So, I just saw that the Prospect Showcase is coming back to the SMJHL. That is amazing news in my opinion. I remember, a long, long time ago, way back in S47, I created my first ever player in the SHL, Lyle Odelein III. Now, this wasn’t just my first SHL player, this was my first simulation player for anything. I had no friggin clue what I was getting into, I saw a post on r/habs one fine day and decided to give it a try. I created my player on April 11th, 2019 and the Prospect Showcase rosters were announced the next day, I just made it in time to get this awesome introduction into simulation hockey.
Lyle Odelein III was named to the Stingrays, one of the four teams to participate in S47 Prospect Showcase. The other teams to round out the quartet where the Blazers, the Wranglers and the Vipers. The roster for each team were as follows: NOTE: Any player with a ZZ in front of their name were not actual prospects, they were used to fill out the rosters, I have included them because I think some of them are funny! Blazers Forwards Hide Nagachika ZZ Sidney Crosby Dwayn Petatyutin Joe Kerr Calogero Crudelli Mael Cachemar Bobby Bobcalf Defenders Noah Tedla Jakko Jarvinen Mikelis Ozolins ZZ Michael Jordan ZZ Big McLargeHuge ‘Multipositinal’ (listed as all positions) ZZ Selena Gomez ZZ Brad Smith ZZ Alex Roesner ZZ Bingham ZZ Blaze It ZZ Cheech ZZ Blade Goaltenders Kasperi Braulin ZZ Queen Elizabeth Stingrays Forwards Gordon Bombay ZZ Jingle Heimer-Schmidt Conrad Farell Ryan McCormick Kaleb Jackman Nick Connolly Melty HolyBlood Defenders Piotr Horvat Kaspars Claude Lyle Odelein III ‘Multipositinal’ (listed as all positions) ZZ Amiboshi ZZ Ryder Garnsey ZZ A.J Baretto ZZ Angelica Pickles ZZ Tim Kelly ZZ Amethyst ZZ Bait ZZ Atlas ZZ Alex Woodall ZZ Timmy Monahan Goalies Michal Burzawa ZZ Ugly Goalie Vipers Forwards Mika Kandinsky Ravyn Tedisko Marc Palicka Jr Heikki Jaakola Atlas Rush Onwediwe Adebowale ZZ Jason Joseph ZZ Margaret Thatcher Defenders David Hines Simon Leblanc Victor Toeman ‘Multipositinal’ (listed as all positions) ZZ Chris Donovan ZZ Hunter Seals ZZ Drew Supinski ZZ Dan Bucaro ZZ Epidus ZZ Cade van Raaphorst ZZ Big Fish ZZ Bitsy ZZ Large McBigHuge Goaltenders Biz Nasty ZZ Algae Wranglers Forwards Kathwyrm Hepbjorn SHL UsedToBeFun Travis Bitties Tah Puhcheese Jocke Nystrom ZZ Michael Phelps ZZ Tiger Woods Defenders Olivier Cleary Satoshi Zizagooney Pardraig Sarantez Deece Graziatu ZZ Megan Foxhole ‘Multipositinal’ (listed as all positions) ZZ John Jacobs ZZ Pumba ZZ Tommy Wright ZZ Boomer ZZ Noah Lejman ZZ Joey Froccaro Goaltenders Alexander Thorstrom ZZ Bad Goalie With these rosters set, these four teams filled with promising young players ready to start their journey in the SMJHL and then hopefully into the SHL. Now before I start talking about the tournament, I just want to point out that this long ago, we were still using good old SimonT as the simulator, for those of you who don’t know what that is, feel free to ask an older SHL’er about the love but mostly hate relationship with our old friend SimonT. The four teams were set into two, two team conferences, the Determined Conference with the Wranglers and the Blazers and the Tenacious Conference with the Vipers and the Stingrays. Each team played 20 games in the ‘round robin’ portion of the Showcase, with each team playing the other team from their own conference 9 times and the other 2 teams from the other conference, 11 times. Here is the breakdown on how each team did during the round robin: The Blazers finished the round robin with a record of 8-10-2, giving them 18 points, which left them 2nd in their conference. They scored 65 goals during the round robin and had 71 goals scored on them for a differencial of -6. They were better on home ice than on the road, with a 6-4 home record versus a 2-6-2 record on the road. Calogero Crudelli and Hide Nagachika lead their team with 23 points. Crudelli lead the team with 14 goals and defender Jaako Jarvinen lead the Blazers in assists with 17. Noah Tedla and ZZ Sidney Crosby each had 10 PIMs to top the list for the Blazers and Crudelli lead his team in hits with 28. Crudelli once again was the top Blazer in shots, firing 100 at the opposing goalies. ZZ Blaze It, had the best shot percentage, with 50%, although he only had two shots in total, maybe old Blaze should have taken a few more shots! In the shots blocked stat, defensemen Mikelis Ozolins lead the team with 25. Moving on to the Stingrays in the Tenacious