[VSN] Origins & Tall Tales
#1

This takes place many years before the previous installment of the Mumei saga.

It was a cold winter’s night, seventeen years ago, in a small village many miles north of Ottawa, a young mother gave birth to an unusual child. Complete with owl feathers on her head. The Inuit knew it was the Warrior Owl that was prophesied for many generations, a savior to them. But, almost immediately the baby went through some problems, as a bear tried to eat the young Mumei, but a strange look in the eyes of Mumei made the bear tremble in fear, and ran away.

This strange ability caused some concern within the tribespeople, so they agreed to send the then six-year old Mumei away to Japan, where she can be closely monitored about her strange abilities that would send fear among anyone who tried to harm her.

While she was in Japan, she seemed to find an identity for herself, as she started to thrive in sports, with hockey in particular becoming a personal favorite of hers. She also became an Idol from the age of 10, and often used her split personality to help control her vocal ranges, and her dancing.

Mumei started training with Videl Valor, who had recently scored 59 goals in her most recent season, and seemingly created an unbreakable bond that couldn’t be severed.

However, Videl noticed the Inuit accent in Mumei’s voice and wanted to discuss her heritage.

Videl: So you’re not originally from these parts, eh? Your name does sound Japanese though.

Mumei: My tribe is a mixture of Japanese and Inuit people. Legend has it that they were welcomed into the tribe when their colony failed due to a drought. We just simply integrated our cultures together and lived in peace for many generations. That was until the British came in, and rag-dolled us. But that wasn’t the worse thing they have done. It was the residential schools they forced to attend, the kids there were beheaded of their culture and tortured if they refused to comply. Luckily I didn’t have to go through those, but my parents had to, I’m glad that they’re still around, we need to learn from the past to not make the same mistakes.

Videl: Oh my god. I would love to see your people one day, and I would love to learn their traditions. Could you teach me some so that I can be accepted by them?

Mumei: Of course, but in exchange, you will help me get into the Canadian juniors system, since I heard that they were some of the best in the world in developing players.

The two would agree to move back to Canada after spending 6 years together, and the now 16 year old Mumei was playing in Ottawa with the 67’s, largely due to her Inuit roots, and a referral from Videl Valor.

After a brief stint playing in both Japanese and Canadian clubs, as well as preforming as her Idol character, Mumei got the best news of her life. Her people were now protected and recognized as a sovereign state, after generations of psychological warfare.

But that wasn’t the only good news she got on that day. As the Ottawa 67’s selected her in the OHL draft a couple of hours later. Proving that her grind did indeed have some upside. There was also an issue though, she often injured players due to her twisted side coming out while playing, sending players into the boards screaming in fear.

But after some interventions by the team’s coaches and Videl, Mumei cleaned up her act and continued to help Ottawa reach, and win the Memorial cup. Mumei then declared for the SMJHL draft during her seventeenth birthday.

One of the gifts she received was a hockey stick made out of indigenous materials and had a special mark in Japanese, which translated to say "Be proud of who you are".

A lesson that Mumei takes to heart to this very day.

She now hopes that a J team gives her a chance to show off what she is made of.
