Hello SHL, today I will be presenting my deep dive where I look at all 4 members of the Koivu family, and how they look in the SHL right now.
1. Paul Koivu - Left Wing - Paul Koivu is the first player of the Koivu family, from the user Briedaqueduc, whose last player was defenseman Simon LeBlanc. Paul went 2nd overall in the SMJHL draft in S61, as Anchorage traded up in the draft to take him. He is still on the team now, playing a huge role in the roster and being part of the leadership group. In the SHL draft, Koivu was taken 8th overall by Manhattan, who also made a trade in order to snag him. However, Koivu would never get to see the ice for the Rage, as he was traded to New England in a deal that involved Jonathan Granstrom and some picks going to Manhattan. Koivu is a well rounded forward who specializes in being a sort of jack of all trades type of player who can contribute across all two hundred feet of the ice. He just recently won the Brandon Holmes award for the SMJHL best defensive forward. 2. Binko Koivu - Right Defense - Binko is the second oldest of the Koivu brothers, and his user is goldenglutes, who is the Co-GM of the Atlanta Inferno. Glutes' last player was defenseman turned forward Guy Zheng, who in his SHL career played for New England, Hamilton, Atlanta, Calgary and Toronto. Binko, just like Paul, was taken 2nd overall in his SMJHL draft (S63), by the Colorado Raptors. He has played only one season in juniors so far, but is part of an impressive Colorado team that had a solid regular season in S63. In the SHL draft, he was selected 31st overall by the Atlanta Inferno due to being their Co-GM. 3. Jolmi Koivu - Right Defense - Jolmi is the oldest of the three Koivu brothers in this current SMJHL rookie crop, and his user is the most long term user of the four, Good_Ole_Kimmy. Kimmy's former players are Andrew Martin, Noah Andros and Lonnie O'Donoghue, all of whom were steady presences on the teams they played for. Like Paul, Jolmi plays a very balanced style, making sure he is capable in all departments. He was selected 35th overall by the Colorado Raptors, joining brother Binko there. 4. Ricky Koivu - Right Wing - Ricky is the second youngest of the five Koivu brothers, and, along with Jolmi, is one of the Koivus in this current rookie draft class. He was just taken 12th overall by the Anchorage Armada in the S64 SMJHL draft, and his intelligent, defensively oriented style of play will suit him well when he eventually attempts to make it to the SHL. 5. Wide Peepo Happy 3 Koivu - Left Defense - Finally, Wide Peepo Happy 3 Koivu comes in as the youngest Koivu in this draft. His user, Hallsy, has had many players on the site before so great things are expected of him on this player. Similarly to Ricky, Wide Peepo Happy 3 plays a solid, shutdown game. He was drafted 18th overall by the St. Louis Scarecrows, and with his skillset is expected to make the SHL before too long. We will continue to monitor how the brothers progress in their careers, but there is a strong sentiment that all five of them will be able to have strong careers in the juniors, and can very realistically have successful careers in the big league as well. For clarity, I know there's an O'Koivu in this class now too but we don't claim them. (604 words)
