The top of any draft is the easy part for most GMs and scouts, and while beyond that is where they make their money, it can be fun to judge the players at the top of the draft way way too early in the season. We’ve seen the draftees this season play, at most, 10 games between the preseason and the start of the regular season, so the conclusions here will totally be reasonable and not at all crazy given the time frame.

Vancouver Whalers - Bob Wehadababyitsaboy

Off to a strong start, our first overall pick in this class is doing well for the Whalers. 4 points between the preseason and the start of the regular season, Bob is having a strong offensive start for a defenseman. Averaging over 24 minutes a night, he’s living up to his billing with a 6-1 takeaway to giveaway ratio early in the year. A good defensive and game rating as well is helping Bob be a contributor on the 2-1-0 Whalers.

Colorado Raptors - Oliver Castillon

Castillon is having one of the strongest season starts among our top 5 with 6 points early here. 5 points in the preseasons followed by another 1 to start the regular season, he’s doing well playing around 17 minutes a night. Despite being drafted as a center, he’s only taken 12 faceoffs so far, but is winning them at a 2-1 rate so far. He’s been consistent in terms of his ratings, sticking in the mid 60s so far. If there was a spot for Castillon to improve, it would likely be on his giveaway to takeaway rate with a 6-5 giveaway rate. Nothing crazy, but just a small spot that could be improved.

St. Louis Scarecrows - Dominik Winters

Winters has yet to register a point in the regular season, but also St. Louis has played the fewest games in the league so far (tied with Nevada). He’s playing big minutes early, with over 19 minutes per game. His faceoffs are a spot for improvement with a 45.9% rate (56 wins, 66 losses) and his takeaways are decent at 6-4 takeaways to giveaways. His defensive rating is one of the strongest in the league (tied for 5th), but it remains to be seen if this is because of the one fewer games played.

Great Falls Grizzlies - Levin Schattenaxt

Schattenaxt is having ever so slightly a better start than Castillon here with 7 assists through the preseason and start of the regular season playing a similar 17 minutes a night for the Grizzlies. A 3-1 takeaway rate and strong ratings across the board have been catching eyes in each game that the Grizzlies have played so far this season. He’s going to be one to watch if he can get rolling for a Great Falls team that is off to a hot start.

Regina Elk - Just-to-Buy My-Love

It is interesting that the two players playing center out of the top 5 have extremely similar stat lines to start the year. My-Love had 5 points in the preseason, 0 in the regular season so far, and averaging over 21 minutes a night for the Elk thus far. With more minutes comes more opportunities to have giveaways and he has plenty to start the year. An 11-4 giveaway to takeaway rate is nothing to write home positively about and it should be a spot for My-Love to improve over the course of the season. Faceoffs are another spot to improve if he continues to stick at center, winning just 40.4% of his faceoffs. He has solid ratings across the board so far in the mid 60s like Castillon, and it shows why he should be expected to improve as the season progresses.
