Draft Dives: An Interview with Mit Wobet – RD Newfoundland Berserkers.
By Helmis Reinhard My name is Helmis Reinhart, I have been tasked by The Simletic to follow Mit Wobet on his upcoming draft into the SHL. Mit has been a stand-out SMJHL Prospect for the Newfoundland Berserkers racking up 25 points during his rookie year at the RD position. He got off to a slow start but quickly improved and become less of a defensive liability as the season went on and was part of a semi-final playoff push where the Zerks ultimately fell short to the S69 Champions QCC. I was able to sit down for a brief interview with Mit this off-season. HR: Mit, first and foremost, thank you for taking your time out of your busy training regimen. How are you feeling about your future and the upcoming SHL draft? MW: Of course, Helmis. I’ve been in contact with quite a few teams. There’s been a lot of promising conversations and just when I think I have an idea of where I am going to go, I have another conversation that changes my mind. It’s been a real whirlwind. HR: So, are you looking to stay down in Newfoundland for the full 4 seasons? Or are you open to being called up early at some point if needed? MW: If it's something that would benefit the team, I wouldn't mind being called up. On the flip side, I am enjoying my time with the Berserkers and wouldn't mind finishing out a full four seasons here. We have a great squad being built here and I would be remised if I didn’t say I am eager to be a part of it. But I also understand what a career maker it could be to be called up early and perform well in the big leagues. I was also told that Patty comes to my house with a chainsaw if I don't finish all four seasons so... there’s that. HR: Well, that sounds… terrifying… Have you given any thought of where you would like to end up? MW: It may sound cliché but I’m trying to not worry so much about where I end up and more about improving my abilities to be the most complete player to whoever wants to take a chance on a kid from Jacksonville. I’ll go anywhere; a rebuild, contender, drenched in an established culture, or one that needs a kickstart. I’m going to give everything I got. HR: Speaking of Jacksonville, have you heard anything from your hometown team the Barracudas? MW: I have not. I don’t think I am on their radar. HR: I think it’s safe to say your start to the season was lackluster. What have you done to improve? MW: I was a big defensive liability I will admit, and I couldn’t seem to hit the red side of a barn shooting-wise. But I stayed in the rink every night, even after games when I could. I think that I’ve done everything I could, and it showed through in my game to where I am a projected first-rounder in the draft. But I am just going to keep my nose to the grindstone and become the best I can be. HR: Are you hoping to be drafted with Shorsey? MW: Are you serious? I am not here to talk about Shorsey… That squirrelly little prick. At this point in the interview Mit started to get a little tense. I suggested we take a little quick break and grab a drink to relax, I suggested bourbon that I had. Mit declined, telling me that was poison to his Temple de la Mit. He had water instead. HR: Okay… So anyway, back to where we were here. What is going to stand out to you during your rookie year here at Newfoundland? MW: Of course, our deep playoff run will live forever in my memory. But it was the comradery I developed with everyone in the locker room that was unmatched. I’ve been on a lot of teams growing up, but I can easily say this has been the closest group I’ve been a part of. HR: A lot of experts have you going 13th overall to Edmonton. Of course, we all know everyone has a plan until a wrench gets thrown into the cogs of the draft machine, but would you be happy with that selection? MW: My personal goal was being a top 10 prospect which in this case would mean I only got top 15 which is a failure in my eyes. However, if you’re asking me how I feel about the team then I will refer to my other answer and say that it doesn’t matter where I go. Wherever I go to will be happy they selected me. HR: Another rumor floating around out there is Toronto selecting you and Carpet back-to-back. How would you feel about playing in front of Carpet for theoretically your entire career? MW: Rhett is an amazing netminder and comes from an undeniably legendary lineage of goaltenders. He and Tummy are easily the best One-Two punch in the crease in the Juniors. I think it would be amazing to be drafted with him, not only for me personally and my chemistry with him but just to have two Zerks go back-to-back in the top 5 would just be amazing. HR: Thanks Mit. I wish you luck in the draft and will be seeing you around. MW: No problem, thank you Helmis. From there Mit went back toward Newfoundland’s practice rink to work on his shooting accuracy from the blue line. It appears the only thing this man knows is hockey. A lot of people claim they eat, sleep, and breathe the hobbies they love. But Mit truly does that. I wouldn’t be surprised if he woke up in the morning and ate pucks in a bowl of milk. I think it’s safe to say Mit is going in the first round, but in the top 10 or not like he said was his goal we will see on Sunday. |
