What? Who? What year is it?!?! Wake up babe, the new Blizzstars FINALLY dropped!
Welcome back from the looooong hiatus from the weekly Edmonton Blizzstars! You can thank Edmonton having a graveyard roster and also me being lazy for that. Additionally, google drive is blocked on my work network so now everything is 10x harder, THANKS government. I believe the last iteration was in S73, so I just wanted to thank all the active and/or old Blizzbians who were on the roster propping up this franchise. Maybe the real Blizzstars were the friends we made along the way, you are the real MVPs <3 So let's get on with it! In stark contrast to the S73 Blizzstars, we are not the steamrollers but the steamrollees(sp?). As it stands a little more than halfway through S79, the Blizzard sit 20th in the league....with a 10-30-3 record through 43 games. It's not too late to pack this thing back up and wait until next season....but I digress. EVERYTHING IS GOING ACCORDING TO PLAN. With almost half the roster being rookies, the team is doing surprisingly well and showing the Blizzard can hold their own even against top teams in the league. With a couple more seasons under their belt, the team will a be force to reckon with (HO pls raise the salary cap). Cuz life got busy and I'm mostly lazy, here are your S79 Week 1 and then Week 2 Blizzstars of the week! Week 1
⭐
First Blizzstar
Alexa Johansen
#16 - RW - San Diego, USA
17GP - 13G, 11A, 24P, +1
You'll be seeing a lot of Alexa Johansen on the weekly Blizzstars, she has put the league on notice as her rookie campaign is off to a blazing start. Stepping into the top line role as a rookie and not missing a beat, Johansen was leading or was tied for the lead in goals throughout week 1. After the first week of the season, Alexa leads the team in Goals (13), +/- (+1), Shots on Goal (84), and Game Rating (74). This pace is a shoo-in for Rookie of the Year among other accolades, unless her linemates have anything to say about it.
⭐⭐
Second Blizzstar
Ólafur Atlason
@HabsFanFromOntario
'#20 - LW - Reykjavik, Iceland 17GP - 12G, 14A, 26P, +0 The highly touted prospect hailing from Iceland has made his debut in the SHL and is immediately turning heads. Some say he looks like Juraj Slafkovsky's younger, more handsome, slightly balder brother. Atlason may look similar to Slafkovsky, but his talent and skill are far above that of Slafkovsky. The other 1/3 of the Blizzard rookie top line, Atlason has shown he his ready for and has earned the early call up to the SHL. Excelling in all facets of the game, a well rounded forward that can hurt you on the scoresheet and keep you off of it. Another contender for RoTY, the awards team has their work cut out for them this season. Atlason leads the team in Points (26), and Hits (23) in Week 1.
⭐⭐⭐
Third Blizzstar
Dash Jackson
@Dash
#6 - LD - London, Canada
17GP - 5G, 7A, 12P, -17
Another rookie for the Blizzard! Dash Jackson is learning the art of being a D in the SHL, cutting his teeth on the intricacies of the position. Taking the brunt of the defensive responsibilities for the team as his linemate is a complete liability, Jackson has been played in all scenarios and is relied upon to be the teams anchor on the backend. The +/- (-17) is not so much a indictment on Jackson, but more so an indication of a struggling team learning the system (and also his bum D partner). Dash has been stellar on the back end with 21 takeaways (2nd on team), 14 hits, and 51 blocked shots (2nd on team). Dash is already putting up numbers like a seasoned D-man in the SHL, the Blizzard D-corps is in good hands.
17GP - 4G, 17A, 21P, -5
The final third of the rookie top line, and a worthy Blizzstar in her own right. Gwendolyn is our honourable mention for week 1 but made a strong case for any of the Blizzstar spots. Leading the team and top 10 in the league in Assists with 17, and 20 Penalty Minutes, she will give out apples and fists. Her 2-way game is what allows her linemates to put up their points, she is the backbone of the unit at Center and will definitely make a push to weekly Blizzstar appearances.
Week 2
⭐
First Blizzstar
Alexa Johansen
#16 - RW - San Diego, USA
16GP - 11G, 7A, 18P, -12
Some way this is where the training wheels kind of fell off and subsequently all the other wheels as well for the Edmonton Blizzard (1-14-1 in week 2). But tis but a scratch for Alexa Johansen, she just keeps trucking along and putting up points. Despite the teams spiral into the abyss, Johansen keeps her above a point-per-game pace in week 2 with 18 Points in 16 Games Played (42P in 33GP). Top 10 in the league in Shots on Goal (57), and leading the team in Hits (21), and Game Rating (72) in Week 2.
⭐⭐
Second Blizzstar
Julian Eaglesong
#91 - C - Cologne, Germany
16GP - 6G, 8A, 14P, -16
Our resident old man, the only constant throughout the entire journey to the cup and rebuild. Julian Eaglesong has been the bedrock of the team through thick and thin, and has truly earned the love and admiration of all Blizzard fans and players alike. In his 11th season with the Blizzard, Eaglesong is showing he can still keep up with the kids these days. Stepping up when the rookies are faultering and showing them how to work through adversity, a mini-renaissance for Eaglesong with 6 Goals, 8 Assists, 41 Shots on Goal, and 19 Hits. <3
⭐⭐⭐
Third Blizzstar
MattyJ
#37 - RW - Tampa, USA
16GP - 5G, 7A, 12P, -21
MattyJ, we wish you the best in Chicago, hopefully our paths will cross again (THIS IS NOT A TAMPER). Although the index will never show you as ever played for us, we will remember the 39 games together fondly. Once a Blizzard, Always a Blizzard <3
Honourable Mention
Benjamin Surkhi-Ze'ev #10 - C - Tel Aviv, Israel 16GP - 6G, 7A, 13P, -13 The prodigal son returns! After a 3 season hiatus with New Orleans, Surkhi-Ze'ev comes home to the Blizzard. In his 12th SHL season (9th with EDM), Benjamin put up similar numbers to resident senior Eaglesong. The oldies definitely stepped up with the team was struggling and needed them most.
Congratulations to the Week 1 + 2 Blizzstars! All winners get a shiny HFFO bobblehead (clothing not included) and a "Get out of whipping free" card (Cannot be transferred or traded. No cash value, can only be redeemed in S73. At participating locations only.)