conference, they finished with a record of 10-7-3, with like the Blazers, found them in second place in their conference. They managed to score 56 goals overall and had 61 goals scored against them, for a differential on -5. Unlike the Blazers, the Stingrays were a better road team, with a 6-2-2 record, while their home record ended up 4-5-1. Looking at the team individual stats, Conrad Farell led the Stingrays with 23 points in the round robin, 13 goals and 10 assists. His 13 goals was the best for the team, while defensemen Lyle Odelein III and Kaspars Claude led the team in assists, with 11 each. When it came to penalties, two Stingrays spent a whole lot of time in the penalty box, Melty HolyBlood 26 PIMs while ZZ Alex Woodall had a whopping 34 minutes of penalties in the 20 games that they played. For hits, Melty HolyBlood hit 83 players through the 20 games. The leading goal scorer, Farell, also led the team in shots, with 96 pucks fired at the net. Another 1 out 2 shot player led the team in shooting percentage, ZZ Amiboshi may have had a better tournament if they just fired a few more pucks at the goalie. Defenders, Piotr Horvat and Kaspars Claude each blocked a decent amount of shots, 41 and 45 respectively. And I just wanted to note here, that prospect Lyle Odelein III, who would go on to become the all time shots blocked leader in the SHL chipped in with 27 blocks. Next, we will look at one of the conference winners, the Determined Conferences Wranglers. They finished with a record of 10-8-2, good for 22 points. They had a goal differential of +2, scoring 62 times and letting in 60 goals. They had a 5-3-2 record while on home ice and a 5-5 record while on the road. Travis Bitties led the Wranglers in goals (14) and in total points with 23 points in the 20 games. Oliver Cleary had 17 assists to top the assists category for the Wranglers. ZZ Noah Lejman had the most penalty minutes for the Wranglers with 19 PIMs. Jocke Nystrom played the body the most out of his Wranglers teammates, registering 37 hits. 101 shots was the top shot number by a Wrangler player and that was accomplished by Travis Bitties. ZZ Tommy Wright was the shooting percentage leader, although he only had 6 shots all together. Assist leader, Oliver Cleary, also had the most blocked shots, stopping 32 pucks from getting to his goalie. And last, but certainly not least, the top performing team during the 20 game round robin portion, the Vipers. The Vipers had a record of 12-7-1 for 25 points, the best of the 4 teams playing in the Prospect Showcase. They scored 74 goals (the most of all four teams) and let in 65, for a differential of +9. They had a stellar home record of 7-3 and an away record of 5-4-1. Ravyn Tedisko had the most points for the Vipers, 16 goals, which was the best on the team, and 14 assists for a total of 30 points. David Hines had 21 assists for the Vipers which was the most for the team. Forward Atlas Rush recorded 22 minutes of penalties, earning him the team lead here. He also led the Vipers in hits, with 54. Tedisko fired 113 shots towards the opposing teams net, which was the most for all Viper players. And one of my personal favourite players, ZZ Large McBigHuge, took only 2 shots on net and one of those happened to find its way to the back of the net, giving McBigHuge a 50% shooting percentage. Assist leader, David Hines, also led his team in blocked shots, with 34. Now, before we look at the playoff portion of the playoffs, let’s take a look at the round robin league leaders stats. As just mentioned above, Ravyn Tedisko scored 16 goals in the 20 game round robin, that was the most out of all the skaters. Calogero Crudelli and Travis Bitties each had 14 goals and Conrad Farell and Onwudiwe Adebowale rounded out the top five goal scores with 13 and 12 goals respectively. For assists, another Vipers player led the Showcase, tallying 21 helpers, followed by Jaako Jarvinen and Oliver Cleary with 17, 5 other players (Hide Nagachika, Noah Tedla, Simon LeBlanc, Satoshi Zizagooney) all tied with 15 assists. Total shots for the skaters was topped again by Ravyn Tedisko with 113, Travis Bitties (101) and Calogero Crudelli (100) were the only other players to break the 100 mark, Conrad Farell (96) and Ryan McCormack (94) completed the top 5 in shots. ZZ Alex Woodall led the tournament in PIMs with 34 penalty minutes, followed by Melty HolyBlood with 26 PIMs, Atlas Rush with 22 penalty minutes, ZZ Noah Lejman with 19 and the fifth