Season 68 Redraft 1 RD
#1
(This post was last modified: 06-23-2023, 09:14 AM by spidey. Edited 5 times in total.)

Here we go with Season 67 of the SHL ReDraft!  This had the makings of a very talented draft class with a lot of members who are now well known names in the SHL only a few seasons into their career.  We will dive into top 3 players per position, TPE leaders list and average TPE per active player and finally we will look at the SHL ReDraft picking by current best TPE in the same hockey position selected at each pick of the draft.  We will only ReDraft the first round.

As always I am only going to utilize players currently on SHL rosters but dug into anyone who was drafted early enough and found if they are inactive or retired and what position they played.

TOP 3 PER POSITION:

Goalie:

August Von Hecht - 1060 TPE - TBB
Honestly we are only going to do one goalie.  August is a king among kings as far as season 67 SHL goalies go and really the only one worth speaking of.  He has done the work and Tampa is reaping the benefits, well they will be soon as their team builds around him.  He reached the 1000 TPE club which does not happen often for most goalies and continues to make good strides.

Defense:

Nevek Kove - 1244 TPE - MIN
The first overall pick at this draft has done well to live up to his draft position.  The highest earner among defenders in this year’s draft and third in earned TPE out of all players.  Minnesota struck gold when picking up Nevek as he rapidly develops into a franchise defender.

Antonio Fluss - 1226 TPE - PHI
While Nevek is number one, breathing down his neck is Antonio.  He only sits 18 TPE behind Kove and has done everything needed to provide a major boost to Philadelphia’s back end.  Just like Kove he is developing into a franchise defender and will continue to be utilized in a strong Forge team.

Hodor - 1208 TPE - TEX
Hold the door!  This pick is another defensive GEM and part of the 1200 Top of the class TPE Club.  Texas grabbed Hodor just a little before Antonio with the 6th pick and I am sure they are happy with the player they were able to add to their roster.  Another amazing find in a talented draft class.

Right Wing

Axel Kirby - 1224 TPE - LAP
While the Right Wing in this draft class is not as deep as the other skill positions Alex Kirby is as good as anyone else in this draft class.  Joining the 1200 TPE club, Kirby is showing he was worth the 7th overall pick the Dragon’s invested into him.

Alexi Piastri - 1124 TPE - MIN
A little behind the top of the draft class but doing well to keep pace is Alexi Piastri.  He has done everything asked of him in Minnesota and as an end of the first round draft pick; he has provided phenomenal value for the position he plays and timing he was selected.

Raiya Rabinov - 913 TPE - BAL
Raiya will be the lowest value in the top 3 picks, but as for a third round draft steal she provides amazing value not only for her pick but her position.  THERE ARE ONLY 3 ACTIVE RIGHT WINGERS!  There were 3 others who were selected above her that have retired or gone on to become inactive.  A phenomenal steal in this draft.

Center:

Adam Prpich - 1274 TPE - LAP
MR. TPE, Adam leads the entire draft class in TPE earned, he has done everything to become the franchise forward for the Panthers and proving they made the right decision in making him a top 5 pick.  Adam will continue to develop his talents as he continues to strive to be the best in this class.

Jack St. Clair - 1264 TPE - EDM
For mock draft purposes Adam sits above Jack, but I am sure Jack happily let’s Adam know he was picked first at second overall.  I am also sure Edmonton has no complaints with Jack’s development as he is only 10 TPE behind the draft’s leader and sits second overall.

Paul Peterson - 1230 TPE - WIN
The third center selected is also the third one on this list.  Sitting at an impressive 1230 TPE good for forth best in the draft class Paul is another star in development.  Winnipeg managed to grab an amazing player that will dominate in the SHL for years to come.

Left Wing:

Bobby McGinnis - 1217 TPE - HAM
The first left winger off the board turned out to be the best one at this time.  Bobby has been doing an amazing job of keeping up with the top guys in this class and finding a way into the 1200 TPE Club.  Hamilton made good use of their 5th overall pick.

Jacques Hammer - 1181 TPE - NEW
Just below the 1200 TPE club is Jacques Hammer, but he sits number 2 among left wingers in earned TPE.  Selected 14th overall as the second left wing off the boards, while positionally perfect, I am sure pick wise a few teams earlier wish they had a second chance at acquiring Hammer.

