The Kelowna Knights, a new beginning
#1

After a heartbreaking loss in the finals last year, some might think the expectation of the Knights would be high, trying for round 2 of the finals. But in reality, it doesn't always work like that. With a lot of roster turnover, the Knights had a choice of trying to build a team to return to the finals, or focus on development of rookie talent. Deciding to go the rookie route, the Knights put a lot of effort into scouting, looking to have a strong draft, even with their late round pick.

So how has the season gone for a team made of rookies and players headed into their second year? Well if you look at their record, you might think not all that well, but the record doesn't tell the full story.

Key Rookie performances:

lets start by taking a look at first round drafty Mel Guolla.  A center taken in this years draft, Kelowna put a lot of faith into their new rookie. Mel has put up a respectable season so far with 30 points in 53 games played. Mel is focused on being a two way player so lets take a deeper look at the season stats so far and see what looks good.

One very encouraging stat is Mel was leaned on heavily in the faceoff dot, managing a strong 53.9% faceoff percentage, especially for a rookie season.

Mel also managed 2 Short handed goals on the season, leading his team in that stat. Very respectable for a rookie season and something to build off!

An area of improvement for sure would be on the power play as he only managed 3 power play goals, one less than his short handed numbers! He'll look to improve this on his next season

The second player we're gonna look at is Lee King! a right handed defenseman in taken in the 2nd round of this years draft. He's put up a very respectable 24 points in 53 games as a defenseman!

Lee king has a little extra bite to his game, getting in 2 fights this season to bring a little energy to his teams game!

Lee also used his big frame to lead the team in blocked shots, blocking 133 shots in 53 games!

The Final rookie we're gonna look at is Dirk Dienhart. Dirk is a LW, taken in the 3rd round of this draft. Dirk had a great rookie season, putting up 40 points in 53 games!

Taking a deeper look at Dirk's stats, he wasn't afraid of throwing the body around, leading his team in hits with 133 hits

One thing to note about Dirk's season is his shooting percentage was quite low, sitting at 6.7%. I could see this going up in the next season, allowing him to score more in his next season!

Dirk was also tied with the team lead in powerplay assists, proving Dirk has a strong playmaking side to his game!

So, after taking a look at the knights leading rookies.. when looking at the team's record, it would be easy to say that the season wasn't a success, but after taking a look at the talent that was drafted and the strong season's they had, you can find some success in Kelowna's season and direction