highest penalty minute earning was ZZ Tommy Wright. For the hits category, Stingrays player Melty HolyBlood laid out almost 30 more players than the next closest player, with 83 recorded hits. Next was Atlas Rush with 54, then top goal scorer, Ravyn Tedisko with 46 then Jocke Nystrom with 35 and finishing out the top five, Ryan McCormack with 35 hits. In the shots blocked category, Stingray teammates, Piotr Horvat and Kaspars Claude were 1 and 2 with 45 and 41 blocks. Followed by David Hines with 34, Simon LeBlanc with 33 and Victor Toeman with 32. Michal Burzawa finished with a golas For our Prospect Showcase netminders, Michal Burzawa for the Stingrays had the best save percentage with a .900%, with Wranglers goalie, Alexander Thorstrom with a .894%, Biz Nasty for the Vipers with a .892% and rounding out the goalies for the Blazers, Kasperi Braulin had a .886%. Michal Burzawa topped the table in goals against average as well, with a 2.85 GAA, Biz Nasty was next with a 2.90, then Alexander Thorstrom with 3.04 GAA and lastly, Kasperi Braulin with a 3.28 GAA. Biz Nasty had the most wins, with 12 and Burzawa / Nasty / Thorstrom all recorded one shutout in the tournament. One last stat on the leaderboard that I wanted to mention, was a stat you don’t see much, hit taken. In this tournament, Hide Nagachika was hit the most, 53 times. Gordon Bombay was next, really close at 52 hits taken and Mika Kandinsky was hit the third most, getting bodied around 48 times. Now on to the playoffs. The Showcase was set up with a best 2 out of 3 semifinal and then another best 2 out of 3 final. The first round matchups saw each conference play each other, leaving the best team from each conference to duke it out in the finals. First up, let’s look at the match up between the Blazers and the Wranglers. Game one was a close affair, with the home team scoring first, going up 1-0 with a goal form Tah Puhcheese. The second period saw the Wranglers look to close out the opening match, scoring two more goals by Travis Bitties and Jocke Nystrom. Going into the third period with a 3-0 lead must have made the Wranglers overconfident, the Blazers came out fast and strong, scoring 2 goals in the first 2.30 minutes of the third period, by Bobby Bobcalf and Calogero Crudelli. But the comeback was halted there, the final of the first game ended at 3-2 Wranglers. The top three stars of the game were Blazers Calogero Crudelli, and Jocke Nystrom and Tah Puhcheese from the Wranglers. Game two was a nail bitter for sure. After a scoreless first period, Calogero Crudelli opened the scoring for the Blazers and the game on the power play, but was quickly (about 9 seconds later) countered by a goal by Wranglers Travis Bitties. They traded another goal each in the period and then played another scoreless period in the third, sending the game into overtime! Calogero Crudelli scored their second of the game about halfway through the overtime period, tying up the series at 1 game a piece. The third and deciding game of the series wasn’t as close as the first two games. With a 5 goal first period, the Wranglers took the lead with goals from Satoshi Zizagooney, SHLUsedToBeFun and Deece Graziatu. The two goal scorers from the Blazers were Joe Kerr and Noah Tedla. The Blazers did tie up the contest in the 2nd period, with a goal by Dwayn Petatyuin at 3-3. But the Wranglers took over in the third period, with Satoshi Zizagooney scoring their second of the game and Tah Puhcheese sealing the Blazers fate, and the Wranglers winning the game and the series, with a score of 5-3. The three stars of this game were all Wranglers, Satoshi Zizagooney, SHL UsedToBeFun and Tah Puhcheese. In the other conference final, the top team in the round robin portion of the Prospect Showcase, the Vipers took on the Stingrays. The series started with both teams scoring one goal in the first period, the Stingrays struck first with a goal form Piotr Horvat on the power play. The Vipers answered at the end of the period with a goal from Mika Kandinsky. They played a scoreless second period and went into the third period still tied 1-1. In the third period, the Vipers capitalized on a power play, taking their first lead of the game, but the Stingrays wouldn’t give up, scoring the game tying goal with just over a minute left in the game, sending this one into overtime. It wasn’t too long into the extra frame, about 5 minutes, that the Vipers Onwudiwe Adebowale scored the game winner, giving the Vipers