SHL's Best by Draft Number (14-6)
#1

#14 - Benjamin Wong (Season 8) - West Kendall Platoon

Another very easy pick kicks off this section of the list. Wong was a generational player gone too soon. Wong played in the inflation era which definitely helped his numbers, but regardless of when you played, 625 points in 645 games is very impressive. He leads his pick in points and goals while also being top 3 in assist totals. Wong never won a cup in his career but he was a 4 time all-star and a 1 time Khan Trophy winner. Solid career for a forgotten forward in the inflation era.

Honourable mention: Daniel Merica

#13 - Kristian Eriksson (Season 20) - Toronto North Stars

One of only three players in league history with of 1000 points for his career finds himself as the best #13 pick of all time. Eriksson ranks 2nd all time in points (1012), 2nd in goals (489) and 14th in assists (523) which puts him easily in first for all categories of this class. Eriksson is a 1 time Challenge Cup Champion, 1 time MVP, 1 time playoff MVP, 4 time All Team and a goal scoring champion. Eriksson has totals that will be hard to surpass and was always considered a class act throughout his entire career.

#12 - Sergei Karpotsov (Season 1) - Winnipeg Jets

Bias may play a factor here and Joe K may deserve this spot (fantastic career btw), but longevity does not always translate to the best. We dont look at Bobby Orr and Chris Chelios and say they are equals. Karpotsov is a three time challenge cup champion giving him a 75% success ratio and a 100% success ratio in number of cup appearances. In 160 games, Karpotsov amassed 156 points to go along with 299 hits and 69 blocked shots. Karpo also lead the league in scoring once and has an MVP to his name. Karpo was also the first ever Hall of Famer way back in Season 7.

Honourable Mention: Joe K

#11 - Laurius Prikulus (Season 13) - Winnipeg Jets

Prik is a top 10 goalie of all time in this league and another easy choice for this list. Prik ranks 8th all time in wins with 329, 7th in shutouts with 41 while sporting an impressive 2.5 GAA. Prikulus is a 2 time Challenge Cup Champion, 1 time MVP, 3 time top goalie winner and a 1 time Khan winner. Prik ranks 8th all time in the SHL for accomplished players which helps make his case even stronger as the best #11 pick of all time.

Honourable Mention: Jed Loren

#10 - Tommy Tuck (Season 39) - Toronto North Stars

Another spot, another goalie. Tuck is one spot ahead of Prik and sees himself above the former Jets goalie in a number of categories. Tuck currently sits at 6th all time in wins with 333 sporting a 909 save percentage and a 2.9 GAA. While his bottom line numbers may not be as impressive as other goalies, he has the hardware to back him up. Tuck won 2 Challenge Cups, 1 MVP, 2 Playoff MVPs, 3 time top goalie winner and a 4 time Honcho winner. Tuck was a winner everywhere he went and is very deserving of this spot.

Honourable Mention: Robert Spezza

#9 - Jakub Aittokallio (Season 13) - Edmonton Blizzard

If Terrence Nova was almost any other draft slot, he would make this list. However he was picked 9th which is the same position as the greatest goalie of all time. Aittokallio is 2nd all time in wins with 402 and first in shutouts with 53 which also makes him the only netminder to eclipse 50 shutouts in SHL history. Aitto also sports a career 2.44 goals against average and a 905 save. Aitto won 3 Challenge Cups, 1 MVP, 1 Playoff MVP, 1 McBride and 1 Honcho while playing in an era that was over-ran by amazing goaltending. Throughout the lifespan of the SHL, Aitto has stood tall as the best goalie ever (and yet somehow underrated) and was an easy choice at this spot.

Honourable Mention: Nova

#8 - Jason Visser (Season 31) - Winnipeg Jets

We take a break from the goalies for a second and move to one of the best players of all time. Visser was a constant star in this league racking up 379 goals (10th all time) and 938 points (7th all time) in just 950 games which just adds to his overall greatness. Visser won 2 Challenge Cups, 2 MVPs, and 3 Khan Trophies. Visser led the league in scoring twice and lead in goals 3 times. An absolute legend and obvious pick at this spot.

Honourable Mention: Chris Partlow

#7 - Chernika Banananov (Season 22) - Minnesota Chiefs

Banananov was taken 7th but deserved to be a top 3 pick in Season 22. Banananov has so much offensive talent and she showed it early and often, finishing with 305 goals for his career in just 706 games. Those 305 goals are good for 30th all time which makes you wonder how much higher she would have been had she played longer that 14 seasons. Banananov ranks 2nd in her class in points with 626. While she did not take home a Challenge Cup, she was a 2 time Dar winner as the leagues best two way performer and received a nomination for MVP once. Finally, Banananov lead the league in points twice and goals once.

#6 - Mark Harter (Season 22) - Toronto North Stars

We end todays part of the list with the 4th goalie mentioned. Harter played 19 seasons in the league winning a Challenge Cup along the way. Harter sits 5th all time in wins with 359 and 5th in shutouts with 43 while sporting a career 2.76 GAA and a 904 save. Harter took home 1 top goalie award while being nominated two other times and also took home a Honcho award. A fantastic goalie with great longevity.

Next article (most likely monday) we will break down #5-1 while also making note of some later picks.

Didn't know I shared a draft spot with Harter. If only I played more seasons. If I played the same number of seasons as Harter and kept my pace I would have easily passed his win total. That challenge cup was a great feather in his cap. He definitely had the longevity but I am still proud of my Khan, Mexico, Jesster, 2 Honchos, 2 McBrides, and 3 McBride Nominations in 7 seasons.

I still regret retiring Haas so early every single day I log onto the site.

I would say its a 75% retirement of SHL! the coming back to LAP brought me back around 15% Wink

but not see VLAD McZ in the 12th OVA spot makes me confused :D
