From season 70 to season 75 the Edmonton Blizzard were one of, if not the best, teams in the SHL. Their top six players consisting of Evan Winter, Jack St. Clair, Benjamin Surkhi-Ze’ev, Louise St. Martin, and Luke Laraque were an absolute power house in the league. You cannot leave out Justin Time either, backstopping the Blizzard over these dominant years.
The Blizzard won one championship during this time between S70 and S75. It is a travesty that they didn’t capitalize more in this time, and these players deserved more accolades than they received. Evan Winter Evan Winter joined the Blizzard via trade in S71 when the team really kicked off its best years. In 330 games player for the Blizzard (through S75) he amassed 258 goals (WOW), 303 assists, was a plus 260, and won 56.14% of faceoffs taken. He truly was the leader of the team on the ice and the MVP year in and year out. Mr. Blizzard you could call him. Jack St. Clair Jack St. Clair was drafted 2nd overall by the Blizzard in S67. He joined the big club in S70 when the team started their rise to the top. In the 396 games played Jack racked up 216 goals, 281 assists, was a plus 218, and won 56.13% of faceoffs taken. Jack played the first few years as second fiddle to Evan and his production early in his career took a small hit due to that. He was an incredibly important part of the team though. Benjamin Surkhi-Ze’ev Benjamin Surkhi-Ze’ev was drafted 12th overall by the Blizzard in S65. Ben joined the Blizzard in S68, when days were still dark, but you could see the light at the end of the tunnel. In the 396 games played between S70 and S75 Ben scored 262 goals, 354 assists, and was a plus 205. Ben was the premier winger for the Blizzard throughout these years of greatness. Louise St. Martin Louise St. Marin joined the Blizzard via trade in S69. He was a huge part of the reason the Blizzard took a step forward on defense and as a whole. In 396 games played Louise counted 115 goals, 240 assists, and was a plus 209. Mr. St. Martin was a massive anchor on the backend for the Blizzard, he averaged over 22 minutes per game for 4 out of the 6 seasons between S70 and S75. Luke Laraque Luke Laraque was drafted 6th overall by the Blizzard in S65. Luke also joined the team in S68 like Ben. In the 396 games Luke played between S70 and S75 he notched 177 goals, 375 assists, and was plus 178 throughout that time. Luke was what you could call the third wheel for almost his entire time in Edmonton. He was an important part of the team, but was the 3rd best point producer on his line throughout those seasons. Justin Time Justin Time was drafted 6th overall by the Blizzard in S64. He joined the team in S67 and really didn’t have a great time until S69. Through the 6 seasons we are looking at, Justin’s record was 239-70-9. He recorded 21 shutouts throughout that time as well. Without Justin Time the Blizzard simply would not be the same team they were through this period in history. Code: 553 words |
