[FHN] S59 Fantasy: Season Wrap-up and some History
|
![]() Registered Cool guy ![]() This season the motivation hasn't quite grasped me enough to do a week by week, and I didn't push keven for a manual input of the draft rankings for each player. And, I'm not doing a deep dive on other media for proposed draft rankings. But, what I can do is offer some historical context. But first, let's look at the season. We gotta talk about Lyle Odelein III. It's just...INDEFENSIBLE how good his season was. I get frustrated when I try to come up with the right words to describe the magnitude to which he dominated this season and all other seasons in modern history. Perhaps we can find the words by providing some context. This season, Theo Morgan surprised the world by being the first player in SHL history to score 100 or more points. Granted, he had 16 more games than 50+ other seasons, but we cannot possibly downplay how good Morgan had to be to achieve this feat. One hundred points. This number put Theo Morgan at the top of the fantasy standings. He ended up with 509 points, more than any other player in any other season. Best of all time, edging out Lyle Odelein's 500 point record from last season. Wow! To break a record by 9 points! And 25 points higher than the next best player this season! Wow what a feat! Such an incred- Oh wait, Lyle Odelein scored 588 fantasy points this season. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. Is this starting to get into your brain how FUCKING absurd this is? One season ago, Lyle became the first player in SHL history to crack 500 points after Cassius Darrow missed it by a fraction. Theo Morgan 3 seasons ago was the first player to crack 400 points (to my limited knowledge) and he did it in 50 games. Lyle basically casually just took a fat shit on all of those accomplishments on his quest to see what 600 looks like. Seriously, run through this with me. Theo Morgan cracked 100 SHL points for the first time in history and broke the fantasy points record. Except he didnt break the record because Lyle was 80 points ahead of him. In terms of fantasy dominance, here's the last 4 seasons without Lyle's current record, points per game S59 Theo Morgan: 509 / 66 = 7.712 S58 Lyle Odelein: 500 / 66 = 7.575 S57 Cassius Darrow: 499 / 66 = 7.56 S56 Theo Morgan: 404 / 50 = 8.08 Here we see a clear dominance by Theo Morgan's S56 performance, but Theo's S59 performance is still dominant to the other seasons as well. Here's Lyle's S59 Performance S59 Lyle Odelein III: 588 / 66 = 8.909 Lyle accrued 10% more points per game than the historical best, and he did it for more games. Insane. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Now, a quick caveat about the history tab that you may enjoy. In the history tab, i have season averages for FHM fantasy points and ranking, as well as the last 3 season averages. Rankings seem helpful most of the time, but there's a peculiar way that ranking works that doesn't necessarily take into account how far ahead Lyle was during this season. Really, I should be ranking their averages as well. But anyway, you can see that FR Finn-Rhys holds a "Last 3 seasons average rank" of 3, meaning in the last 3 seasons, he averages finishing 3rd. This is actually the highest average currently, as Lyle Odelein's last 3 seasons puts him at 4, even though his last 3 seasons are 1st, 1st, and 10th. FR Finishing 4th, 3rd, and 2nd just puts him over the top. However, FR Finn-Rhys's last 3 season point average is 482 while Lyle's is 506. Almost 25 point difference there. So anyway, I thought that was neat. Biggest Winners Without looking at draft rank data, I can only go with my gut on this but here's some guys that ended up doing better than we thought. Lyle Odelein III: I just wrote like 500 words on this. Clear winner here. Even as many picked him 1st overall, no one could have predicted how many points he would actually get you. Theo Morgan: I did not see many people pick Theo up early, and those that did won't have been sorry about it. Theo played a 1st place season in any other season and grabbing 500 points would easily put anyone into the top 4 if they picked the rest of their team well enough. I would hazard a guess to say that Theo might have been better for many teams than Lyle, due to his lower draft position. Without actual data in my hands, its hard to tell. Historically, Theo finished 8th, 40th, and 1st the previous 3 seasons. That 40th season really puts a hurt on his draft value for many, but finishing 2nd this year should put