to each other's strengths. The team hopes to use this energy and channel it into the rest of the WJC and win another gold for Team Canada.

Jason Desrouleaux is cool because he took a tiefling, Tiefling/Warlock is also a solid Race/Class combo depending on what he took so I'm feeling that. Wile Coyote choose a half-elf so I instantly don't respect them because elves are garbage. I'm not gonna lie, I have a real anti-elf prejudice that I have to work hard to overcome. I really don't like elves.

This might be a good build but it's a dandelion eater so it makes my stomach turn. Fire Genasi barbarian is an interesting build. I don't know a lot about the Genasi so I'm into different to this build.

Daniel Laforest's character is interesting because I'm a big fan of oathbreaker paladins. I find traditional paladins kind of stale but I think this is still a solid build. Firbolg are a weird race. Another race I'm not super familiar with but people seem to like 'em so I guess they're cool.
