It has been a rough start to the season for the Calgary Dragons. Eight games into season 64, the Dragons sit second from the bottom of the league table and have managed just two wins so far. Several blowout losses have fans on edge, but some solid play in other games has brought back some hope.
After splitting the opening games of the season with a 6 – 2 loss to Baltimore and taking a 5-4 victory against Buffalo, the Dragons entered a skid losing to Winnipeg 5 – 4, Texas 8 – 2 and 6 -3, and then getting shut out by Philly 4 – 0 before succumbing to bitter rivals Edmonton 3 – 1. Last night’s game against Winnipeg proved more fruitful as rookie Duncan Mackenzie led the team to a 4 – 2 victory over the Aurora. Winnipeg opened the scoring in the first frame after Bas O’Bigbers hammered home a shot set up by Parker Smeb and Joorgustraad DuBolk. Raised voices were heard in the Dragon locker room in the first intermission as Captain Luukas Lilja fired up his team. The words worked as the second period was all Dragons. The first line got down to business three minutes in as Veteran Esa Parmborg sanpped home his third of the season, set up by Brennan Kennedy Jr and Barry Batsbak. Just three minutes later Duncan Mackenzie set up shop in front of the Aurora net and smashed home a rebound off a Chris Goodname shot. Defenceman Aumy Jr also had an assist on the play. The period was capped of with the first goal of the season for Brennan Kennedy Jr as he scored on a goal set up by the magical hands of Alexis Saint-Michel. Mackenzie was also credited with an assist on the goal that put the Dragons up 3 – 1. The Dragons were slow to start the third and the Aurora took full advantage. 16 seconds into the third period Dwayne Gretzky put in his third of the season from Rotzbua and Marston while the Winnipeg crowd began to anticipate the comeback. It was not to be though as Calgary tightened up the defense and at the seven minute mark Richard Lafleur scored his first of the campaign off Grogu Mandosson’s third assist of the year to put the Dragons back into the driver’s seat. There were some anxious moments near the end of the period as the Dragons ran into penalty trouble, including a brief 2 man advantage for the Aurora with Nystrom and Johansson both in the box, but Calgary came through unscathed and managed to come out with a much needed victory. The three stars of the game were *Duncan Mackenzie (CGY), **Bas O’Bigbers (WPG) and ***Alexis Saint-Michel (CGY). It is a rebuilding season for the Dragons, but expectations are higher on the team than to sit in the basement of the league. The team is hoping this win can spark a bit of a streak in the coming games. Calgary continues their road trip on the 22nd, heading into Montreal before heading cross country for a game the next night in Seattle. The road trip will continue into New Orleans and San Francisco before the Dragons will finally return to the Big Parm on the 29th to face Minnesota. Winnipeg Aurora
