![]() SEASON 58 SMJHL DRAFTEE
Sekai Wollker is apparently waiting for the SMJHL draft quite eagerly. When reached out to at his home, he was very enthusiastic about the draft which is now just days away. He just wants to play... he’s ready. "I just want to play! I'm ready!"
The tall, energetic Icelandic defender has been hunkered down in Northern Canada for a few weeks now, arriving from his adopted country of Denmark and is maintaining a steady training regiment while waiting to be drafted in the SMJHL. Recently passing covid protocols, he is just gearing up to prove himself to a junior team. He’ll be ready to play when that first puck is dropped in whatever city chooses him. He just wants to play. ![]() Growing up in Iceland, there wasn’t much for the young lad to do while being raised up on his parents volcano farm, the work was seasonal at best, so he filled his time with learning the basic fundamentals of defence in the game he loved to play from a very early age. He attributes his older brother with helping him to develop the initial defensiveness awareness that may someday help to take Sekai to the SHL. His dream, which is now closer by the day. Getting into the North American Juniors will give him more exposure in the higher leagues but he knows that juniors is where he is today. Difficult to see is the future, always in motion it is so Sekai will play for today. The fresh air of Iceland, and the possibly the fumes from the volcanoes, grew him up big and tough. The 6 foot four rookie to the SMJHL weighs in at 200lbs already and is an absolute beast in front of the net. He’s hard to take down and once he gets going he’s extremely hard to to check. This is going to make him a force on any defensive line and if he can work on his hands and coordination a little bit more, he might be able to capitalize on breakouts as a formidable scoring presence as well. He wants it all, to speak the truth. ![]() He was noticed one day as a youth by an Atlantic-Talent agency scout from far away North America while he played a game of pond hockey. His skills and his presence on the rugged ice made the A-T scout realize that the kid had some great potential. Whether or not he is the chosen one remains to be determined, but the possibility cannot be ruled out. The kid has skills. Sekai was moved to a training facility in Denmark where he honed his defensive skills by playing for various Danish Elite squads. With every team he played for he was commended with being a great team player and his defensive abilities were just stellar. He could stop a two-man rush by himself and turn the puck back around with quick hands and assist on a goal in moves so fast it was like watching basketball. Just end-to-end continuity. His never-die attitude gave him the means to smash the record for most game-tying and game-winning goals in the Danish league he played in last season. He’s ready to bring that eliteness to a new league and a fresh start His awareness and quick feet made him a huge presence on both the power-play and any offensive rushes as well in his short years of playing so far. He hopes that he can prove himself quickly as a power play force. He admits he needs to keep training and developing before he’s among the elite, but he’s willing to put in the effort. When asked if had a preference to which team he would prefer to play his rookie season in juniors, Sekai was noncommittal with a smile. He will be happy to play for whichever team selects him in the upcoming draft on Sunday, January 31. Having no roots in North America, he’s quite willing to settle in the city of their choosing. He just wants to be given a chance to play, and that chance cometh right soon. ![]() Given the chance to say a few words, the Icelander just wanted the junior hockey world to know that he is ready. Ready to play. Ready to get going and be a part of a team again. He knows he will be a great attribute to any team and is still in the early stages of his career and still quite mold-able. He’s willing to just keep with the training and continuing to get better week after week while trying not to be a minimalist. Sekai knows that in order to get into the SHL, he’s got to keep the hard work and dedication improving. Sekai mentioned as well that in preparation for the big draft on Sunday, he’s going to keep it pretty chill. Run some errands, head down to the Tosche station for some power converter for a project and then settle down and watch the draft live from home. He wished it could be like other years where the big ceremony could be held with lots of people cheering, but understands that this year will be different. He’ll be on live-stream with his older brother as he waits for his name to be called. Hopefully by Monday he’ll be on a plane to his new home city and ready to get going with the new teammates. When inquired upon what his goals might be in his junior rookie season, he was very sure that he would make his presence felt on an individual stage but the team wins mean more to him than any personal accreditation. He wants to help the team to do well in anyway he can. Once he has a few seasons under his belt, he’ll go for the awards but that's a few years down the road and Sekai is looking forward to the journey. For final words, Sekai wanted to make sure he took the opportunity to wish all his fellow draftees a wonderful experience and hopefully they all get drafted to fun teams and enjoy their time in the juniors. He looks forward to the battles that will be fought as the SMJHL Season 58 gets underway. ![]() Sekai Wollker dreaming of a better future
