(GRADED)Deep Dive #2 - Understanding the Rule Book

I want to start by confessing something about this deep dive: it was challenging to decide what to write about. I spent a good portion of my time on the SHL analytics site, which is awesome. But I couldn't find what I was looking for: a breakdown of the SHL 49 entry draft (which includes yours truly). I wanted to see how the top of the class had fared in their careers, but alas, the 49 draft is either missing or elusive to me.

Hence, I've pivoted and chosen to focus on a topic dear to my heart: expansion. Now, before you holler at me about my first deep dive being about expansion teams, let me clarify - this one goes in a different direction. This dive is about the rules involved with the SMJ and how they can impact your decision to apply for the new expansion GM role.

The reason I found this information significant is because, like many, I'm intrigued by the idea of not only being an SMJ GM but also creating a new brand and team for the site. However, this decision comes at a cost. If I were to apply for the role, it would affect my ability to play for my current team, the Kelowna Knights.

In the SMJHL Rulebook, Rule #1 deals with Conflicts of Interest. It outlines that if a user holds a team manager position while also having an active player in the SMJ, that player must play for the team that the user manages. Meaning, if I were to become the GM of a new expansion team, I could no longer play for Kelowna. Cue the sad music. But why is this important to uphold? Am I not trustworthy?

The truth is that avoiding conflicts of interest in positions of authority is vital. It helps maintain fairness and trust, which can be gained in drops and lost in buckets, hence its crucial role in a community setting.

What's critical to understand about this rule is that since I was not drafted by an expansion team (as they don't exist yet), I would have to resign immediately from Kelowna if I were accepted as a new expansion GM. Resigning would be a tough pill to swallow for my team, and for that reason alone, I won't be applying for expansion. The thought of being an expansion team GM and ushering in a new era to the SMJ is tantalizing. I'm excited to see what comes of it and will be thrilled when us Knights get our first win against the incoming teams. So, I will say it now - prepare for the fight of your lives, incoming teams!

The essence of this deep dive is to emphasize the importance of comprehending the rules of a job posting before proceeding with an application. It serves as a valuable reminder that even if we perceive a rule in a job posting as unfair, we must pause and recognize its purpose. Such rules exist to uphold fairness and transparency within the league, essential elements for maintaining the excitement and novelty of the game we all love.