Dusty Rhodes - 1160 TPE -NOLA
Dusty was an early second round pick (actually the first pick in the second round), in my mind that makes him as good as a late first round pick.  He was the 5th left winger selected, clearly he should have been picked much earlier as Edmonton at the draft found a gem in this player.

ReDRAFT!

Round 1

1.) Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs - Nevek Kove – 1244 TPE - Defense

With the first overall pick Minnesota went defense, while Nevek is not the top earner in the class he has all the makings of a franchise piece as he continues to develop.  The did not make a bad decision when selecting Nevek.

REDRAFT: Nevek Kove – 1244 TPE – NO MOVEMENT

There is no better defender, earning TPE wise, in this draft class.  While not top earner, Nevek is the top earning defender.  This was a fantastic pick by Minnesota to build from the crease out.

2.) Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard - Jack St. Clair – 1264 TPE – Center

Edmonton struck gold with a fantastic addition for their roster with this pick.  Jack seems to have everything a team could want as he develops into one of the stars in the SHL world.

REDRAFT: Adam Prpich – 1274 TPE – UP 2 SPOTS

I am sure Edmonton is not losing any sleep over there “missed opportunity” here.  But the ReDraft means we grab the best player TPE wise per position and Adam is the best player/center in the entire draft.  This would only strength the Blizzard if we did this move.

3.) Platoon Baltimore Platoon - Daniel Swift – Retired – Right Wing

I clearly do not know the whole story, but Daniel was clearly a highly sought after prospect, but an early retirement means 5 seasons later there is no return for the Platoon with this high pick which is very disappointing. To make matters worse, no one else inside the top 9 picks grabbed a player with less than 1200 TPE, this is a big miss.

REDRAFT: Axel Kirby – 1224 TPE – Right Wing – UP 4 SPOTS

I know if the Platoon could do it over they would happily make Alex Kirby the 3rd overall pick.  Grabbing a top end talent and future franchise piece.  Going from 0 – 1200+ TPE would be a huge up swing for the Platoon.

4.) Panthers Los Angeles Panthers - Adam Prpich – 1274 TPE – Center

The Panthers can feel like they won the draft at this point with this pick alone.  Adam is a head above everyone else right now and the Panthers made a fantastic selection in grabbing him in the top 5.

REDRAFT: Jack St. Clair – 1264 TPE – DOWN 2

With Adam gone in the redraft, we swap places with the top 2 centers and Jack falls 2 places and if I were the Panthers I wouldn’t cry over spilled milk as this can be considered a win in and of itself.  Jack is a fantastic talent deserving a top 2 or top 4 pick.

5.) Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Bobby McGinnis -1217 TPE – Left Wing

Among the wings the left was clearly the deeper of the two sides of center.  Bobby McGinnis was part of the 1200 TPE club and has done well to earn his spot in the top 5 of this draft.  He is a start and future franchise piece as he continues to build on his own legacy.

REDRAFT: Bobby McGinnis – 1217 TPE – NO MOVEMENT

Hamilton made a great pick here.  If their need was a winger not only did they grab the best left winger they grabbed the second best winger period in this draft, and with so few wingers panning out it has become true Top 5 value with a top 5 pick well done!

6.) Renegades Texas Renegades – Hodor – 1208 TPE – Defense

Hodor has become a top 4 defender for the Renegades and will likely top out as their top 2 during his peak.  He has done extremely well to pace the top earners in this class reaching that 1200 TPE Club.

REDRAFT: Antonio Flusso – 1226 TPE – UP 2 SPOTS

If we can do it over, we would see Texas grab Antonio, which is no slight to Hodor, just Antonio earns the move up with the little extra work he has put in.  Antonio is the second highest TPE among defenders and 4th highest in this class making this pick look even better than the original selection.

7.) Dragons Calgary Dragons - Axel Kirby – 1224 TPE – Right Wing

The Dragons grabbed a future star at 7th overall and one of the few active right wingers at this point in Alex’s career.  He has done an amazing job keeping himself above the majority of his draft class alumni.  Unfortunately for the Dragons at this point in the redraft Axel wouldn’t be available.