the first win of the series. Three stars for this game were Stingray goalie Michal Burzawa and Viper players Ravyn Tedisko and David Hines. In game two, the Vipers drew first blood, Ravyn Tedisko scoring the lone goal in the first period. The Vipers added another goal early in the second period and the Stingrays got on the board as well, making the game 2-1 in favour of the Vipers going into the third period. The Stingrays tied the game up in the first minute of the third period, with a quick strike form Ryan McCormick, but the Vipers regained the lead on a power play with a goal from Atlas Rush with just over 5 minutes remaining in the game. The Vipers added an empty netter at the very end of the game, ending the Stingrays Showcase and advancing to the finals. The three stars for this game were all on the winning side, Atlas Rush, Ravyn Tedisko and Heikki Jaakola. The finals matchup saw the two conference leaders face off against other, the Vipers and the Wranglers. This first game was the most lopsided game yet in the playoffs. The Vipers torched the Wranglers 6-0 with goals from Marc Palicka Jr, Mika Kandinsky (2), Atlas Rush (2) and Heikki Jaakola. In a relatively easy win for the Vipers, the three stars went Atlas Rush, Mika Kandinsky and Biz Nasty who recorded the shutout. Game number two wasn’t nearly as easy for the Vipers as the first game was. The Wranglers scored their first goal of the series in the first period on the power play, Padraig Sarantez opened the scoring for the game and the Wranglers. Ravyn Tedisko evened the game up before the first period ended. The Wranglers scored again in the second period, with Kathwyrm Hepbjorn scoring the only goal of the frame. An eventful third period saw the Vipers Mika Kandinsky tie the game up with a short handed goal but the Wranglers took over after that, Padraing Sarantez scoring their second goal of the game and Satoshi Zazagooney added an empty netter to seal the deal and win game number two with a final score of 4-2 for the Wranglers, sending this series to a third and deciding game. The three stars for this match were all Wranglers, Pardraig Sarantez, Satoshi Zizagooney and Alexander Thorstrom. In the final game of the showcase, this winner take all contest, each team scored a first period goal. The Vipers Ravyn Tedisko scoring first and the Wranglers Deece Graziatu evening it up at 1-1. These were the only goals scored in regulation, the teams played the second and third period very tightly, and at the end of regulation, the score was still 1-1. At the 6.29 minute mark of the overtime frame, Satoshi Zizagooney won the game and the Showcase for the Wranglers, scoring the winning goal which was assisted by Kathwyrm Hepbjorn and Padraig Sarantez. The three stars for the game were, Alexander Throstrom, Satoshi Zizagooney and Padraig Sarantez. That concluded the S47 Prospect Showcase, with the Wranglers coming out on top over the Vipers. Well, that’s how the Prospect Showcase went many, many seasons ago. Some of you may recognize some of the names that were mentioned throughout the article and some you probably never heard of before. For me, I recognized a lot of these players, since my player was drafted along side them. The results of these games and showcases shouldn’t be held too tight, since many things will change for each player from now until the end of their careers. I know a lot of the players that played during this showcase didn’t crack a SHL roster and some of the top players in my draft class joined the league too late and weren’t part of the Showcase. So please, take this S78 Prospect Showcase for what it is, a fun way to get introduced into the world of the SHL. If your player doesn’t have a great tournament, don’t sweat it. My player didn’t really stand out in anyway during the 22 games he took part in, but he went on to be the TPE leader of this draft class, a SHL fantasy player darling and as previously mentioned, the SHL all time leader in blocked shots as well as the most blocks recorded in a single season and he won a cup with the great New Orleans Specters! Thanks for joining me on this trip down memory lane, for those of you who may have taken part in this Showcase with me, I hoped I brought up some fond memories of the old days! Good luck to all the new players coming in to the league, you are in a great place and I hope that this S78 Prospect Showcase will be the first great experiences of many in your career, just like it was mine!!
