Sergei Karpotsov
@BasedMinkus Appearing in only 4 seasons, Sergei Karpotsov made his impact in the SHL known. Like you’ve seen in the past couple days, Karpotsov is another S1 player in the league. Drafted 12thOA to the Winnipeg Jets, Karpotsov was a star immediately. S1 started off hot for Sergei. In 40 games played, Sergei scored 17 goals. 20 assists for 37 points. Good for 3rd in the league, Karpotsov would be one of the first nominations for the Ron Mexico award. For league MVP. Sergei was also a part of the first ever cup winners. Winning the first Challenge Cup in S1 with the Winnipeg Jets. That playoffs as well, Karpotsov was a valuable piece of winning it. In 10 games played he scored 6 goals and 10 assists for 16 points during that run. S2 would be another all star season for Karpotsov. In 39 Games played,Karpotsov scored 9 goals, 22 assists for 31 points. That was good for 8th in the league in points. In the playoffs, not advancing to the finals, Karpotsov played 7 playoff games with 2 goals and 4 assists. S3 is when things changed to Sergei. With the Edmonton Comets coming into existence into S2 and losing to them in the conference finals,, Sergei signed with them in free agency that season for a 3 season 15 million dollar deal. In the signing the GM mcDonald has said “The Recent Free Agent Frenzy has come to a close for one man, Sergei Karpotsov has found a home not far from his previous, Karpotsov has reunited himself with fellow champions from the Winnipeg Jets and current Maurice Trophy Winners Castiel Lee and Jay McDonald. The Comets have wasted no time bolstering there lineup and with Karpotsov they are looking for a better fate come Season 3. Karpotsov has been signed for 3 years at 15 million (5 Per Year) with a player option in his last year” S3 had large results for Karpotsov. Both in the regular season and in the playoffs. S3 saw him get his 3rd Ron Mexico nomination. Scoring 8 goals, 30 assists for 38 points. He was once again 3rd in scoring. Only behind Ron Mexico and Jay McDonald in the scoring race. In the playoffs as well, Karpotsov was invaluable to the team. Scoring 5 goals and 2 assists on his way to his 2nd Challenge Cup. S4 would be his last season of his short career. He ended it with a bang. With 22 goals, 26 assists for 48 points he finally won a Ron Mexico award. He also led the league in scoring for the first time of his career, winning the Jay McDonald award for that. Only 1 point behind fellow teammate Jay McDonald, Karpotsov won the Ron Mexico for league MVP. In the playoffs, Karpotsov also felt his presence known, scoring 3 goals, 6 assists for 9 points in 10 games played. Winning his 3rd Challenge Cup in his very short career. With that, Sergei would go on and retire. In his Semi Retirement presser in June 20th 2011, Karpotsov would go on and say “Honestly and I am not trying to sound cocky here, but I feel that my name will go into the record books as one of if not the greatest player here, I mean I am 3 for 3 in championships, I have a Rocket Richard(Jay McDonald) trophy and who knows what will happen at this year awards show. But it is definitely a good feeling to know I was able to achieve something here.” In his actual retirement announcement, he would say “Uhh I would like to thank everyone for taking time out of there schedules to join me here today. I have played four great seasons in this great league. It has been extremely fun and winning certainly didn’t stop that. Winning that third title last night put me over the top and in my opinion cemented me with the greats of this league like Fernando Garcia, Damien Littleton and Jay Mcdonald. I feel as though there is nothing really left for me to accomplish in this league and as such, I Sergei Karpotsov will be retiring following the IIHF tournament. I chose to retire following that because I mad a commitment to my boy Sarm Khan and I plan on bringing the gold to Russia. Uhh before anyone has any questions I would like to thank a number of people who have been involved in my process.” And then his actual user said “I am just bored with my player, I did enough with him and it was honestly no longer fun just sitting there and watching my dude do shit. So I want a fresh start and actually have to do pt's and shit like that lol.” So what is his legacy? Well the obvious one is the award named after him. For the league leader in points for the regular season. Everyone in the SHL knows his name. In Such a short career, in a complete time in the SHL. He was one of the best players for his short time playing. In 4 seasons, Karpotsov played 159 games, 56 goals, 98 assists for 154 points. At the end of S4 he led the league in total points(154). He almost went a point per game during the era where people did not score a lot at all. Winning 3 cups, never losing a finals. Every single season he played he was nominated for the Ron Mexico could not be really achieved again. Winning the Ron Mexico in S4 and winning the Jay McDonald Award that season cemented it as well. One of the best to ever do it in the short amount of time, Karpotsov deserves to be on this list. As one of the all time greats. ![]() ![]() Registered S8, S9 Challenge Cup Champion
What a choice, and hell of an impact for such a short career.