REDRAFT: Alexi Piastri - 1124 TPE – UP 11 SPOTS

In the redraft Alexi becomes the first sub 1200 TPE player to be selected, luckily for Alexi the weaker right side has opened a spot for him to be selected early.  For the Dragons and eventually the Panthers, this is a slight down grade, but you are still getting an incredibly talented player.

8.) Forge Philadelphia Forge - Antonio Flusso – 1226 TPE – Defense

The Forge got an amazing player here at 8th overall.  Value wise, amazing, 5th highest TPE for all players, 2nd highest defender.  At 8th this is a great pick up for the Forge.  But in our ReDraft he has already been selected.

REDRAFT: Hodor – 1208 TPE – DOWN 2 SPOTS

In another draft day switch of positions Hodor is the new selection for the Forge.  Honestly this is still a great pick for the Forge acquiring at 1200 TPE defender who is trending very well.  A small switch in position and Hodor is still in a great place.

9.) Aurora Winnipeg Aurora - Paul Peterson – 1230 TPE – Center

I am still trying to understand how Paul Peterson fell this far, looking at everything now.  The 4th highest TPE earner in this draft, 3rd among centers.  The guy has been a machine, well everyone else’s loss becomes gains for Winnipeg as they get a franchise piece all the way down at 9th overall.

REDRAFT: Paul Peterson – 1230 TPE – NO MOVEMENT

Wow!  There must have not been a real need for Centers at this draft, Winnipeg keeps there man even in the redraft and Peterson stays within the top 10.  Fantastic pick by Winnipeg.

10.) Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (via MAN) - Sean Davies – 983 TPE – Defense

In the real draft Sean is the first active player selected that has not broken 1200 TPE, hey it had to happen eventually.  Sean is still a very good defender that will fill in the roll of a top 4 defender and could climb into the top 2 if he continues to develop.

REDRAFT: Isaac Forty-One - 1190 TPE – UP 2 SPOTS

If they could do it over, they still would not have a 1200 TPE player, but they would get one that is incredibly close.  Isaac would be a big boost to the Wolfpack’s back end and should be taking over a top 2 role on his roster.  This would have been a significant boost to an already incredibly talented team.

11.) Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs (via MTL) - Brendan Laroux – 877 TPE – Defense

We have another defender that was arguably selected a bit early.  Brendan while a serviceable defender looks to be best case a top 2 but at his current projection will top out at top 4 capabilities in the SHL.  This isn’t a bad pick but a bit of a reach.

REDRAFT: Chuchichäschtli Zopf - 1053 TPE – UP 25 SPOTS

While Zopf is not on the same level as the top defenders of this draft he is clearly better then his late second round value of the real draft.  Zopf would be a big upgrade for Minnesota if they could redo this pick.  The truth is they probably should have been looking for a forward at this time with what we know now.

12.) Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via SFP) - Isaac Forty-One – 1190 - Defense

After two misses on defense, the Platoon struck gold with the final elite earner with the defenders in the draft.  Issacs is not quite the same level as 1st overall pick Kove, but he is damn close.  He has all the makings of a top 2 defender and with continued hard work could be the best one in this class.

REDRAFT: Sean Davis - 983 TPE – DOWN 2 SPOTS

Another draft day swap!  This is actually incredible, and each of these draft day swaps are within 2 picks of one another which is even more incredible showing the scouting teams were pretty close to players positional values.  Losing Isaac will hurt, gaining Sean will help with that sting.

13.) Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Bohdan Jarovsky – Retired – Center

Bohdan being selected in the top 15 will go down as a big miss for the Barracuda, I am sure they had the utmost faith he would become a top 6 center in the SHL and showed well during his SMJHL days.  Still, they have nothing to show for this pick 5 season later.

REDRAFT: Meta Knight - 1176 TPE – 24 SPOTS

Imagine a Barracuda roster with Meta Knight and Bruno!  Man, what a turnaround in fortune that would have been.  Meta Knight would have given the Knights a top 6 center and someone who would develop into a top line center.  Making a jump from 0 – 1176 TPE would have been an enormous swing in talent for their rebuild.

