(Graded) Deep Dive #1 - Maine Timbers Game Score review

(This post was last modified: 08-20-2020, 05:02 PM by StamkosFan.)

For my first deep dive I have taken @funk's advice (his deep dive) and will be looking at the SMJHL friendly version of the Game Score for Maine Timbers while also having a brief look across the board and the leading players!

For consistency I’ve used the same formula as mentioned in funk’s article (despite the argument other parameters should be included):

(0.75*G)+(0.5*A)+(0.075*SOG)+(0.05*BLK)+((0.05*TkA)-(0.05*GvA))+(0.05*RelCF)+(0.15*PlusMinus) = GS

For reference, the 3 players with the highest GS/GP in the league are included below.

The Timber players are all quite far behind the top trio of Marner, de Siren & Grimstad who are all operating at remarkably high GS/GP. Notably the GS/GP mentioned in funk’s article has dropped across the board.

The average GS/GP for the league is 0.41 and the Timber roster have an average of 0.49.

While the Timber players are ahead of the average GS/GP they don’t have any single player in the top 20 for GS/GP. Kyle Sutton comes in at a 24th place with 0.74.

In the table we can see that Kyle Sutton has a lead in the team for GS/GP and close behind there are a trio containing 3 players (Hellquist, Ball & Oscarsson) who are all separated by only 0.01.

Sutton has done it all for Maine, he’s blocking shots, taking the puck more than he’s losing it, shot most in the team and also scored the most goals. He’s also very effective at keeping the opposing team from creating too many chances as seen as his very competitive (league wise) relCF.

Hellquist has obtained his small lead in the trio much the same way Sutton got his score, by being varied and playing a solid game across the board. He does have a better +/- at 9 but does lose out on some score as he’s dropping more pucks than what he’s stealing away. Hellquist is also blocking a lot of shots for the team.

Ball, who is the only player in the top group that has a Game Rating below 60, has not scored as much as the other members in the top 4, but he’s assisted 23 goals (tied first for the Timbers). Like Hellquist, Ball is causing more give-aways than take-aways, at 16 give-aways compared to 8 take-aways. Ball has the lowest RelCF in the group and the only negative.

Oscarsson being the final member in the top 4 is also producing a good number of both goals and assists while also being the 3rd and final member of the squad who have had over 100 shots on goal thus far.

Unsurprisingly, at the bottom of the list with the lowest Game Score in the team we have the 2 Timber rookies, Hobbes and Johansson, at 0.26 and 0.21 respectively. Hobbes has reached his score mainly by producing 14 points whereas Johansson, who is more defensively focused, has blocked more than double the shots of Hobbes while he has produced 2 goals and 6 assists. Additionally, Johansson has +2 compared to Hobbes -2.

One surprise is the low GS/GP of Adrik Baranov, his GS/GP is only at 0.44 while Baranov has a Game Rating of 64

Konrad Danke is the most average player for Maine, his GS/GP is bang on both the average and the median value for the team.

APPROVED +5 TPE @krazko
