Hudson goes Berserk in Newfoundland
#1

KSTL Sports Desk

It's been a tough season for St Louis Scarecrows star winger Eric Hudson. It would seem that a 33 point, +17, 104 shot block season that ended with a Holmes Award for Best Defensive Forward is a tough act to follow. Forty games into the season and Hudson only had 9 points.  At least for one game, that luck changed dramatically.  In the most recent game in Newfoundland, Hudson exploded for 3 goals, outscoring the whole Berserker squad by himself in a 4-1 victory for the Scarecrows.  The one goal Newfoundland scored prevented Hudson from a getting a natural hat-trick, but on that night it was the Eric Hudson show.

The first goal came early in the first period as St. Louis was trying to enter the Berserkers zone. Kriss Darzins tried to dump the puck in, but was stopped at the line, rookie defenseman Matty David corralled the puck, passed it over to Colin Lambert, who fed the puck to Hudson.  Hudson ripped a slapper from just inside the blue line and smoked it past goalie Cale Admundson.

The second goal came about 30 seconds later. As is tradtion, the scoring line stays out for the next faceoff and Grapefruit Lizard wins possession for St Louis. Newfoundland briefly sends it into the Scarecrows zone but rookie Matty David once again collects the puck. A pass attempt to Kriss Darzins misses and the puck sails down to the Newfoundland zone, but Hudson wins the foot race just ahead of PBJ Souppan. Hudson snaps a quick shot from in close and it beats Admundson again! He never got set after the first goal.

Late in the first period Ryuuji Minamino would tally a goal for Newfoundland to make the score 2-1, but it would be quiet for the Berserkers after that.

Halfway through the third period, with the score still 2-1 in favor of St. Louis, Hudson finally completed the hat trick with a flurry of action.  Rookie defensman Bud Weiser shoots, Admundson makes the save, Hudson collects the rebound and shoots quickly, Admundson makes the save again! Hudson collects his own rebound, passes it to Jimmy Dekens, who loses the puck to Newfoundland, but Grapefruit Lizard keeps it in the zone, passes to Darzins who passes to Hudson, St Louis sets up a cycle as Hudson sends it back to Grapefruit Lizard, who sends it to Erben Kasius on the point. One-timer by Kasius, Admundson makes the save but once again Hudson collects the rebound and tucks it home! Nothing Admundson could do on that one. Hudson would not be denied.

Back up goalie Richard Majors tossed his hat on the ice and the bench erupted in cheers and stick-taps. Unfortunately, potting a hat-trick on the road means no deafening cheers and raining hats.  A handful of fans tossed a hat in recognition of the event, but mostly silence filled the arena, except for the sound of the Scarecrows celebrating.

Elwulf Jericson would finish the game with an empty net goal to bring the final score to 4-1.

The three goals brought Hudson to 12 points, matching his total from his rookie season in the SMJHL.  The third goal was also his 90th point in his junior career. The race for 100 is still on, but seemingly unlikely with 10 points needed in 8 games.  It's likely that Hudson will finish his junior career this season and join the Texas Renegades of the SHL for next season.