14.) Wolfpack New England Wolfpack - Jacques Hammer – 1181 TPE – Left Wing

The Wolfpack took a big risk here grabbing a relative unknown in Jacques…ok I am kidding.  Jacques worked damn hard to earn his spot here and has continued to work hard to be considered one of the elite earners in this class just falling behind the 1200 TPE club.

REDRAFT: Jacques Hammer – 1181 TPE – NO MOVEMENT

Jacques is the 2nd best left wing in this draft class and the 3rd best winger period.  There could be an argument based on limited active wingers he could deserve to be a higher pick, but with our requirements he is the perfect pick where he is at.  Jacques is talented, arguably he is going to be a franchise piece for the New England Wolfpack.

15.) Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda (via NOLA) - Bruno Tooyo – 1160 TPE – Left Wing

Another fantastic left winger, Tampa made a great selection in picking up Bruno, he falls in that group that is just below the elite earners, so to pick up someone with that kind of talent this late in the first round shows the scouting department did a good job.

REDRAFT: Dusty Rhodes - 1165 TPE – UP 6 SPOTS

Talk about edging out someone in TPE.  In our redraft Dusty just barely edges out Bruno to nab his draft position.  I am sure Tampa is not complaining about drafting Bruno, but they do get an ever so slight bump in an earner.  Both are destined to become a top line winger if they can keep pace.

16.) Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Connor McKeilHor – Inactive – Center

I can’t help but start to feel a little for Tampa at this point.  Another first round pick and another Center and he is inactive.  Unfortunately for Tampa even with a redraft the news does not get any better for them as this spot with this position was set to fail.

REDRAFT: Toxic Neutrality - 447 TPE – UP 24 SPOTS

Toxic becomes the beneficiary of just being on a roster.  As he shoots up a ton of roster spots and claims a role on the Tampa Bay Barracuda’s he is an improvement as McKeil is up 300 TPE inactive, so Toxic could potentially claim a 4th line role on the Barracuda.  All in all, this has to be a minimal gain and a travesty of a first round position.

17.) Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs (via BUF) - Brennan Kennedy III – 421 TPE – Left Wing

Who am I to judge Minnesota for picking a 400+ TPE player in the first round, I just did that with the knowledge of how this will all turn out.  Still, I had to follow my rules setting me up for failure.  Minnesota had a few other options on the table they could have selected.

REDRAFT: Bruno Tooyo - 1060 TPE – DOWN 2 SPOTS

This would have been an amazing upgrade for the Monarchs going from a 4th line inactive to someone who is pushing for top minutes.  Bruno holds onto his first round selection and the Monarchs become that much tougher of a team to play against in the SHL.

18.) Renegades Texas Renegades (via CHI) - Pawter Meowski – 1028 TPE – Left Wing

Texas made a fantastic pick here.  They picked up a player with the 17th most TPE in the 18th overall spot.  Talk about value picking.  Meowski is the 5th best left winger in this draft and has done very well to keep pace with the top earners.

REDRAFT: Pawter Meowski – 1028 TPE – NO MOVEMENT

There is no mistake, Meowski was the perfect pick here as the Renegades got true value with this pick.  He has the makings of a potential first liner as he develops and could be a real star of the future as he hits his prime.

19.) Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs (via SEA) - Alexi Piastri – 1124 TPE – Right Wing

If Meowski is valued, Minnesota found a phenomenal value for talent here, not only in the minimal active right wing position but a player who is just below the elite earners.  Unfortunately, that same value is not here for the ReDraft.

REDRAFT: Raiya Rabinov – 913 TPE – UP 30 SPOTS

Raiya is probably the true steal of the draft, and with current TPE players left she has the second highest TPE total (Only goalie August Von Hecht is higher right now in the ReDraft).  Losing Alexi is a blow, but Raiya is a fantastic secondary option even at this position in the draft.  Props to Baltimore for finding this mid third round gem when other teams were passing or selecting inactive players.

20.) Inferno Atlanta Inferno - Potential Spam – 714 TPE - Defense

There is nothing wrong with this selection here.  Spam is still active and improving.  Which is something every GM wants and values.  The Inferno can feel good with their selection here because is one of the better active players left on the board.

