Martijn Westbroek
@JNH

Another Syndicate player, another one of their franchise layers. Westbroek was another cornerstone player at this time. When Chicago rose to dominance in the FHM era, Westbroek capitalized on it, earning him cups and praises. First drafted in S47,  Westbroek went to Chicago in the 2nd Round, 19th OA. Westbroek was a quick call up to the SHL, first getting playing time in S48.

S48 was the first taste of SHL action. Only scoring 6 goals, 10 assists for 16 points. Then the next season going 12 goals, 19 assists for 31 points. Westbroek was taking the route of an early SHL player. Playing on a rebuilding team like Chicago. S50 was no different, going 12 goals, 20 assists for 32 points. In S51 he even regressed, going 8 goals, 18 assists for 26 points. His career was nothing to note, especially in STHS as he was still earning TPE and not playing a ton of minutes. The last season of STHS, S52, finally had Westbroek breakout. Scoring a career high 18 goals, 24 assists for 42 points. Westbroek finally had a good to great season after 5 seasons in the SHL.

S53 was the start of FHM, scoring 16 goals, 19 assists for 35 points. Chicago was fighting for playoffs with the likes of Hamilton, Manhattan, and New England. Finishing 10th place that season in points. S54 finally saw Chicago break out as a team, and with that Westbroek took full advantage of the situation.

S54 saw Westbroeks first major season of his career. Scoring a career high 23 goals, 54 assists for 77 points. 2nd in the league in points, Westbroek was a major reason why Chicago had such a huge jump from 10th place in the league to 3rd that season. To reward him, Westbroek received 1st All Star Team, as well as getting Nominated for his first Ron Mexico Award. He also won the Aidan Richan Award for most improved player. The first key season of his career.

Like many people on this list, the season after their first amazing season, comes with a lower low. And Westbroek it was no different. S55 saw him go from 77 points down to 47 points. Only scoring 4 goals, 33 assists for 47 points. It did not take long for Westbroek to stay down though.
S56 saw Westbroek get back to 70 points for the final 50 game season. Scoring a career high 40 goals, 30 assists for 70 points. Again, Westbroek was the bridesmaid not the bride. 2nd in points behind Theo Morgan, Westbroek received his 2nd Ron Mexico Nomination. He also got 1st All Star Team too. Another MVP level season from Westbroek.

S57 is when the SHL changed to 66 games played. With that score went up as they played more games. In 66 GP, he scored 39 goals, 48 assists for 87 points. Good for 2nd in the league again! Or Tied for 2nd with Jimmy Slothface. However, no Mexico nomination for him this time. Only a 2nd All Star Team.

S58 showed another strong outing from Westbroek . Scoring 41 goals, 36 assists for 77 points. Good for 9th in the league for scoring. Also good for his first 3rd All Star Team. S59 was slightly better, scoring 43 goals, 35 assists for 78 points. Good for 7th in the league in scoring. Another top 10 appearance by Westbroek.

S60 would be the last dominant season by him. Scoring 38 goals, 51 assists for 89 points. This would be the highest point total Westbroek will get in his career. Westbroek finished 4th in points in the league, and secured his 3rd Ron Mexico Nomination in his career. He would also got a Anton Razov Nomination for taking Chicago to the finals.

S61 would be a dropdown in points. Yet with it being his 14th season in the league, and regression taking a toll. He managed to score 27 goals, 41 assists for 68 points that season. 23rd in points for the season. S62 would be slightly better, 26 goals, 47 assists for 73 points. 19th in the league in scoring.

S63 would see Westbroek go under a PPG for the first time in 7 seasons. Scoring 24 goals, 35 assists for 59 points. S64 saw Westbroek only score 40 points. However in the playoffs, Westbroek had a resurgence, turning back the clock. Scoring 29 points in 23 games, and winning his first and only Challenge Cup, Westbroek won the Anton Razov Award for playoff MVP. S65 would be the final season of his career, scoring 27 goals, 31 assists for 58 points.

With his final season in the league, Westbroek retired. In 18 seasons in the SHL, Westbroek played in 1044 GP, 433 goals and 572 assistss. Being one of the rare people to crack 1000+ points, with 1005 points. Finishing his career with 7th in total points. With 3 Ron Mexico Nominations, he was one of the best player in the early seasons of FHM. A top 10 players for most of the S50’s.
