Hello SHL!
We are (after some brief miscommunication and last minute hustle) participating in a cross-league charity event you may have already heard about in a couple of the other leagues! Here is the information (kindly provided to us by our friends organizing this cross-league initiative), along with our own plan for participation! WHO WE ARE SUPPORTING?
On February 24th of this year Russia invaded Ukraine, further escalating the conflict between the two countries started in 2014 with the Ukrainian Revolution. The invasion was justified by the false claims Ukraine was governed by neo-Nazis. Just minutes after Vladimir Putin gave a public address announcing a special military operation, missiles hit Ukraine. For the past 7 months now, we have seen photos and videos of the war raging on but with this charity event we want to focus on the people who have been most affected. The result of this war is Europe’s largest refugee crisis since World War II, affecting millions of families. It’s estimated that around 8 million people had been displaced within Ukraine by late May and nearly that same amount have fled the country as of October. This charity event we will be supporting the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and more specifically, we are highlighting their work happening in Ukraine. UNICEF works all across the world “to ensure that every child is healthy, educated, protected, and respected”. With the current crisis occurring in Ukraine, UNICEF has increased their capacity in delivering aid to hundreds of thousands of children that have been affected. Children, specifically, are the least responsible for current events and yet they are made to suffer the most from its consequences. Now, more than ever, the children and families impacted by war need our support. To learn more about UNICEF and all the work that they do you can visit their website here Additionally, to learn more about the support they’re providing in Ukraine, you can read this article. AND
Given the timing of our charity event, in addition to supporting UNICEF through our donate page we have agreed to also allow users the option to donate towards a Hurricane Ian relief fund. Given our focus on supporting children in need, we’ve decided to promote a Hurricane Ian relief fund from Save The Children. Hurricane Ian completely decimated parts of Florida, especially Fort Myers Beach and Naples. Hurricane Ian is now the deadliest hurricane in the continental United States since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Over 101 people have been announced as dead due to Hurricane Ian, with over 60% of the deaths caused by drowning. This unexpected tragedy will have many families misplaced and thousands of folks in Charlotte County, Florida will be without electricity for months due to one of the electrical substations there being completely submerged underwater. You can learn more about how they’re working to help those affected by Hurricane Ian here. WHAT'S THE TIMELINE?
In the next day or so, we will be creating a Charity sub-section, which will serve as a landing spot for all of the information, auctions, and other charity-related topics. We will also have more information on prizes, auction items, and links for you to actually make donations! The drive itself will begin Monday, October 24th, and will wrap up Monday, November 7th. WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW?
As in past years, we will have some league-wide donation incentives (the charity cards are ready!), including prizes that will be raffled off. In addition to that, though, we will also be having auctions! If you’ve participated in a charity drive in any of the other leagues before, you’re probably already familiar with this, but we will be taking “donations” in the form of things you’d like to auction off for other users to bid on. (Some examples might include player signatures, guest appearances on podcasts, media articles on a chosen topic, the name of your team’s arena, etc. We encourage you to get creative with it!) We hope that these auctions will give everybody the chance to participate even if they aren’t able to contribute financially. If you have something you think would be cool to auction off, please reach out to me on discord (Jess#1802); I will be coordinating this portion of the shindig. Go forth and brainstorm! On behalf of SHL Head Office, Jess
