A Letter to Sophie Bordeleau
#1

Hearing the news of Sophie Bordeleau retiring was like a gut punch to Sonja. She was only like one or two seasons away from not just meeting but also finally playing alongside the woman she was looking up to from her early teens. Sophie was one of the reasons why Sonja was so excited about being drafted by the Dragons. After all Sonja was still pretty much a teen when she first saw Sophie play. And she instantly fell in love with her style of play. Heck the next time she stepped onto the ice she tried to mimick Sophie’s movements from that first game she saw. She still vividly remembers the worried expressions her sister Frøya made whenever she would fall on the ice as she was trying to pull of plays that she clearly did not have the balance for yet. That however was also the moment she truly went into overdrive when it comes to training hockey. And she never stopped from that. So in a way Sophie is also responsible for Sonja’s work ethic. So Sonja being the first to hit and last to leave the ice is in fact thanks to Sophie as well. Well that and many other things. Sure thing, Sonja’s main idol is and was always Cristiano Ronaldo. But when it came to hockey, there was no other she looked up to more than Sophie Bordeleau. As such the first thing she did upon hearing the news was sit down to her desk, take a paper and a pen out -yes, she was an oldschool woman- and start writing a letter to Sophie.

I still vividly remember the very first game where i saw you play. You were not just great but straight up outstanding. It’s safe to say that I was not just amazed from the very start but I have also fallen in love with your style of play. From that moment onwards i followed every single game of yours and i was trying to improve myself as much as i can so one day i can reach your level. You were a very big inspiration to me and my dream was to be able to play with you one day. After all there was not that many years between us. Of course i understand your reason to retire and i can only wish you and your family the very best. Hopefully one day i’ll grow to be a player you can be proud of. I just want you to know that you’re one of the main reasons that I am where I am in my career. You were like an idol for me growing up. Thank you for everything Sophie.

- Sonja Solberg

With the letter written, Sonja stood up from her chair and placed it in an envelope. She was gonna hand it over to Sophie one way or another. She did not yet figured out how she will do it but she will cross that bridge once the time comes. For now, she went on to do her usual night time routine before she could finally go to bed. She would of course loved to attend Sophie’s very last home game however with her own season conflicting with Sopehie’s one there was no chance for her to do so. However she would still give the letter to Sophie, she would just have to ask one of the staff members to place her letter in Sophie’s locker. While it might have been better to give this letter to her personally, she could not. Though perhaps it was the best. As she did not find the courage in herself to do so. The usually overconfident Sonja felt like a damn fangirl in this moment. As such she felt it was probably for the best that she was not able to attend that game and instead have to give the letter to her indirectly. In hindsight that turned out to be the best course of action as she did watched the game on a replay and it’s safe to say Sophie’s final game has been a very emotional watch for Sonja. However, if anything this whole chain of events would only go on to motivate Sonja even more. She wanted to see this rebuild through with Calgary and bring them to the very top. For both herself and for Sophie.

oh my gosh

This is so kind! I'm glad my player was an influence for you, and I'm looking forward to the connections with Sophie moving into coaching.

Respect to a legend from a future legend

“The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again. ... There are neither beginnings nor endings to the Wheel of Time. But it was a beginning.”

I'm very happy to hear you enjoyed this little media piece i wrote. It's safe to say that Sophie was indeed a huge influence on Sonja. As such i'm looking forward to see her moving into coaching. And who knows, maybe more media piece between the two can be born. Only time will tell ^^
