S71 SMJHL PT #2 - Season Preview
#31

The Newfoundland Berserkers finished their preseason going 4-2-1 (Tied for 4th) with 28 GF(5th) and 27 GA(8th). There has been plenty of talk surrounding this team and if they have want it takes to defend last seasons Championship run. Here are 3 players we feel could have an impact on just that:

1. John Hopoate - 7 GP: 5 G, 7 A
Hopoate is entering his 4th season with Team NL and is coming off a career year that saw him put up 82 points (33G, 49A). Keep an eye on him this season to increase on those totals and be a pivotal force for the Berserkers.

2. Rhett Carpet - 7 GP: 4-2-1, 3.59 GAA, 0.887%
Carpet did not have the greatest preseason, but Newfoundland feels he is ready to take over the #1 spot this season. Going into his 3rd season, look for him to rebound after a dismall Season 70 and carry this team back to the Cup Finals.

3. Chris Walsh - 7 GP: 1 G, 1 A
After missing the draft, Walsh entered Free Agency and Newfoundland was quick to jump on the Newfie Boy. While the expectations for scoring isn't high, they do have high hopes that Walsh will use his size and power to help set up in front of the net and be a nusiance for other teams goalies.

The Maine Timber cruised to a 6-1-0 finish in the preseason, showing why they were in the finals last season and why they are going to be in the mix to make it again this season. With a veteran outfit of skaters who couldn't finish the job this past season, the Timber are a team on a mission. It is championship or bust for this team.

The first key piece for this team is Center and Captain Peter Tingle. A leader on and off the ice, Tingle can dish assists like a man possessed while still being up to find his own shots as well as anyone.

The second key piece for this team is Right Wing Damien Hirano, an avaricious and accurate shooter who knows how to feed his teammates good looks.

Last but not least for key pieces is first round draft pick Goalie Bernard Lodge. Lodge played well in his minutes as a DFA for Maine in the playoffs, playing a key part in the run to the finals, especially in the series against Carolina. However, that was as the second option in net, so time will tell if Lodge can sustain this success as the leading man in net over the course of a full season.

My team the Kelowna Knights, and despire our record, it is safe to safe we have a positive attitude and mindset that we can be one of the top teams this season and possibly have a deep playoff run if all the cards fall correctly. We have a young team, so TPE accural should help us down the stretch!

Our big 3 is:

1.Activity Check - There is nothing better than to have a top goalie as the last line of defense for your team, as a great goalie can take you far if your team is not so good. RoY candidate in net, this is the dude you want, and has largely come out of nowhere,

2. Activity Check - Did I mention this guy? Legend between the pipes, and will only improve as Kelowna does.

3. Kelowna's GMs- Snussu and Artermis - legendary GMs, and Artermis only drafts on VIBES alone - which is more than your GM and is a legend.

Dee fence is a notable not goal scorer. the fact he scored a goal in his very first game is a very bad omen for the team, as that means that this season will be inverted from expectations. Dee Fence's skills are in Dee and Fence not O and Fence. That being said players such as David Doug being able to make up for Dee Fence's clear Dee ficiencies should be able to more then cover for it. additionally with Kay Lee and Kyle Baretto in between the pipes I have full confidence that every game can and will go to shootouts. Offense on the other hand leads a lot to be desired for, unless you are looking for a player who's applied TPE is offensive to the eyes, in which case Dee Fence is your guy. In all The St. Louis Scarecrows will be a defensive .500 Team to be on the lookout for this season!

Well, it was certainly no surprise that the St. Louis Scarecrows weren't exactly the greatest team of all time during the Simulation Major Junior Hockey League's seventy first preseason, finishing bottom three in the standings over that seven game stretch. A few of the highest point scorers on the team include a quintet of four forwards: right wingers Peter Sandstrom and Lasse Zeigler coming in 1st and tied for 3rd, and centers Crazy Tomato and Todd Bowers coming in 2nd and tied for 3rd as well. Defensive point scorers seemed to be few and far between, though those who contribute more on the back end of the ice would be Antoine Gauthier and rookie Artturi Lappalainen, both with a neutral plus minus rating. Penalties seemed to be a big issue for the Scarecrows, with the team averaging nearly 9 minutes spent on the penalty kill per game. That certainly isn't a recipe for success, especially when your penalty killers are on the younger and more inexperienced side of things.

The Vancouver Whalers  Whalers are a promising team heading into the season, with good young talent mixed with some older players that some may consider veterans in the SMJHL. They're starting off strong to begin the season, but every player on the team must step up in their own ways for the Whalers to shine and prevail above the rest. I want to highlight three players that are crucial to their success. First is Klaes Ashford, a centerman who's been with the Whalers for 4 seasons. Having an elite center produce as much Ashford does is important to the success of the team. The next player I want to highlight is Bellamy Blake. Blake is a LD that puts up a ton of point production while also staying steady on the back end, and these types of defenseman are what teams need to win games. The last player is Inactive Forever, a young LW that's developing into a star winger for the Whalers. Forever taking a step in their development this season will be big for this team.
