For this first deep dive, I wanted to take a look at an era of Seattle Argonauts hockey that was such a huge part of my SHL lived experience. That is, the stretch from Season 66-70 where the Argos made five (5) consecutive Western conference finals appearances, as well as three (3) consecutive Challenge Cup appearances, winning the cup twice.
Season 66: Challenge Cup Finals appearance, lose to ATL in 6 The Argonauts finished seventh (7th) in the league this season. They took down the San Francisco Pride in 6 games before facing the divisional rivals and higher seed LA Panthers. Here, the Argos pulled off an upset, sweeping the Cats and taking on the league's 2nd place team the Chicago Syndicates. This was a very stacked and talented Syndicate roster, but the Argos handled Chicago steadily as well, defeating them in six games to make their first ever Challenge Cup appearance. Here, they faced Atlanta, who had a straightforward road to the finals, sweeping Hamilton, taking down Tampa Bay in 6, and then taking down the Stampede in 5. As it says on the tin, the Argonauts would fall short to their expansion cousins, as Atlanta would win the cup (as would micool too, as he did and is gonna win the cup) Season 67: Challenge Cup Champions, Defeats MAN in 7 The Argos finished fifth (5th) in the league this season. Luukas Lilja recorded over 100 points in the regular season. The Argonauts swept San Francisco, defeated Calgary in 6, and then took down Winnipeg in 6 to face the Manhattan Rage. The Rage took a 3-2 series lead, but the Argonauts defied the odds by winning games 6 and 7, with the decisive seventh game holding a score of 9-1 in a massive rout. The Argonauts, for the first time in franchise history, were Challenge Cup champions. As a shameless self plug, my own player recorded 28 points in 23 games during that post season run. Season 68: Challenge Cup Champions, Defeats MAN in 7 History might not repeat itself, but it rhymes sometimes. The Argos, coming off a legendary 54 win regular season campaign, sweep LAP, take down Calgary in 5, and Chicago in 5, to face the Manhattan Rage in a rematch. Once again, the series went to a decisive seventh game, and the Argos would reign triumphant, winning back to back Challenge Cups. Season 69: Western Conference Finals appearance, lose to WPG in 7 Making a fourth appearance in the conference finals, the Argos run would ultimately fall short to a powerhouse Winnipeg team. Prior to this, the Argos handled Texas and Edmonton with ease. Season 70: Western Conference Finals appearance, lose to WPG in 5 Once again, the Argonauts find themselves facing Winnipeg, and once again they will be defeated by the Aurora, this time around in five games. Later seasons: The Argonauts would be eliminated in the first round of the following post-season by the LA Panthers, and would see another first round exit in Season 72 to the Blizzard. The team would then undergo a rebuild, before officially clinching a playoff spot for the upcoming S78 playoffs.