REDRAFT: Brendan Laroux - 877 TPE - DOWN 9 SPOTS

In the ReDraft Atlanta would get Brendan who is a fairly significant boost in TPE over Spam, giving the Inferno a little stronger back end.  Laroux finishes the first round but retains his first round value as one as the best active defenders still available.

Round 2

21.) Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard - Dusty Rhodes – 1165 TPE – Left Wing
22.) Stampede Buffalo Stampede (via MIN) - Bojack Calhoun – Inactive - Defense
23.) Forge Philadelphia Forge (via NEW) - Sven Panda – 931 TPE – Defense
24.) Platoon Baltimore Platoon - Rod Cocker – 425 TPE - Defense
25.) Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - D Jobin – 559 TPE - Defense
26.) Patriotes Montreal Patriotes (via TEX) - Grayson Yates – 423 TPE - Defense
27.) Dragons Calgary Dragons - Shea O'Connall – 563 TPE - Defense
28.) Renegades Texas Renegades (via PHI) - Finn Brandt – 628 TPE - Defense
29.) Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda (via WPG) -  August von Hecht – 1060 TPE - Goalie
30.) pride San Francisco Pride (via MAN) - Kyle Murray – 898 TPE – Left Wing
31.) Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via MTL) - The Terrence – Inactive – Right Wing
32.) Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via SFP) - Nino Di Giuseppe – 412 TPE - Defense
33.) Patriotes Montreal Patriotes: (via TBB) - Otto Steinberger – Retired - Defense
34.) Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda (via TOR) - Cob Corning – Inactive - Defense
35.) Rage Manhattan Rage (via NOLA) - Mito Chondria – Retired – Left Wing
36.) Dragons Calgary Dragons (via LAP) - Chuchichäschtli Zopf – 1052 TPE - Defense
37.) Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs (via BUF) - Meta Knight – 1176 TPE - Center
38.) syndicate Chicago Syndicate - Rasmus Bergling – 1103 TPE - Defense
39.) Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs (via SEA) - Carl Rae Jetson – Inactive - Left Wing
40.) Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via ATL) - Toxic Neutrality – 447 TPE - Center

Round 3

41.) Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard - Rush Justice – Inactive – Right Wing
42.) Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs - Diablo Rose – Inactive – Left Wing
43.) Wolfpack New England Wolfpack  -  Otter von Bismarck – 274 TPE - Goalie
44.) Platoon Baltimore Platoon - Louis Perreault – 402 TPE - Defense
45.) Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Terry Leviathan – Retired - Center
46.) Renegades Texas Renegades - Trap Zelenock – Inactive – Left Wing
47.) Dragons Calgary Dragons - PASS
48.) Forge Philadelphia Forge - Erick Vasiljevs – Inactive – Left Wing
49.) Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via WPG) - Raiya Rabinov – 913 TPE – Right Wing
50.) Rage Manhattan Rage – PASS
51.) Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda (via MTL) - Jon Bell – Inactive - Defense
52.) pride San Francisco Pride - Theodor Larsson – Retired - Center
53.) Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs (via TBB) - Neal Newland – Inactive - Defense
54.) Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda (via TOR) – Foxy – Retired – Left Wing
55.) Specters New Orleans Specters - PASS
56.) Platoon Baltimore Platoon (via LAP) - Lachlan Moon – 242 TPE - Goalie
57.) Stampede Buffalo Stampede - KC Brady – Inactive - Center
58.) Dragons Calgary Dragons (via CHI) - PASS
59.) Renegades Texas Renegades (via SEA) - Alex Phaneuf  - Inactive – Right Wing
60.) Inferno Atlanta Inferno - PASS

OVERALL:
Give credit where credit is due.  The scouts for the most part were pretty bang on in their top 10 picks.  8 out of 10 are over 1200+ TPE.  In addition, 3 times we saw players swap draft standings within two picks of one another.  5 picks would not have changed based on positional value.

I feel a bit for Tampa, this was a rough one. Three first round picks and two went inactive.

I think I did that one in SMJHL.

Next up is grading out the SMJHL rookies/mock draft.

Then I will attempt season 62's...may God have mercy on my soul.

You only did 68, 70 + 71, but not the 69 J draft, but if that's not on your list it's okay.
