In recent memory, the Yukon Malamutes have been finding themselves towards the upper half of the SMJHL standings and this can be attributed in part to the strong drafts they have been having recently, aside from the S71 draft where they did not have any draft picks outside the 4th round.

When we take a look at the Malamutes roster, there quite a few notable names from the S69 Draft that have made an impact on the league as a whole both on and off the ice.

Yukon selected Sydney Shaw 1 overall who since being selected has been a staple on the back end, fitting into her shutdown defenseman role comfortable. Sydney also served as the Yukon team captain for two seasons from S69 to S70 before stepping down and allowing another player on the team to carry the title.

Yukon’s second selection in the S69 SMJHL entry draft was Alvin Wong at 7 overall, who is the current captain since being awarded the title in S71, and is an integral part of the 1st line dynamic first with Ray and Svatos, and now with Motyla and Svatos. Wong’s stellar two way play and read of the ice has him relied upon to be the anchor on that line, in both ends.

The next selection at 15 overall was a fantastic pick at the time it was made, Don Aven was looking to be  a promising player however other obligations had this player slip in development and they never did manage to reach their potential. Due to the skills they have, Don is currently playing defense in their final season.

During this draft, Yukon had the best 3rd round selection in the history of the franchise. There isn’t even an argument to be had about other drafts.

At 29th overall, Josh Latreille was selected who was touted to be a face puncher and a tough player to play against. Josh has certainly fit the mold however more on the wing than the centre position he was used to playing at. Josh is the go to guy when it comes to defending his teammates, and the first and last one out of a scrum.

At 40th Overall, Sven Petterson was selected and immediately slotted into Sydney Shaw’s right side on the same defensive pairing. You would think it would be difficult for a player drafted in the 3rd round to keep pace with a 1st overall selection however Sven has been able to hold his own since day one and has been relied upon as a fantastic puck mover with great vision complimenting Shaw’s steller defensive skills.

Finally at 42  overall, the Malamutes selected Austin Doumakis. Austin initially showed a lot of promise keeping up with the best of them, however began to slow down once he reached his second season in the league. Doumakis’ ceiling was that of a 1st line Centre with 425 tpe, he has capped out at a 2nd line centre/winger with 350 tpe which is still a very solid amount and has been an important part of the Malamutes offense.

Overall, this is the best draft in Malamutes history to date, with some recent draft coming to compete with that title.
