Fresh legs help propel Texas to Southwest Division Crown
#1

KTEX Sports Desk

There was some concern in Dallas, and around the league, how the Texas Renegades would fare this season fielding 5 rookies on the team, nearly a third of the starting roster.  The answer, it would seem, would be "quite well, actually."

The Texas Renegades are in the midst of a massive roster overhaul, calling up three forwards and two defenseman for this season.  While it was pretty well known around the league that Texas had a deep and talented prospect pool, you never know how things are going to go when these players step up to the big league.

Starting with the three forwards, a trio of S53 draft picks who all spent four years in the juniors and then came up together.  Detroit teammates Edward Williams and Burlock Sulfurgold as well as former St. Louis rival turned teammate, Eric Hudson. The S53 crew started the season on the same line together, although later they did move around a bit for tactical reasons.

First round pick (4OV) Edward Williams certainly didn't slow down when he started facing tougher competition.  He finished the season in a tie as the rookie points leader (Steve Harrington, Buffalo) with 35 points.  He also posted an impressive +24 rating and laid 114 hits, 3rd highest on the team. The S52 SJHML Rookie of the Year looks to add a big league RotY award to his mantle. Second round pick Burlock Sulfurgold (19OV) put up 25 points in a balanced fashion of 12 goals and 13 assists. Among the 12 goals were 2 tallies on the powerplay as well as a +4 rating and 88 hits.  Fellow second rounder, taken just two picks after Sulfurgold at 21st, Eric Hudson also chipped in 25 points, though skewed more towards helpers with 7 goals and 18 assists. The SJHML Defensive Forward of the Year two seasons ago posted a +4 rating, 23 hits and 64 blocked shots while seeing significant ice time on the Penalty Kill. Williams and Sulfurgold won multiple Four Star cups in Detroit, while Hudson made it to the Four Star Cup finals as a rookie. All three hope to bring a championship to Texas in the near future.

The two defenseman are both S54 draftees, called up after only 3 season in the Juniors. First overall pick Mikkel Asmus Sondegard and second round (18OV) Joseph Fantobens. While their youth was apparent at times during the season, they both more than held their own in the big leagues.  Sondegard notched 2 goals and 13 assists, posted a +11 rating with 39 hits and 50 shot blocks while seeing time on the second Penalty Kill unit.  Fantobens contributed 1 goal and 11 assists, posted a +5 rating, along with 40 hits and 42 shot blocks.

It will be exciting to see this young core continue to grow over the next few years.  This young roster could stay together for several season and do some serious damage.  The league should be on notice.  Starting in a few days we'll see how these young guns keep it going for the playoffs.  Texas will faceoff against the Chicago Syndicate in the second round.