away any concern the doubters have. The only question for S60 is: Will he see the same ice time? Nicholas Owens: It may be unsurprising that a buffalo player finds themselves a winner, but Owens still managed an impressive number of blocks for a team with such a high possession rate, as well as 18 goals and 39 assists, better than a lot of forwards. Owens is part of the young group of lower-50s players entering their prime, but Owens was only mentioned in half of the groups overall. FR Finn-Rhys: I consider this a win for FR. There was some uncertainty with him moving from Edmonton to New England. Edmonton is a bit more put together and FR has historically picked up a lot of points from goals and assists. New being an atlantic team pretty much tells you all you need to know. But, FR put up 3rd most shots blocked in the league as well as 33 points on the ice with plenty of shots and hits. FR ended up 5th overall, which is maybe below some expectations (I took him 1st over Lyle and I will now kill myself). Minnesota Monarchs: Like the real Minnesota Team, and Minnesota itself, I don't think anyone expected a good performance from them, but here they are! Minnesota was picked up in just 2 groups, but finished with 410 points, putting them at 18th overall and 4th best goaltending behind Hamilton, Toronto, and Texas. Minnesota faced more shots than most teams but managed to walk away with 30 wins and 5 shutouts. I think that's pretty impressive. Hamilton Steelhawks: Yes okay, I understand. It's not exactly "Winning" for Hamilton at this point. They just always win. But, the Goaltending for the Steelhawks actually finished 3rd overall, behind Lyle and Morgan. That's kind of insane. If you had picked Hamilton in the first round, you'd be completely justified. Hell, even 1st overall wouldn't have hurt you much if not for Lyle being an insane person. San Francisco Pride: Similar to the monarchs, the Pride took big steps this year on their way to the playoffs. They faced 3rd most shots in the league and walked away with 26 wins and 3 shutouts. This puts them at 6th best Goaltending, and only 1 group had them selected. I dont know if it helped them at all, but it turned out to be a better pick than buffalo, and I'm imagining that they had picked SFP after BUF was taken. Biggest Losers Without having access to much draft data, these are basically guesses too. Players I, and many others, expected more out of Karl Krashwagen: After Karl's MVP season and finishing just barely behind Lyle last season, Krash was picked up early by a lot of players. Unfortunately he fell all the way to 43rd, with only 22 goals and 33 assists. Maybe he will pull a Morgan and place 8th next season. Tom Fiddler: Just because I know my own season pretty well and have often heard my name thrown around as a last pick hail mary, i finished 71st overall. 10 goals behind my previous season and fewer shots blocked. Monkey D Luffy: ASG aside, Luffy finished 20 ranks below his previous 2 seasons and well below his average. He was picked up in just about every group, though I'm not certain how early. I would put Luffy on the cusp of being a loser here, but finishing 53rd is usually not good enough to be worth a fantasy pick and still win. Kaspars Claude: Claude was similarly also picked up in almost every group. When you've got 2 defensemen, you really can't have one of them finishing 55th. Julio Tokolosh: After a stellar couple of seasons finishing top 15, Tokolosh had a massive lapse this season finishing 57th. Julio was picked in every single group, so I'm sensing a lot of you are pretty peeved about this. Michael Scarn: Picked in almost every group, I would assume 2nd forward at least, and finished 81st. Without looking, I'd guess he saw less ice time than usual. Cassius Darrow: Darrow was picked in all groups but 1, but finished 50th overall. Again, you need your defensemen to finish a lot better than that, and darrow has historically been a great earner. However, as Seattle improves, Darrow sees fewer shots to block. They're in an uncanny valley of "Not bad but not elite" for fantasy. Fantasy usually abhors lukewarm teams. Ruslan Zaporozhets: I saw a lot of mentions of this name, and indeed almost every group had him selected. However, he ended up finishing 68th overall. Anyway, that's about 1500 words or so, here's a data dump. You've got my respect. Also, after taking a break for S59, I'm in a much better position to assemble the draft data for S60 and once again provide you with more fantasy data to sink your teeth into.
